Walking through the train station this morning, I overheard a woman say, “It’s time to start thinking about Christmas.” I wanted to grab her by the shoulder and shake her, screaming that it’s only the beginning of October. Christmas is almost three months away and it’s definitely not time to start thinking about it!

It is, however, high time we all start considering Halloween. The line between a good Lady Gaga costume and a bad Lady Gaga costume is thin — sometimes the outfit can be more hilarious and over-the-top for its utter shoddiness. But only sometimes. Do you have a dog? Have you gotten its Halloween costume yet? No? Well, what are you waiting for? There’s only a month left! I’m of the opinion that the best thing to dress an animal up as is another animal. Animal Planet offers these terrific doggy costumes — dinos, zebras and turtles, oh my.

Halloween’s coming up next month and we thought we’d get a jump on things by giving you advice on what to absolutely, definitely not wear. You should not, under any circumstances, wear these taped-together Homer Simpson and Mr. Burns costumes.

Why shouldn’t you wear them? Because they’re horrifying, for one. But also – how can you get donuts into your mouth with a big rubbery mask all over it. Common sense, you guys.

The Daily WTF: Giant Pink Dog Has Thoughts About Richard Gere

This is a WTF in the truest sense of the term: A guy dressed up in a giant pink dog costume (with sunglasses, natch) expressing his tepid feelings about Richard Gere via an enormous flashcard. Are we supposed to honk if we agree? Too enthusiastic? How about shrug half-heartedly if we agree.

Hey, at least the guy didn’t dress up like a giant gerbil.

We love cats and we love dinosaurs. We wanted to give you a gallery of dinosaurs dressed as cats, but the security guards at the Museum of Natural History did not find our plan very amusing. So here’s the next best thing: cats dressed as dinos. Feline Stego and T-Rex with whiskers — aww!

Make Your Own: Slutty Baghead Costume

You may remember last week’s post titled “American Apparel Wants to Destroy Halloween” about the shop’s gallery of incredibly lazy costumes. Not convinced that the extreme half-assedness of their dress-up options was sufficiently addressed, the fine folks over at Am Ap took it upon themselves to send an “emergency costume” in a bag over to our offices. Looking over the t-shirt, dress and sparkly leggings combo, we would have gone with “abstract costume” instead, but who are we to question the logic of Dov Charney. Inspired more by the bag than anything else, we created what is sure to be a staple of Halloween costumes for years to come: Slutty Baghead. Follow our (admittedly also half-assed) instructions and make one of your own.

Step 1: Place your bag on the counter. Check for sounds of ticking, hissing or other such tomfoolery.

Step 2: Open up your bag! A sturdy pair of scissors and a shocked expression may be necessary for this part.

Step 3: Examine the contents of your costume package. Brainstorm with your co-workers and recognize that mint green is just not your color.

Step 4: Become Slutty Baghead. First, worm your way into your suffocatingly tight XXXS American Apparel dress. Then cut eye holes in your bag — carefully, of course. After that, growl a couple times for good measure. Spooooky?

Step 5: Hop on over to your computer and type up a list of instructions so that others can experience the joy of Slutty Baghead. After that, um, go out and scare some kids or something. Boo!
