Poll: Did Dakota Fanning’s Perfume Ad Deserve To Be Banned In The UK?

An ad for Marc Jacobs‘ Oh, Lola! perfume featuring teen actress Dakota Fanning has just been banned in the UKby the Advertising Standards Authority because it appears to sexualize a child. “We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality,” the ASA said in its ruling. “Because of that, along with her [young] appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offence.”

For their part, the child admirers at perfume maker Coty UK said they had not received any complaints about the ad, that Fanning was not styled to appear underage (the fact that she is actually under 18 aside), and that the ad was “provoking but not indecent.”

Personally, I’m not sure why you would even want to be “provoking” when it comes to sexualizing a kid. From the little pink dress, the flower sticking out of her crotch, and the name of the perfume, it’s clear that the ad was intended to reference Lolita, which, need I remind you, is a book about the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl by a creepy old man who marries her mother in order to get closer to her. (And yes, Fanning looks like she could be 13.) Jacobs even admitted as much to WWD when he said “I knew [Dakota] could be this contemporary Lolita, seductive yet sweet.” Did he and I read the same Lolita? Because the version I read was pretty disturbing. It certainly didn’t make me want to smell like Lolita so that I could attract a rapey old man of my own.

Then, there’s the role Dakota Fanning herself is playing in all of this. It seems like she’s self-consciously pushing the envelope of how sexy she can get how fast, like a high fashion version of Taylor Momsen, and the fashion world is helping her to do so. The fact that a 17-year-old actress can act out some sort of nymphette fetish and a whole bunch of grown-ups will be into it (provided she’s wearing the right clothes), is a testament to just how fucked up the fashion industry is.

Then again, maybe I’m making much ado about nothing. What do you think?

Dakota, we know you’re hardcore after you did The Runaways, but you really didn’t need this encounter to up your cred. And there was no reason to drag your younger sister into this—a photo session with “Uncle Terry,” a man who’s repeatedly been accused of sexually harassing his models.

I want to know which agent decided that these girls, who regularly walk the red carpet in designer duds and have high-profile film projects lined up, needed to do this for attention. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I see Elle as one of the few Hollywood kids untainted by all that bullshit; photo shoots like this make me envision her as going down the same route as Ali Lohan, and that’s just not good.

Oh God, Elle is wearing his glasses. Nonono.

Even though she would probably never be caught dead watching Lifetime, Lady Gaga is nevertheless the latest star that the women’s network has decided to highlight in an undoubtedly dramatic biopic. As you might’ve guessed, the singer/superstar has nothing to do with the process; the story will be adapted from the unauthorized biography Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga.

So, here’s the vital question: Who will they cast to play Stefani Germanotta/Gaga? We’ve made some educated guesses—mostly actresses, but with a few celebrities thrown into the mix for reasons you’ll quickly understand. Of course, because it’s Lifetime you’re unlikely to see any of these stars sinking that low. But then you’ll be seeing some unknown anyway, so for the time being enjoy our fantasy-world predictions!

How do you know Abigail Breslin‘s grown up? She joins an indie teen sex comedy called A Virgin Mary. Now, she’s never been squeaky-clean — consider her “Superfreak” dance in Little Miss Sunshine – but the plot still comes as a shock: Abigail’s character promises her best guy friend that if neither of them has lost their virginity by 18, they’ll sleep with each other.

Joining Abigail in A Virgin Mary are Carter Jenkins as the lucky guy (Valentine’s Day), Keke Palmer (last seen on Degrassi) as her best friend, and Daryl Sabara (from the Spy Kids movies).

Turns out this is something of a pattern: Many other young Hollywood actresses made the transition to more adult movies with a single role, shocking either because of their age or their previous “good-girl” look.

Good Going, NYU: Students Can Now Access Celebrity Students/Professors’ E-Mail Addresses

I’m really bummed that the semester after I graduated, NYU will have both James Franco and Nicolas Cage teaching film classes. Plus, Dakota Fanning will be a Gallatin (my alma mater) freshman! But even though I won’t have the chance to bump into these celebrities on campus, I can still e-mail them.

That’s right: NYU Mail’s much-necessary switch over to Gmail has left a few holes in the university’s e-mail system. When composing an e-mail, all I have to do is type in the name of a celebrity who has attended or taught at the university, and his/her NYU e-mail address comes up.

Student publication NYU Local noticed this first as part of a larger article about student privacy, and again this month when they confirmed that Dakota was part of Gallatin’s class of 2015. (The accompanying photo comes from that post.)

There are two factors here: a) Gmail’s fondness for auto-fill, and b) what I can only assume is the university’s desire that all students be able to find each other without trouble. The thing is, any privacy settings have to be input by the student/professor; you can easily hide your information, but you have to do it.

This isn’t the end of the world, since celebrities will probably soon figure out that they can opt out of the list, and we’ll lose our limited means of contact forever. Also, it’s not as if their NYU addresses are a direct line to the stars. There’s a good chance that they, like the rest of us, hardly ever check our school e-mail.

Snap This: Dakota Fanning Graduates High School

While you hear stories of celebrities who gave up college or even high school in order to pursue acting and became multimillionaries without ever having to hit the books again, it’s nice to see someone who’s able to juggle both. Dakota Fanning graduated from North Hollywood private school Campbell Hall yesterday.

Despite having an incredibly busy acting career — her last few movies were Coraline, The Runawys, and appearances in Twilight: New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, Part 1 — Fanning managed to stay on the varsity cheerleading squad, and she was voted homecoming queen two years in a row.

Not to sound like a teary parent, but wasn’t it literally just yesterday that she was that creepy alien-human kid in the Taken miniseries, or Sean Penn‘s adorable kid?

Unlike other actors her age who opted to abandon schooling or had a private tutor, Fanning has really made sure that she gets the quintessential high-school experience. After all, she’s only 17, so she could have a few more years of high-school dramas ahead of her (or college-aged ones), so it pays to know what the screenwriters were going for.

Then again, there are rumors that Fanning got accepted to my alma mater, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, and could be attending there in the fall as part of the class of 2015.
