Brooklyn promoter Todd P, who is responsible for the shows that happen at Market Hotel, Monster Island Basement, and many others, is hoping to start a new tradition: A post-SXSW music festival in Monterrey, Mexico called MtyMx. After years of having a free show at Ms. Bea’s in Austin the day after SXSW ends, this year he’s bringing out all the stops. Aside from a cheap ($30 for 3 days!) music festival with 75 bands in a beautiful setting (an… More »

Many hipsters are still mourning the “passing” of the free Jelly NYC Pool Parties at McCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg. The free concerts in the empty pool were some of the best parties in the previous summers, with artists like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Breeders, and Spank Rock playing free shows there. Unfortunately, the city decided to turn the pool back into an actual pool (ie fill it with water)… More »

The second night of the Baltimore Round Robin at (le) Poisson Rouge took place on Saturday night and this time the theme was Feet Night. This meant that all the music was more rhythmic and generally dance-inducing. Somehow, this translated into moshing and crowd surfing. People were much more obnoxious at this show, trying to move to each stage that had a band playing on it for every song, which makes for a lot of pushing and shoving. People should… More »
On Friday night Dan Deacon curated a night of Baltimore musicians playing in a round robin at (le) Poisson Rouge. What does that mean? It means there were a bunch of stages set up around the perimeter of the room and the audience was in the middle. Each of the 13 bands would play one song in one location and then the next band would immediately follow with another song.
There were three rounds, meaning each band played three songs. It… More »

This may be the coolest, most innovative music event to come around in a while…Dan Deacon and friends from Baltimore are touring the country to play two nights in various city of a “Round Robin” concert. This means that all the musicians, including the likes of Beach House, Jana Hunter, Adventure, and of course Dan Deacon, will sit in a circle around the perimeter of the venue with the audience in the middle and will literally go song by song… More »

So many venues host (mostly) free shows in the summertime, it’s hard to keep up. There’s McCarren Pool, Central Park, and Prospect Park. But then there’s also Castle Clinton in Battery Park, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, and the South Street Seaport. Here’s an update to what I’ve already posted (McCarren so far, Prospect Park so far, Central Park so far):
Winter Garden:
Saturday, May 31, 6:00pm – Sunday, June 1, 6:00am (12-hour… More »
