Questionable Choices: Mark Ballas Wears Guyliner

When I was in the tenth grade, my boyfriend Joe was in a band. They called their genre “horror punk” and all their songs were about The Lost Boys. Joe used to wear black Converse sneakers, tight black jeans, a black hoodie and eyeliner. I thought he looked awesome. That was 11 years ago. Now that I’m an adult, seeing Mark Ballas wear the same look doesn’t elicit quite the same feelings of hormonal lust.

The Dancing with the Stars cast member stepped out Tuesday night and hit the West Hollywood restaurant Madeo. Mark recently broke up with American Idol star Pia Toscano and is currently rumored to be dating singer Tiffany Dunn. I hope she likes The Lost Boys.

The Cougar Town Cast Is Making A Bunch Of Fun Cameos On TV Shows This Fall

Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence is a big fan of cross-promotion: Last season, the Community character Abed (Danny Pudi) popped up in the background of a Cougar episode; and when Scrubs was still on the air, Bill let star Sarah Chalke play a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother.

Now, the entire Cougar Town cast is doing a mass exodus of cross-promotion all over TV this fall. Since the show won’t return for its third season until January, they figured they had time to kill. Plus, it’s a great form of guerilla marketing that fans will actually enjoy watching.

So far 13 shows are onboard to feature the stars what sound like they’ll be non-speaking roles—a treat for loyal viewers who can spot Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, or Brian Van Holt. Here are the ones we know, by network:

ABC: Body of Proof, Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Man Up!, The Middle
CBS: How I Met Your Mother
Nick, Jr.: Yo Gabba Gabba

The two big guest roles so far both happen tonight, on Shonda Rhimes‘ two medical dramas. Ian Gomez will convince us he’s a doctor on Grey’s Anatomy; then Courteney Cox and Christa Miller play a lesbian couple at a fertility clinic on Private Practice.

Courteney and daughter Coco were spotted earlier this week on Dancing with the Stars to cheer on her estranged husband David Arquette, but we assume that that appearance was unofficial. Whichever actor appears on that show will probably do so in-character.

Cher Gets Her Own Celebrity Comic From Bluewater Productions

Cher is the latest celebrity to get the dubious honor of a comic book about her rise to stardom, courtesy of Bluewater Productions. That’s right, the same people who brought you unauthorized biographies on the Glee kids and Justin Bieber!

Darren G. Davis, the publisher at Bluewater, explains why Cher was the perfect choice for the company’s “Female Force” series:

“We have been creating the biographies of the famous in a sequential art form for almost two years and it was only a matter of time before we got to this icon. Her life has been marked failures and successes, but she still stands boldly for herself and for her friends and we had to tell her story.”

Seriously—Twilight author Stephenie Meyer got a Bluewater comic, and Selena Gomez was listed specifically as a “Female Force,” before Cher!

The cover features an interesting oxymoron: Cher wearing her outfit from the 2010 VMAs, but with a much younger face. Although we’re often leery of Bluewater’s sincerity, Marc Shapiro (who wrote the 32-page comic) seems genuinely excited about the project:

“The clothes, the times, the attitudes of the decades she’s lived through. The different styles of music she’s been involved in. So much of what Cher has experienced is so flamboyant, over the top and just plain out there. She has been very much the real life equivalent of a superhero, and writing about Cher, to a large degree, has been just about letting my imagination go.”

Aww. Plus, it’s good to see Cher getting attention on her own, nothing to do with any of the Dancing with the Stars controversy surrounding her transgender son Chaz Bono.

After impressing everyone with the size of her boobs on the DWTS premiere, Nancy Grace has gone a step further and impressed everyone with the size of her areolas…unintentionally, we assume.

Following a rousing quickstep number, the camera panned over the audience while host Tom Bergeron said, “here we go, just to help you out there a little bit. Holy cow. That’s all right. On the European version that would be perfectly fine.” (I love the nervous way his voice cracked on “fine.”) What was he helping her out with? Sharp-eyed viewers saw a split second of a partially exposed areola before the camera person cut swiftly away, thoughts of FCC fines no doubt dancing in his or her head.

Luckily for everyone who wants to perv on Nancy Grace (which is…a lot of you, apparently?), Gawker‘s Matt Cherette took a screencap at just the right moment, producing the NSFW-ish picture you see above. Nip slip aside, she managed to do quite well in the competition…a full video of her segment, below.

In America, there are people who are famous for doing nothing. They are called reality stars. You can protest all you want, but as things currently stand, they are indisputably famous and there’s nothing you can do about it.

However, there’s a class of people that makes those people look like Meryl Streep, and those are the people who are famous-ish due to their proximity to these famous-for-nothing folks. These people have two options, really: they can go along for the ride, acknowledging their absurdly good fortune all the while, or they can pretend they’re actually famous in hopes of fooling people into thinking they are. Rob Kardashian, of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Dancing With The Stars, is one of said people, and according to a tipster I spoke with last night, he has chosen the second, more risky path.

Our tipster is a waitress at a high end restaurant. When assigning her to the table, her boss said, “oh, she lives in Williamsburg, she’ll know who you are,” or some such thing. When she went to take the two men’s order, they looked at her expectantly like she was going to scream with delight. “Don’t you recognize us?” asked the douchier of the two guys. “Do you…live in Williamsburg?” she asked, at which they scoffed. “Don’t you watch TV?” they asked. “Only when I’m at my parents’ house,” she replied. “Are you on that MTV show about Williamsburg?” They scoffed again. They wouldn’t give up until she guessed who they were, and Williamsburg was the only clue she had to go on. Uncomfortable.

Throughout the course of the meal, they were extremely rude and demanding, although the d-bag’s companion (whom she identified as a gay guy) was significantly nicer. They wanted substitutions, they didn’t didn’t want shallots, and everything was wrong. And still, he wouldn’t give up until she figured out who he was, engaging her in an unpleasant game of Twenty Questions. “Don’t you watch MTV?” he asked again. “Um, sometimes? At my parents’ house?” “Um, ever heard of a show called The Kardashians?” “Vaguely. But I’ve never seen it.” He looked defeated. His companion paid the check and the two left without ever identifying themselves.

We went over clips from Keeping Up With The Kardashians until she could identify him. (This felt like a police line-up.) As it turned out, the “gay guy” was Jonathan Cheban (who the Internet tells me is actually straight?), and the other guy, the one who refused to believe that anyone who has ever watched a television show could possibly fail to identify him, was Rob Kardashian. I guess his plan to get more famous is to badger every poor waitress in the country into figuring out who he is. Less efficient than a sex tape, but at least it doesn’t involve taking his pants off.

Jennifer Aniston and Chaz Bono Are Both Unreconizable in This High School Photo

Us magazine unearthed this photo of former classmates Chaz (then Chastity) Bono and Jennifer Aniston when they both attended New York City’s High School of Performing Arts back in 1987… but honestly, you wouldn’t know it from looking at them.

Of course there’s the obvious point that Chaz got gender reassignment surgery in 2009 and now lives as a man. But even during his time living as a woman, we were used to Chastity with more weight and short hair.

And while you can pick out Jennifer’s famous features, she’s sporting what many believe to be her old nose. (On Inside the Actors Studio in July, she basically admitted that she’d gotten a nose job for cosmetic reasons, instead of the usual excuse of deviated septum.)

The photo comes from Jennifer’s interview with Allure in January; about her former schoolmate, she said, ”Every day a group of us would go to Chaz’s house after school. I haven’t spoken to him in a while.”

Chaz Bono Responds To Dancing With The Stars Controversy

Ever since the producers of Dancing With The Stars announced they’d chosen Chaz Bono to compete on their thirteenth season, the Internet has been ablaze with ridiculously hateful comments about him and fellow cast member Carson Kressley, a gay man. “Both are LGBT rights advocates and promote this destructive lifestyle,” reads a petition circulated by conservative wing nut group OneMillionMoms. “DWTS is helping them create visibility for the LGBT community. This is completely unacceptable and Christians should not watch the show, no excuses! Kressley will be paired up with a female dancer, and since Chasity, transformed to Chaz after her sex change in 2009, will also be paired with a female dancer blah blah hatred bigotry blah.”

Although his famous mom Cher has been quick to respond to these attacks, Chaz has remained relatively silent on the issue until today, when he spoke with Good Morning America about it. When asked how he felt about the attacks, he had this to say:

To be honest, I really haven’t been paying that much attention to it…I’m really kinda just focused on dancing and enjoying everything that’s happening…I think it’s a much bigger deal to everybody else than it is to me.

But what did he mean when he said “America needs to see this”? What does American need to see?

That I’m just a regular guy. That all these ideas of children shouldn’t watch me, that it’s gonna be confusing…all that stuff is just crazy. For all of the teens and kids out there with gender dysphoria, I think it’s gonna have a really positive impact. I know that when I was growing up, if I had seen somebody like me on a show like this, it would’ve made all the difference in my life.

I love how all these “won’t somebody please think of the children” people conveniently forget that some children happen to be LGBT themselves, and that said children’s lives are often unnecessarily difficult because of the hatred groups like OneMillionMoms propagate.

When asked how he’d respond to people who say he’s pushing a political agenda (on the children, no less), he responded sensibly that he’s not going to be talking about anything other than dancing, and that “people who don’t have gender dysphoria aren’t going to catch it by watching me dance on television.”

This is all quite true. But sadly, to many people in this country, “I’m just a regular guy,” or even, “I am a human being who deserves to be treated as such” is a political statement coming from a transgender person. So long as that remains a topic of debate, the show is taking a position by treating Chaz like any old semi-famous person who wants to dance their way into America’s hearts. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay. For the sake of LGBT kids everywhere, I applaud the producers’ decision.

Parting Tweet: Chaz Bono and Dancing with the Stars Are Under Attack

Fans of Dancing with the Stars have taken to the message boards to criticize ABC’s casting of transgender contestant Chaz Bono (a move that GLAAD commended). Fans have gone so far as to threaten to skip the show this season on account of Chaz, who will be dancing with Lacey Schwimmer. One comment in particular struck me as especially ridiculous:

“My mom is in her 50′s (like a lot of viewers) and grew up with Chastity on her parents’ show. My mom will only see her as a girl and while she loves Cher, does not want this to happen.”

I can’t wait for ABC’s press release responding to this: “We’d like to apologize to the mother of an IMDB commenter who is upset over the existence of Chaz Bono to a degree that it interferes with her ability to live her life.”

By all accounts, Chaz seems excited about doing the show, and it’s great to see Cher so supportive of her son, even if her language is a little tricky to understand.

The Pregnant Man Thinks Chaz Bono Robbed Him Of His Spot On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Never underestimate a not-very-famous person’s drive to piggyback on some perceived association with a sort-of-famous person. Thomas Beatie, the trans guy who first made headlines in 2008 for being both legally male and pregnant, is now saying he thinks Chaz Bono beat him out for a spot on Dancing With The Stars.

He reached out to casting in the hopes of landing a spot a few months ago — but never got a call back. But after DWTS announced that Chaz would be on the show, Thomas says he thinks he knows why he was rejected — the transgender quota had already been filled.

Thomas says he understands why producers wouldn’t cast two famous transgender people on the show — but he’s still pretty bummed out … telling us, “I wanted to try my new body out. I’m an athlete and I know I would have excelled.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Dancing With The Stars try to fulfill its promise of “stars” at least somewhat? Chaz Bono might be kind of a B-list celebrity, but he still ranks above Thomas Beatie, no? And the so-called “Pregnant Man” is not even pregnant anymore, so he really should stop calling himself that. I know “The Man Who Was Once Pregnant But Is Now Just A Dad” doesn’t sound as good, but it might be a bit more accurate.

Look at it this way, Mr. Six Pack: you are already, as you say, an athlete. Maybe Chaz Bono needs this more than you. He has, in the past, expressed a desire to get in better shape, so maybe this is the kick in the ass he’s been looking for. With training this intense, I’m sure Chaz will look and feel significantly different by the time the show is done taping. Share the six pack wealth, my friend.
