Whatever other criticisms people might reasonably make of Britney Spears, she was, at least for a while, a very good dancer, and it seems she’s passed that gene down to her son Sean Preston. More »
Lest you think that Tom Cruise‘s famous dances in Risky Business and Tropic Thunder are all thanks to editing, at a wedding over the weekend the actor showed that he can still get down. More »
Ever wondered how we got from Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire to Napoleon Dynamite‘s dance routine? YouTube user mewlists, who brought you the “25 best unscripted scenes” video that we posted a few days ago, has compiled 100 iconic dance sequences that span 90 years of film. In-between the ones mentioned above are such new classics as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s steamy tango from Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Billy Elliot giving in to the music, and Steve Carell and co. gallivanting to “The Age of Aquarius” at the end of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Swing dancing’s pretty cool in a time-long-past way, right? And we all grew up with Super Mario Bros. on our Gameboys or Wiis. Bet you never thought they could be combined! Dancers Morgan Day and Emily Wigger debuted this amazing mash-up at the Camp Hollywood 2011 National Jitterbug Championship; there have been a couple grainy versions going around the Internet, but here’s a high-quality version from Swing! The Documentary. More »
Despite getting his start as superb dancer Link Larkin in Broadway’s Hairspray, Matthew Morrison must have a contractual obligation that forces him to give all of the dance scenes on Glee to the kids. We know this because he breaks into dance at every other chance he gets: On Oprah, on Jay Leno, and now at the NKOTBSB tour. He’s opening for the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys supergroup, but his moves just don’t seem to be up to snuff. More »
Some smartie mashed up our beloved Nyan Cat loop with a Bollywood movie — and wouldn’t you know it, but the moves match up amazingly well to the nonstop, uber-cheerful tune. To quote YouTube commenter Thyire: “From this day forward, this is the only way I shall now dance to Nyan Cat.” More »
Little did Kate Middleton know when she said “I do” that she would be marrying into a family of such phenomenal dancers. And by “phenomenal,” I mean so wonderfully awkward. I think it’s Prince Charles’ ears that do it (it usually is). I wonder if Wills and Harry are aware of this little piece of their father’s past? I mean, everyone’s allowed to have a few skeletons stashed in some well-hidden closets, but this is one truly spectacular surprise. More »
This season on Dancing with the Stars, every single week has been a theme week. I’m okay with occasional theme weeks on the show if they push people outside of their comfort zones – classical week was great because people couldn’t rely on the lyrics to help them keep their timing, and it ended up upping everyone’s game – but when you have one every single week it just starts to look gimmicky. But Dancing with the Stars is nothing if not gimmicky, so here we go. More »
Every year on April 25, penguins in the Antarctic begin their annual northward migration. That means that today is World Penguin Day! To celebrate, here’s one of our favorite penguin videos.

Historically, models have not fared well as Dancing with the Stars contestants – they often lack the name recognition of actors or athletes. Though Paulina Porizkova and Josie Maran were not long for Dancing, it seemed like Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova had a chance of breaking the “model curse.” Because of her well-known story about surviving the Indian Ocean tsunami several years ago, she was able to connect with the audience and translate her story into a beautiful dance. Unfortunately, her good scores weren’t enough to keep her on the show, as she was eliminated last night. More »
Last night was classical night on Dancing with the Stars, which meant the song-slaughtering singers got the night off. It also meant that the celebrities had to up their game because they didn’t have recognizable pop songs to dance to. WWE wrestler Chris Jericho showed why he’s more than a joke contestant with his fierce paso doble, and we also got a reminder that his partner Cheryl Burke is the best teacher on this show. More »
If you were someone who grew up mesmerized by Britney Spears‘ dance moves in the early years of her career, then you were (like me) devastated by her disastrous, lethargic performance at the 2007 VMAs. In the last three years Spears has certainly upped the ante, trained to regain some of her fitness, and released several more dance singles. But it wasn’t until I saw this video from Pop Dust that I realized how marked a difference there is between Britney circa 1999-2003 and Britney circa 2009-onward. More »
My favorite tabloid, The National Enquirer, announces on this week’s cover that Dancing with the Stars is rigged and that either Kirstie Alley or Kendra Wilkinson will win. Here are the Enquirer’s arguments, plus commentary from me. More »
Although I had picked her as a potential frontrunner last week, this week Kirstie Alley didn’t have great luck on Dancing with the Stars. During her rumba with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy (which was supposed to be sexy, but…), Kirstie made a misstep and fell. To their credit, Kirstie and Maks recovered nicely and kept going, and this should set them up for a nice redemption arc next week. More »
Last week’s surprise top scorer on Dancing with the Stars was Ralph Macchio. Like last season’s winner Jennifer Grey, he came in with a lot of nostalgia (hello, The Karate Kid), and like Grey he managed to back his name recognition up with talent. Last night, he and partner Karina Smirnoff did a jive that won the approval of the judges – and Macchio’s two teenage kids. More »
This adorable 10 year old has got it going on when it comes to robot dancing! More »
My early prediction for this season of Dancing with the Stars: Kirstie Alley is a contender. More »
Can people have spirit videos? If so, then this one is definitely mine! You know how at family weddings, your crazy uncle Stan will get up and start doing like the crazy chicken or something, and everyone will think it’s just the funniest thing ever? Yeah, sorry Uncle Stan, but these guys blow you out of the water. More »
Students win Ugly Dance World Cup - Yep, that’s a thing. In Europe, of course. A team of German high school kids took home the top prize after wowing judges with their signature move called the “Shy Dance.” Nobody tell my dad about this contest, okay? (Reuters)
