It’s cute how choked up “Archie” (as his fans call him) was when he made the announcement. He was sure to stress that he didn’t feel any pressure to make this decision:

It’s not because someone told me I was supposed to do it and not because I no longer want to do music anymore. It’s because it’s what I feel I need to do next in my life. It’s the same feeling that I’ve always tried to follow in my life—the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges and the blessings, too. And I’ve learned to trust that feeling and answer when it calls. That’s the reason why I know I have to do this in my life.

David has one stop left on his tour this Wednesday; then are the holidays and, we expect, preparations for his mission. It’s a strict undertaking: Aside from the standard uniform of dress shirt, tie, nametag, and book, missionaries must be up at 6:30 a.m., remain chaste, and abstain from all entertainment. So David won’t be able to see who the next two seasons of American Idol contestants are. However, missionaries are allowed to write letters or use e-mail to communicate with family and friends; they get two phone calls home a year, on Christmas and Mother’s Day.

Of course, anything related to Mormonism I’ve been associating with music, since I finally saw Book of Mormon last week. So if David’s mission is anything like Matt Stone and Trey Parker‘s musical vision, then he’ll fit right in:

Although 24-year-old Kina says winning the Doritos contest in 2008 made her “100% focused on music and getting it out in the world,” it also won her a contract with Interscope, which she ended up walking away from, choosing to pursue her own vision instead. “Once I got down to it, I started to realize that maybe it wasn’t the right place for me,” Kina told Crushable. “I already had my songs written and I was so ready to go.” After getting out of the contract with Interscope, Kina paired up with producer Rich Jacques to create what would eventually become Stairwells — a year and a half later. “He just really understood my sound and let me be really involved in the process, which was great,” Kina said.

Even without the backing of a label, Stairwells debuted on the Billboard 200 when it came out in February, and her single “Valentine” has racked up more than 2 million views. And Kina’s currently touring to promote the album, stopping in New York to play a sold out show at the Highline Ballroom tonight, and ending at the Lilith Fair in St. Louis. It’s her first time on a real tour, but she’d like to do more eventually, maybe pairing with other singer-songwriters like Jason Mraz. “It’s definitely a lifestyle that I’ve had to adapt to,” Kina said of touring. “It’s nonstop and a new hotel room every night, a new city, a lot of driving. But it’s so worth it, getting to see these different parts of the country and meeting all these amazing people who have been supporting me. It’s just been super fun.”

As for working with Daniel and David, Kina — whose name is a “made-up name” comprised of the first Japanese characters from her mother and grandmother’s names — says she just sort of fell into it. “Daniel Beddingfield and I kind of became friends this past year. I’m really a fan of his music and he’s a fan of mine,” she told Crushable, describing her music as a happy medium between pop, folk and indie. “We started writing together and…we ended up doing a few songwriting sessions with David Archuleta.”

Ultimately, we might end up seeing a song written by all three on David’s upcoming album. “David is the sweetest, sweetest guy ever. He’s so fun to work with and easy and polite. It was just lovely. And then of course he’s ridiculously talented,” she said of the American Idol runner-up.

But even working with two music superstars can’t help Kina conquer her most basic fear — the self-confessed shy girl admits to still getting nervous before going on stage. “I try to find a little place that’s quiet and focus on how amazing it is that I’m doing this and that these people are here to support me and how lucky it is,” Kina said of her pre-show ritual. “There’s still this little part of me that remembers how shy I really am so it will try to freak me out. I’ve luckily been able to quite that voice, but it’s still there.”

American Idol

1. “Hallelujah”

Jason Castro did it. Lee DeWyze did it. Either way, “Hallelujah” is too much for the average Idol contestant to sing. For one thing, the lyrics contain references to adultery and other stuff that always ends up being cut. For another, the song is oversaturated throughout pop culture, not just on Idol. It’s been everywhere from The West Wing to Shrek, and it’s losing its power and meaning in the process. Put this one back in the drawer, guys.

2. “Fallin’”

“Fallin’” was the single that introduced Alicia Keys to the world, and wannabe ingenues have been using it as their “Idol” audition song ever since. Unfortunately, though, most of the singers who attempt this song can’t match Alicia’s vocals and end up packing it with so many runs and so much melisma that you can’t find the notes. It’s too showy, and most singers can’t keep up.

3. “Alone”

Whenever a female singer on “Idol” is trying to break out of whatever box she’s been put into, she reaches for “Alone” as the song to break her out of it. When you are Carrie Underwood, trying to prove that you can sing rock as well as country, it works. When you are absolutely anyone else, it does not. Lesson learned.

4. “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”

This song might break an “Idol” record for the amount of times it’s been used on the show. However, the contestants aren’t totally to blame here. It’s a huge favorite for judges’ picks: David Archuleta, Justin Guarini, and Clay Aiken have all been tasked with singing it in the finals. Besides this song, what do these three singers have in common? They all lost. Accept that the song is cursed and let it go.

5. Anything by Whitney Houston

If you sing something by Whitney Houston, Randy will tell some dumb story about how he was there when Whitney recorded it and how he is friends with famous people and you are not, and he will use that story to illustrate that Whitney sang the song better than anyone will ever sing ever again, and that will include you.
