Hey, kids. I have some sad news for you: This is my last weekend as Crushable’s faithful Weekend Editor. It’s been a good run, but alas, it’s time to say goodbye. You’ll still be able to catch me over at BettyConfidential, though, so it’s not goodbye forever; it’s just a change of scene. That said, though, I’ll miss you all, and I’ll miss our weekend extravaganzas. So let’s make sure Crushable’s former weekends go out with a bang, shall we? This– obviously– calls for a drinking game! I’m sure most of you know the David Bowie song “Space Oddity.” It’s possible that you call this song “Ground Control to Major Tom,” which makes a certain amount of sense, given the number of times that phrase is repeated throughout it. But you know what I bet you didn’t know? I bet you didn’t know that artist Andrew Kolb– remember him?– made “Space Oddity” into a children’s book. It’s quite possibly the most depressing children’s book in existence, but it does make a good one: Simple story, pretty pictures, and so on. Here’s the thing, though: When I read Space Oddity, written by David Bowie & illustrated by Andrew Kolb, I kind of freaked out a little. Because Kolb’s interpretation of the song, which is shown beautifully through his illustrations, is COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN MY OWN. Not that either of us is necessarily right or wrong– isn’t the point of poetry the fact that it will be interpreted differently by everyone who reads it?– but you guys. It BLEW. My MIND. Want to see what I’m talking about? Come on in. We’ll take a walk through it together. Let’s begin: More »
In my first weeks at Crushable, I combined two of my favorite loves, pop culture and food, in a gallery of treats inspired by celebrities. Today’s gallery is a bit different: It consists of foods actually named for the celebrities who might have patronized the establishment or ordered that specific dish. Because whiny Avril Lavigne cannot be the only star who warrants immortality in the form of delicious themed food and drink. More »
Weird confession: I find David Bowie endlessly fascinating. Somehow, over his long and impressive career, he’s managed to make himself into something more than just a guy who happens to make really good music: He’s actually become a concept. This is a terribly impressive feat; it’s the same reason I’m so interested in Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury. But beyond his essential Bowieness, Bowie has the additional strange ability to pop up in places you’re not expecting him to be. I don’t know how he does it. It’s like magic. And you’d think I would have stopped being surprised by this by now, but I haven’t. It still gets me every time. Interested in going Bowie-hunting? Here’s a hand guide to the unexpected places you might be able to find him: More »
Brad Elterman was a teenager in Los Angeles when he began photographing rockstars at their homes, parties, and other casual settings. Yep, that’s right, at the age when you were masturbating to Conor Oberst music and lamenting your acne scars, Brad was in swimming pools with Joan Jett and Joey Ramone. He’s got a great blog and continually updates with great old pics like some of the snaps in the gallery. More »
Celebrities lead such different lives than most of us mere mortals that sometimes it can be hard to believe they’re real people. Guess what? They may not be! As a matter of fact, they might actually be aliens! While last week’s aliens were all most definitely fictional, I assure you that this weeks’ are one hundred percent real. Tread carefully, though; while some of these real celebrity aliens may want to be your friend, others may be out to take over the world one horrid pop song at a time. This handy guide should help you to separate the friendly aliens from the hostile ones. More »
Earlier this week, our pals over at College Candy posted a list of their top 10 most cliché movie catchphrases. Although these lines are all terrific pieces of writing as well as important moments in cinema history, College Candy is right: By now, they’ve been used so often they’re getting a little tired. So why not lay them down for a nap and break out a couple of these instead? Here are our top 10 movie catchphrases that haven’t yet fallen victim to the horrors of cliché: More »

Purportedly, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards are supposed to celebrate the people who make the glitterati sparkle. But despite the multitude of A-listers at the event last night in New York, the color scheme for this year is either “beige” or “totally insane.” No in-between. (Editor’s Note: Totally insane? How about awesome! The daring designs look fantastic). On one side you have Alexa Chung and Alexis Bledel; on the other, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Biel…. More »
The night I met my now-boyfriend — that’s him, to the left — I was pretty drunk. So drunk, in fact, that the next day I had to ask my friend what he looked like. Was he cute? “Yeah,” she said, “and he was wearing makeup! He looked cool.”
Uh, makeup?
“Yeah, he was wearing eyeliner!”
I was relieved that I hadn’t gone home with a Kiss fan or a Juggalo—just a dude who wears eyeliner. And you know what? I like it!
“Guyliner,”… More »
If you’re constantly on the hunt for emerging bands, then you’ve got to check out Awesome New Republic. The Miami-based electronic rock duo is comprised of John Hancock on vocals and drums and Brian Robertson on keys and vocals. Last fall, ANR put out Hearts, a funky collection of songs that’s all kinds of danceable.
John talked to Crushable about the origins of the awesome name Awesome New Republic, ANR’s musical run-in with everyone’s favorite headband wearing Upper East-Sider, and why… More »
There is a great (and pretty lengthy) interview in FilmStar magazine with Daniel Radcliffe; here’s a couple of excerpts:
On Equus
FS: Have things changed for you since doing Equus?
DR: Yes, I think they have slightly. Hopefully, that it is the beginning of a quite a long proces of being seen in something other than Harry, which is great. Harry is brilliamnt and I enjoy playing him, but obviously I do want to open myself up to something else other than that… More »
