One of the best things to come out of Austin, TX, Spoon has just released a new album called Transference. It is quite good. I’ve only heard it a few times and I already have songs stuck in my head.

Many hipsters are still mourning the “passing” of the free Jelly NYC Pool Parties at McCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg. The free concerts in the empty pool were some of the best parties in the previous summers, with artists like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Breeders, and Spank Rock playing free shows there. Unfortunately, the city decided to turn the pool back into an actual pool (ie fill it with water)… More »

There was a lot going on at (le) Poisson Rouge, including the likes of Laurie Anderson. The evening began with Icelandic artists Olof Arnalds and Skuli Sverrisson perform their albums Vid og Vid and Seria start to finish, with surprise appearnces by Laurie Anderson, Amedeo Pace, Eyvind Kang, Nico Muhly, Anthony Burr, and Peter Scherer. The music was lovely and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” was simply beautiful.

As the day wore on, the music only got better.
I had been meaning to check out the Ruby Suns for a while now and seeing them live was the way to go. Cheerful, bouncy tunes that could make anyone sway to the beat. Side note, the small stage this year was much improved, with more space and better sound. Still not perfect, but a definite improvement over the last few years. McCarren Pool is home to some of the best shows this summer. So far, only ticketed shows have been announced, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the free ones. So far we know M.I.A. and Death Cab for Cutie are playing there, and now we have a few more:
Gogol Bordello on June 10
Devo and Tom Tom Club (whaaa?crazy!) on June 26
And in an interview with Pitchfork, Black Lips mentioned they… More »
