Demi Lovato Neither Confirms Nor Denies The Cocaine Rumors When Talking About Rehab

Yesterday, MuchMusic (via ONTD) aired an interview special with Demi Lovato, ostensibly scheduled to calm down the hubbub of her rumored relapse and her reps’ denial that she had gone back to rehab. However, this special didn’t address the BlindGossip rehab rumors, though it was clearly meant to improve her image. Really, not a lot of new ground was covered at all.

Since Demi pulled out of a Jonas Brothers concert tour in 2010 citing exhaustion and personal issues, the main rumor that’s dogged her is an alleged cocaine addiction. In late 2010, RadarOnline claimed that there was a video of Demi snorting coke — following allegations from a fellow partier that she did it “like a pro” — but to the best of our knowledge, no video ever actually surfaced. Regardless, the mental association has stuck: A former child star posted a Reddit AMA a few months back where she claimed that Disney tried to distract from Demi’s coke problem; even though the poster was anonymous, everyone believed her.

The MuchMusic interviewer goes by the same assumptions that we’ve all had, mentioning “cross addictions” and asking if Demi’s drug and alcohol problems led to rehab. What’s strange is that while Demi reiterates that she sought treatment for emotional problems only, she never actually denies having problems with drugs and alcohol:

“It actually wasn’t a part of the diagnosis of why I was in rehab. I was there for — pull up the list — bipolar disorder, anorexia, binge-and-purge, cutting, depression, and trauma—post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s no secret that I’ve come out and talked about experimenting with drugs and alcohol, but I also self-medicated a lot as a teenager. It’s hard not to, especially when you’re growing up in Hollywood and you’re around everything you want. It sounds silly, not that this is rebellious at all, but I was going to Disneyland whenever I wanted to. Being in a city where your’e never told no, it’s really difficult not to be in a place where you don’t fall into the temptation.”

This sound bite hits a lot of the same points that Demi did a year ago, when she was discharged from rehab and did the media circuit. The keywords that have remained? Self-medicating, purging, “drinking and drugs,” “numbing the pain.” As far as I know, she hasn’t yet named those specific drugs. You would think that as an internet-savvy teenager, she would have seen the cocaine rumors and rushed to deny those if they were untrue.

However, the 19-year-old was pretty candid when talking about how all of her drinking — especially partying hard during the manic episodes of her recently-diagnosed manic-depression — has been underage: “I really didn’t care about the law at that point. I was trying to numb my pain, and that’s all that mattered.”

Something still rubs me the wrong way about them not referencing the BlindGossip fiasco at all. I’d call bullshit on the “recent” timing, but Demi’s red hair seems to match these photos from a Seventeen magazine event in early January 2012. The fact that a popular gossip site called her out directly would have been a fascinating angle to cover; it’s disappointing that no one addressed that.

Former Home Improvement Cutie Taran Noah Smith Arrested For DUI, Drug Possession

Adding to the pile of evidence that being a child star might not be conducive to the healthiest emotional development, Taran Noah Smith, best known for playing Tim Allen‘s youngest son Mark Taylor on ’90s sitcom Home Improvement, was arrested early this morning for driving under the influence and possession of drugs. Ruh-roh.

Via TMZ:

Sources tell us … Smith was behind the wheel of his 1998 silver Honda Accord, which was parked at an angle in front of a fire hydrant when an officer decided to investigate the situation. We’re told the officer smelled a “strong odor” of weed and believed Smith was under the influence…We’re told they also found a stash of hash … a type of marijuana.

Silly Taran Noah Smith! Don’t you know not to park illegally when hot boxing your car? This is clearly a beginner’s mistake he made due to being deprived of a proper adolescence, including the part where you learn how to smoke weed without getting arrested and/or scared. Yet another pitfall of child stardom.

Smith has made headlines in the past for his acrimonious split-up from his parents (who, he believed, were stealing his fortune) and his subsequent acrimonious split-up from wife Heidi Van Pelt. But with any luck, he’ll be able to spin this into a career comeback of sorts. Next stop: Celebrity Rehab.

The most bizarre detail about Demi Moore‘s overdose was that she’d collapsed after doing whip-its—the kind of thing you’d expect from a teenager looking for a quick high, not an esteemed middle-aged actress. But now a new detail has emerged that puts Demi’s odd choice of drug in better perspective: The 911 call reveals that she was hanging out with 23-year-old daughter Rumer Willis.

On the recording, you can hear the guy on the phone to 911 shout out to the others, “Hey, Ru. What’s the name at the gate so that we can buzz them in from here?” It seems pretty likely that “Ru” is Demi’s oldest daughter (with ex-husband Bruce Willis), with whom she was seen in the weeks after her separation from Ashton Kutcher.

Talking about Demi, someone on the phone adds, “She smoked something, it’s not marijuana, it’s similar to incense. She seems to be having convulsions.” Radar Online thinks this could be not Miley Cyrus‘ drug of choice salvia, but a substance called K2 Spice. It’s sprayed with a “synthetic cannabinoid” but isn’t actually marijuana.

We wonder whose idea it was to fool around with this stuff, Demi’s or Rumer’s.

At left is Rumer visiting her mom at the hospital last week, looking frazzled and worried. We hope that Demi has a speedy recovery and that all of her family is able to relax.

Josh Radnor From How I Met Your Mother Wrote An Ayahuasca Memoir

The Internet is abuzz today with the realization that Josh Radnor from How I Met Your Mother has written, and is about to publish, a memoir called One Big Blissful Thing that’s about taking ayahuasca with a shaman in the rainforest of Brazil. The book’s description has actually been up online for a while now, but it’s flown remarkably under the radar until now.

Here is how the book’s publisher describes it on Amazon (not to be confused with the Amazon, harr harr):

The story of one man’s unlikely spiritual awakening—this is Eat, Pray, Love for those who would rather be reading McSweeney’s.

Josh Radnor grew up in Ohio. He was driven to school in a big yellow bus. He watched The Cosby Show and John Hughes movies. He also went on to become a successful actor in Hollywood. How then, in 2007, did he end up drinking an indigenous plant medicine called ayahuasca with a shaman in Brazil?

I’m pretty sure it’s not as huge a leap as the book description thinks to go from “successful actor in Hollywood” to “New Age spirituality drug tourist.” In fact, I’m pretty sure successful Hollywood actors are some of the only Americans with the time, money, and taste for appropriating the religions of other cultures to actually go and do a thing like this. And “Eat, Pray, Love for those who would rather be reading McSweeney’s” is makes about as much sense as “Kelly Clarkson for those who would rather be listening to Godspeed You! Black Emperor,” but the important thing is this: Josh Radnor is not a square, you guys. He consumed an ancient hallucinogenic vine with a shaman in the rainforest of Brazil, and it changed his whole goddamn life. Perhaps it was even the key that unlocked his gripping, tour de force performances on How I Met Your Mother. Read the book and let me know, okay?

Some photos of Rihanna smoking what appears to be a big, fat blunt while on vacation in Hawaii hit the Internet today, and they’re so stoney I think I got a little high just from looking at them. Seriously, I need to get some snacks now. Okay, that’s better.

Crushable Quotable: Ke$ha Says Writing Songs For Britney Is Better Than Drugs

Through all the brattiness and beard fetishizing, you have to remember that Ke$ha started out as a fairly successful songwriter for others, and for that, she deserves at least a modicum of respect. Not surprisingly, Ke$ha thinks so, too.

In a recent interview with MTV, the goddess of glittery garbage talked about how she wants to resurrect rock (via pop songs, oy) and maybe show a more vulnerable side of herself on her new album. She also discussed how it makes her feel each time she hears Britney Spears sing “Til The World Ends,” which she co-wrote with Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Alexander Krolund:

That song just came on the radio and I have to say, I love hearing Britney Spears sing my lyrics, every single day. It never gets old. I get so excited. It’s better than any drug when you hear Britney Spears sing a song you wrote.

Better than brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack? Better than “your love”?? Personally, I think the Eruo-housey “Til The World Ends” is the most annoying Britney song to come along in quite some time, but if it keeps Ke$ha off the harder stuff, I’m willing to support it.

Courtney Love Says She’s LiLo’s Sobriety Coach

In the latest issue of Details Magazine, the dubiously sober Courtney Love claims to have the unenviable task of being Lindsay Lohan‘s “sobriety coach.” Ever the magnanimous individual, Love tells Details, “I’ve taken up Lohan because nobody else will. She’s further down the line than I was, because there was no TMZ then.”

Is C-Love trying to blame LiLo’s constant tabloid coverage (which she courts) for her problems with drug abuse? Because that sounds like kind of a cop out. Not to mention, having Courtney Love as a sobriety coach sounds a little like having Cookie Monster as a not-eating-cookies coach. Regardless, it wouldn’t be the first time Courtney had positioned herself as the default mother hen of celebrities with drug problems. In an interview with The Fix last spring, she had this to say:

…It wasn’t that long ago when Kim Stewart was screaming, “Courtney, what are we going to do? Kelly Osbourne is blue on the floor!” Kelly wasn’t doing that well back then. For some reason, Kim Stewart also called me when Paris Hilton got pulled over for her last D.U.I. And Lindsay Lohan called me after she was arrested. The judge presiding over her case was the same judge who presided over mine. He was a very sweet man. I think he was an ex-alcoholic himself. I told Lindsay to just get it together and trust the judge, and Lindsay’s father called me for advice every day. I’m not even that friendly with these girls. What am I, a junkie Auntie Mame?

Oh, Courtney. Don’t ever change.

After all the tough talk on the judge’s part and attempts at making last minute deals on hers, Lindsay Lohan has been released from prison after serving just 4.5 hours of her 30 day sentence. According to TMZ, she “checked into” the Century Regional Detention facility at 8:48pm last night, and was released around 1:30am this morning. (Does one “check into” jail like one checks into a hotel?)

The official reason for her release was “overcrowding,” but it seems like an awfully big coincidence that the beneficiaries of this problem are often rich and famous people, no? Furthermore, this is not even the shortest amount of jail time LiLo has done; in 2007, she served just 84 minutes before being let go.

Despite currently being a free woman, LiLo still has to complete her community service at the morgue or risk serving another 270 days (i.e. five hours) in prison. Additionally, she is not allowed to leave the country while on probation, and is required to complete psychotherapy sessions and appear at monthly court hearings. Maybe they’ll rehabilitate her yet.

Lindsay Lohan Has New Mug Shot, Same Awful Dad

After having her probation revoked yesterday, everyone’s favorite troubled starlet left the courthouse in handcuffs. She’s already posted her $100,000 bail (practice makes perfect?), but not before being given the mugshot treatment once again. Her probation violation hearing has been set for November 2, at which point she might be sentenced to up to a year in jail, but the chances of her actually serving even a fraction of that are pretty slim.

Never one to miss a chance to trumpet his faux-concern for his daughter, Lindsay‘s dad Michael Lohan had this to say to HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell yesterday:

She’s an addict, she doesn’t care and she’s in denial. She’s smoking either crack or meth, either one or the other. I’m not going to shade it. I want her in a treatment program for a year. Nothing is going to change in her life. She’s going to be appearing before judges in the future if she doesn’t get help, instead of doing community service in the morgue she’s going to wind up in the morgue.

On the one hand, I’m glad someone’s saying this, because it’s most likely true. On the other, that’s a fairly shitty thing for a parent to do, no? If he really cared about Lindsay, wouldn’t he be trying to help her without creating yet more negative headlines? The degree to which Michael Lohan seems to enjoy talking about his daughter’s private issues to the media is more than a little disturbing. I mean, I feel kind of bad about doing that, and I don’t even know her. Suddenly, her massive rat’s nest of problems seems slightly more understandable.

Lindsay Lohan’s PR Rep Responds To Meth-Mouth-Gate

When I posted yesterday about the methy-looking photos of Lindsay Lohan currently circulating around the Internet, I figured it would only take her people a little while to either claim the photos were doctored, or issue a bitchy non-response. (Or tell us she’s going back to rehab, ha ha, no but seriously, she probably should.) With the help of the above headline, can you guess which of these things has already happened?

That’s right, they’ve issued a bitchy non-response! How did you get so clever? Here is what Lindsay’s rep Steve Honig told People:

Lindsay is widely acknowledged as one of the most stunning actresses of her day, and we get requests every week wanting to do photo shoots with her from top photographers. She’s been on the cover of Vanity Fair, and the top beauty and fashion magazines. She’s a beautiful and glamorous actress. With everything going on – from deteriorating public education to rampant homelessness to international unrest – there is no way I’m going to comment on Lindsay’s teeth.

Hmm. By that logic, with everything else that’s going on in the world right now, “there is no way” Mr. Honig should be working as a PR rep for Lindsay Lohan at all. He should be down at Occupy Wall Street fighting for economic justice, or helping inner city kids learn to read, or maybe passing out food, medicine and condoms in sub-Saharan Africa. But seeing as he’s not doing any of those things, it seems a bit hypocritical for him to use that as an excuse. A simple “no comment” without the heaping side of logical fallacies would have sufficed, without making him look like a self-righteous idiot in the process. Then again, this is Lindsay Lohan’s PR rep we’re talking about, a man for whom representing, say, Macaulay Culkin would constitute a huge step up.
