Billy Crystal Is Hosting The Oscars!

Sorry, Eddie Murphy, but this is a clear upgrade: Billy Crystal just announced over Twitter that he’ll be hosting the 84th Annual Academy Awards come February. Eddie Murphy stepped down as host just yesterday, after his buddy Brett Ratner got ousted as producer for homophobic comments. (His replacement, Brian Grazer, is also a win for all of us.)

This is fabulous news. Billy’s always been my personal favorite Oscars host; he gets how to wryly play off that year’s movies even if he doesn’t fit their intended demographics, and his comedy style is just humble. Plus, he works well alone; after last year’s missteps with hosting duo Anne Hathaway and James Franco, we could use a simplified show.

Here’s the tweet. Bear in mind that his reps haven’t confirmed it, nor has the Academy, but we have high hopes that it’ll all be set in stone very soon.

Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show

Additionally, we now know that Billy uses an iPad. Do you think he’ll incorporate it into his monologue this year? After all, his last time hosting was in 2004; he’s got a lot of ground to cover.

Last night was the first Country Music Awards I’ve watched in years—and it made me wish that I had tuned in for the past three years where Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted!

This was their fourth year, and they did a pretty bang-up job. Unlike the Oscars or other shows where an unfunny monologue drags on painfully, the eight minutes flew by. Probably because they skewered people gleefully and never too nastily, and didn’t leave country music out of it. They started off the night’s Barbie-doll-lookalike gags with Brad and Carrie’s delightful gift-giving of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw dolls.

Their three-person duet with Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet where they mock Kim Kardashian‘s short-lived marriage, titled “I’m Gonna Love You Forever, For 72 Days Amen,” was genius. And they were willing to turn the humor around on themselves: They make fun of Hank Williams, Jr. for the controversial comments he made on Fox and Friends, where he compared President Obama to Hitler. Some sample lyrics:

People want to know, Hank, why do you drink (before an interview!)
Why do you smoke (before an interview!)
Football ain’t the same
Without that song that you wrote
Stop and think it over
Let me help you get the picture
You can drunk and start carrying on
But you can’t compare the president to Hitler

I’m gonna say it now—can these guys take over for Eddie Murphy and host the Oscars? They know enough about celebrity scandals to keep up with jokes, and the Academy could use some fresh blood.

Eddie Murphy Drops Out As 2012 Oscars Host In Solidarity With Tower Heist Director Brett Ratner

With Brett Ratner ousted as a producer of the upcoming Academy Awards after he used a gay slur, Eddie Murphy has decided to throw away his last chance at becoming relevant again and will not host the show in February. Who knew that Tower Heist inspired such loyalty?

The announcement came from Tom Sherak at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” he said.

Here’s Eddie’s statement:

First and foremost, I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure the new production team and host will do an equally great job.

This seems like a horrible idea. It’s not as if Brett were let go unfairly; this move makes Eddie sound like he supports Brett’s use of “fag” and other insulting behavior. The opportunity to host the Oscars was already unexpected; you can bet he won’t get this chance again.

Of course now the question is, who will replace host and producer? Comedian Colin Quinn is currently making a good case for him and Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers to team up:

I’ll even write the monologue. Hey, this is some crowd here tonight. Occupy Wall Street. This crowd occupies Rodeo drive!

Then a couple of Betty White jokes, then a couple of funny but edgy jokes about republican debates, then how rich the people in the room r.

Also, since when are Eddie and Brett actually friends? Apparently they really bonded while shooting Tower Heist, since it’s the only movie on which they’ve worked together. (However, in an interview last month Brett said, “If it wasn’t for Eddie, Rush Hour [Brett's first film] wouldn’t exist, for sure. I grew up watching 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop. He invented the genre.”)

Even though Tower Heist had a meager opening at the box office last weekend, Brett’s already said that he and Eddie will work on another movie together. He wouldn’t give TheWrap specifics, though he did clarify that it’s not the long-anticipated Beverly Hills Cop 4. All he would say was, “I’d make anything with Eddie.”

Good luck getting people to see it, though.

Forbes Magazine has just released a list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood, and the list tops out with none other than one of America’s sweethearts, Drew Barrymore. To figure this list out, they took the last three non-animated features each actor has starred in over the past three years. They then divided the amount all three of each star’s movies made put together by the total amount the star had been paid, to find out how many dollars the star brought in for each dollar he or she received.

Interestingly enough, the only star who actually lost people money was Drew Barrymore, who returned only 40 cents for each dollar she was paid. Everyone else delivered at least some returns. The entire list is as follows:

1. Drew Barrymore – $0.40
2. Eddie Murphy – $2.70
3. Will Ferrell – $3.50
4. Reese Witherspoon – $3.55
5. Denzel Washington – $4.25
6. Nicolas Cage – $4.40
7. Adam Sandler – $5.20
8. Vince Vaughn – $5.20
9. Tom Cruise – $6.35
10. Nicole Kidman – $6.70

Oh, Eddie Murphy, how far thou hast fallen. I was initially sort of surprised to see a-listers like Vince Vaughn and Denzel Washington on this list, but grew less so when I found out their recent films include Couples Retreat and something called The Book Of Eli, respectively.

On the flip side, I’m surprised Katherine Heigl is not on the list, because isn’t she sort of universally hated by everyone at this point? I should add that financial success is not necessarily an indicator of how good a movie is (I mean, Transformers did really well), but when discussing the kinds of Hollywood blockbusters these people tend to appear in, it’s fairly accurate.

We’ve got to applaud Steve Martin for being a comedian who can keep up with the times. He typed out this letter for Eddie Murphy (who’ll be hosting the Academy Awards on February 27, 2012) probably knowing that it would end up on BuzzFeed; he references Internet favorite Neil Patrick Harris; and he even gets in a dig at us bloggers!

Well played, Steve. Are you sure you can’t put on your co-host pants and join Eddie up on-stage? You two were pretty great in Bowfinger…

Melanie Brown, better known as Scary Spice, the only black member of the 90′s girl band, the Spice Girls, is four months pregnant with Eddie Murphy‘s child.

Rumors has it that Eddie Murphy and Scary Spice will marry next month, well before the anticipated birth of the baby – or babies. According to Scary Spice, who is concerned that she may be pregnant with twins, since she pointed out that twins allegedly run in Eddie Murphy’s family.

Being the mom of twins myself, I have always been under the impression that it runs on the mother’s side. Me thinks Ms. Scary so-to-be Murphy is just wishful thinking on the twins. But hey, I think everyone should have at least one set.
