Emmy Nominations: Our Early Picks For Comedy, Drama, Miniseries, and More

The Emmy nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles. Here’s the complete list of nominees, with my comments below.

Best Comedy Series

The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
30 Rock

I think the bloom is off the rose for both 30 Rock and The Office. Returning champ Modern Family is definitely the show to beat.

Best Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men

This is FNL’s last season, and the hugely acclaimed show didn’t score any noms until last year. This is its first and last time being nominated for best drama, and it would be a huge victory if the underdog show could pull it out. They face strong competition from the two HBO entries, though, so it’s anybody’s game.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy

Laura Linney, The Big C
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Tina Fey, 30 Rock

As much as I adore Tina Fey, she has already won several times and this was an uneven season of 30 Rock. I’d love to see Melissa McCarthy – who was on hand to announce the nominees this morning and is riding high on the success of Bridesmaids – get some love, and Amy Poehler is doing fantastic work this year. Edie Falco is the reigning winner in this category, but I still maintain that Nurse Jackie is not a comedy.

Have you ever met a single person who has watched Episodes? I haven’t. It would be a huge but awesome upset if Louis CK was able to snag a trophy, but he should be really proud of getting nominated.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama

Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Timothy Olyphant, Justified

Though Buscemi is probably the favorite, I’m a Friday Night Lights fangirl, and a big part of the reason why is Kyle Chandler’s nuanced performance. His work might be *too* subtle, though. It would also be great to see Hugh Laurie, who has been nominated for years without a single win, finally take some hardware home before the series ends next year.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Kathy Bates, Harry’s Law

There was a huge burn in this category, as last year’s winner Kyra Sedgwick didn’t even get nominated. The odds-on favorite is Julianna Margulies, but I’d love to see Mireille Enos or Connie Britton win here.

Top 5 Emmy Award Smackdowns And Snubs

The Primetime Emmy Award nominations are here! And Glee nabbed a bunch. That’s awesome and all, but let’s bypass the kudos and round up the snubs, shall we? And while we’re at it, we’ll list the biggest smackdowns, starting with …

1. Matthew Morrison Vs. Michael Scott: The brillow-headed Matt M. is up for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy for Glee; Michael Scott – er, Steve CARELL – is nominated in the SAME category. Who will win? While Drew hates Matthew with an undying passion that I don’t quite understand, I’ll have to go with Mr. Schue because he’s new and everyone loves a rookie on a top-rated show! That said, Steve is the most nuanced comic actor working today – but his time will come next year, after he leaves The Office nest.

2. Zach Gilford and Friday Night Lights: There is no excuse to snub Zach, aka “Saracen” for his stellar, wrenching work on Friday Night Lights – we’re certain the good people at Popeater, who have a campaign to win him an Emmy, are none too pleased. At least Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton were recognized. Still. Enough Dexter and serial killer crap! More FNL! Real people, real problems, and hot people too. It’s not ALL about the football. It’s about life. Watch it with Kleenex.

3. Ben Linus versus John Locke: Worlds are colliding! Creepy-awesome Michael Emerson (Ben) is competing against fellow Lost-ie Terry O’Quinn (Locke, duh) in the best-supporting-actor-in-a-drama slot, and we don’t know who will win this smackdown because we lurve them both, and each is equally deserving. Thoughts?? (Our money’s on Terry because he was SO good I could easily tell the difference between Good Locke and Bad Locke. And Final Season Ben Linus was kind of a wuss).

4. No Real Housewives: Not only has American Idol NOT won in the Outstanding Reality-Competition category, but Amazing Race wins every damn year. BORING!! With the exception of this past season with winner Lee Dewyze, American Idol is the greatest and most important reality show of all time for reasons I’ll explain later. But the Real Housewives, snubbed from this slot!? Bravo’s hit franchise of catfights, delusions and status anxiety embodies the word “competition.” Someone ought to give the Real Housewives their own category with the cities competing against each other. New York would win, hands down, thanks to Jill Zarin and Kelly Bensimon.

5. Charlie Sheen MIA: Finally! The Emmy heard my prayers! Charlie Sheen is NOT nominated for Two And A Half Men this year. Who wants to reward an entitled chauvinist douche-hat?

‘Glee’ Stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison And Chris Colfer Snag Emmy Nominations

The Emmy Awards nominations have been announced, and as expected, Glee snagged a handful of categories including best comedy and acting nods for stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch – and, in a bit of a pleasant surprise, scene-stealer Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt on the hit Fox dramedy.

Matthew’s nomination no doubt as Crushable associate editor Drew Grant fuming! The brillow-headed triple-threat was recognized in the category of outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. His competition is stiff: There’s Steve Carell, The Office; Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock; Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm; Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory; and Tony Shalhoub, who is never NOT nominated for Monk.

His Glee co-star Lea is nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy. She competes alongside Tina Fey (30 Rock), Amy Poehler (Parks And Recreation), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures Of Old Christine) and Toni Collette (United States of Tara).

Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer were nominated as outstanding supporting actress/actor in a comedy, respectively, with Chris nudging out expected nominee Zach Gilford, who was snubbed for his work on Friday Night Lights. Fortunately, FNL-ers Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton were singled out for outstanding lead actor/actress in a drama series.

Otherwise, we’d have to have words with the Emmy board! (See the full list of nominees HERE).

Tyra Banks on The View

On April 30, Tyra Banks made an appearance on the daytime show The View. She chats about she wants an Emmy nomination and how no one believed her talk show would make it. She also talks about “how hard” it is to have a long torso and she needed to learn how to work it.

Do you think Tyra deserves an Emmy for her work on the talk show? I always find her show to be over-the-top and cheesy. But what do I know?
