• A pump-you-up playlist
Nothing kills a pre-party like dead silence. Before inviting your friends over, create the Ultimate Party Soundtrack on your iPod. You don’t want it to overpower the conversation though, and a pre-party is not to be confused with its cousin, the 80s dance party. So mix in some MGMT for relevance, Jay-Z for cred, and some Justin Bieber just to mix things up. You want to get people pumped, but not too pumped that they’re tuckered out before 10. But it’s not a tea party or social club, so keep away from the light or emo stuff.

• Snacks
You’re going to want alcohol at your party, or else why would people come (J/k!). But starting your pre-game early means running the risk of your friends getting too drunk and sloppy before the real party begins. So invest in chips, crackers, popcorn, anything that Trader Joe’s sells in the isle with all the shiny bags, and some veggies with dip (for your health-conscious friends). You’ll thank us later.

• Energy drinks
Maybe to be combined with the alcohol, although we heard Four Loco is kind of dangerous. We say go with Sparks: it’s got a retro quality and your friends will be impressed that you were able to score the original malt energizer. Again, see the rule above and make sure the alcohol is put away in the fridge instead of just hanging out on tables: making people actually have to get up and get another drink instead of reaching for the closest booze is the best way to limit their intoxication levels.

• Some not too thought-intensive games
It may sound lame, but the idea is to take people’s minds off counting down the hours until the real party begins.Having a game like Apples to Apples or Scategories is a fun way to pass the time with a semi-sized group, and will keep people sharp enough that they won’t end up trying to make out with the first guy they see once you get to your party.

• A pile of clothes and extra makeup
You know halfway through their second drink, your friends are going to start complaining about their hair, makeup, etc. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have a bunch of tops and dresses (nothing that you wouldn’t mind getting some stains on, because you never know what might happen later) lying out for those finicky friends. That way: no closet-rifling! Also keep some cheap, Duane Reade makeup handy: you don’t want them rifling your cabinets for the good stuff either.

Reading from a teleprompter, Katrina made the audience giggle as she played the vapid actress role to a tee — she was almost a little too good at it. Her witty clips could have come from the mouth of her 30 Rock character. At one point, Larry, who was recently elected president of the magazine association, announced that the presentation was halfway over. “And that means, we’re going to watch a clip of my very funny show, 30 Rock,” Katrina announced, turning to the big screen behind her. “No, that’s not going to happen now,” Larry said.

Katrina may have been typecast as the dumb blonde, but her strategic pairing with Larry on stage may get her a People cover…some day. However, next time we see Katrina we want her to challenge the stereotype and play the intellectual.
