Evermore are back with a brand new single, “Underground,” which picks up right where the lads’ last album, Truth of the World left off. It seems they’ve left their early whiny songs behind and replaced them with a healthy dose of edge. I for one am happy to see how these New Zealand born lads have manned up!

Evermore clearly impressed Pink during her recent Australian tour. The American popstar loved their support slot so much, she’s invited the lads to tour with her around Europe.

The New Zealand expats will head to Dublin on October 12 to start the tour, which will take in several European locations over 11 weeks.

“After a leisurely stroll around beautiful Australia, meeting 10,000 friendly locals every night on the Funhouse tour, P!nk has made us an offer we couldn’t refuse to join her on tour all across UK and Europe,” said Peter Hume. “We could not have had this chance without such a good response from everyone who came to the P!nk shows in Australia, so thank YOU for being crazy and loud.”

To coincide with the tour, Warner Brothers will release a greatest hits album in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, Ireland, and Nordic regions. The disc will feature singles from Evermore’s three previous albums. UK radio will also receive “Hey Boys and Girls” next week.

“After being in this band together for ten years this is the first opportunity we have had to tour and release an album in UK/Europe and we are incredibly excited about getting over there!” Peter added. “This will be our debut album for the rest of the world, we feel all nervy and young again.”

Of course, if Europe gets a greatest hits Australia deserves one too. That will be released in November, with three new singles and a bonus disc of unreleased material adding value for diehard fans.

The opportunity to play Europe means Evermore will reschedule some upcoming dates. However, Victorian shows will go ahead as planned. Aussies and Europeans: you can see Evermore at the following venues!

You’ve got to admire Evermore’s Peter Hume. He was up late entertaining crowds at the launch of the band’s new album Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show, yet the next morning at 9 am he was calling me for a chat. He might have been little sleepy, but he was happy to talk about his ambitious new recording.

You had your album launch in Sydney last night. How did that go?
Really well, really well. It was the first time we’ve had basically the whole thing together, the whole show, all our screens and all new songs, it was cool. It was great to see, I think a few people were surprised.

Is it hard fronting up for interviews first thing in the morning after a big night like that?
This is the first one so you’ll have to bear with me a little bit.

I’ve heard so many music critics say that the concept album is dead, yet your new album Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show definitely falls into the concept album category. What made you decide to record this epic piece of music?
I think we’ve always loved ambitious music, and we’ve especially always loved albums we’ve grown up on like Pink Floyd and The Who. We’ve never just thought it was about three-and-a-half minute songs. Our very first record, Dreams, was going to be a concept album. We just really didn’t have the experience to finish it. We wanted to make an album that really excited us, and that really stretched us as songwriters. And it seemed like a good idea, especially when you’ve got multiple songwriters in the band to have a story or a structure that you can all contribute to.

You’ve had such success with radio-friendly singles in the past. Did you ever worry about alienating your audience by producing something so different?
Not really. I suppose you don’t think about that at the time. I suppose we were just really getting into music again. We’d moved down to Melbourne, and we’d built our own studio, and Jon was producing the record, and it was just the three of us hanging out. We were just having a lot of fun. I hope that gets across in the album. I don’t think that so far it’s alienated anybody, but we’ll wait and see.

You mentioned that your brother Jon produced the album this time around. It was the first time that you haven’t worked with producers outside the band. What was it like having him on that side of things?
Oh, great. Jon’s always done a lot of the production for the last three records. We do a lot of it in Australia, or in New Zealand for the first record, and then we’d finish it off in America with a name producer. I think every album we’ve wanted Jon to produce, but this is the first time they’ve let us! I suppose it’s sort of a big thing, especially when you’re younger, to go “Yeah, you can produce the whole thing.” They’re all kind of worrying how it’ll turn out. But we were confident. We know his abilities.

You offered the first single from the album as a free download. When so many musicians are against free music online, what made you decide to just give the single away?
We really just wanted to get it out there. We really wanted people to hear our new sound, and as many people as possible, not necessarily people who had ever thought of buying an Evermore single.

How important is the internet as a promotional tool these days?
The internet is huge. We’ve got a really good online community on our website, and on our MySpace and things like that. We used that from really early on. It’s probably the best way to find out about new music. I think that’s how most people find out about new music, through MySpace and things like that.

I can’t imagine ever working with my sisters. What’s it like being in a band with your brothers?
It’s pretty easy actually, because you’ve got that experience behind you. There’s a lot of room for forgiveness. People always ask us that, and I don’t really know because I haven’t had any other experience. I think all bands are slightly kind of claustrophobic. They’re full on things because you’re hanging out with each other all the time. So being family doesn’t seem to be that much of a stretch.

You left New Zealand to pursue your music career in Australia. Was that a hard decision?
I don’t think we made the decision at the time. We couldn’t afford to fly back! We got offered some shows in Australia and we were just like “Well we’re just going to live in Australia, sleep on people’s floors, and see what happens.” I think maybe if we’d had heaps of money we would have gone backwards and forwards for a while. But I think we really fell in love with living here and I don’t think we’re moving for the moment.

You guys have enjoyed such success with your music. What keeps you grounded?
I suppose being a band with your brothers keeps you pretty grounded, because they’ve known you since you were a toddler. I think that would probably be a big grounding experience.

When are you planning on getting out and touring this album?
Really soon hopefully. I think we’re going to be announcing a tour in the next couple of weeks. It’s a kind of multimedia show we’re playing. The giant screens from the video clips are coming along with us. It’ll be a lot of fun.

And finally, do you have a message for your Australian fans out there?
We look forward to seeing you all on the road!

They’ll unleash their third album Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show on March 21.

We can expect much more than a mish-mash of radio-friendly songs here, as lead singer Jon Hume explains.

“I heard someone say that albums were dead … and everyone just wants three minute songs these days. That’s exactly what we are trying to fight with this record,” he said in a statement.

“We hit reset on what this band was about, threw everything out and just imagined the record we would want to hear someone else make. Something you could put on and not ever want to hit skip… one piece of music that ebbs and flows but never stops. It’s a concept album that takes inspiration from trash entertainment, news headlines and political propaganda, and turns it into an over the top, fun, rock’n'roll show.”

You can catch that “over the top, fun, rock’n’roll show” when the lads hit the road in April and May. Stay tuned for the dates when they’re released!

A few months ago I mentioned Evermore was offering free downloads of their new single “Between the Lines.” Now the song’s been released officially, and we can see the film clip. It’s a new darker direction for the lads, and I’m not just talking about the CSI-style lighting in the music video! But a change is as good as a holiday, and their risk taking has really paid dividends here. I love it!

Lead singer Jon Hume said the song was inspired by the different media coverage he saw looking at Thai and Sydney newspapers on a stopover in Thailand.

“They were both touting stories of the APEC and the G8 summit, but displaying almost everyone in a very different shade of colour. Policies, quotes, promises were different. It was charming editorialism at it’s best. That was when I realized that if you don’t make up your own mind, someone’s gonna make it up for you. Therein was the theme of looking between the lines,” he explained in a press statement.

“Musically, the song came to us at the beginning of a search for a new musical experience for us as a band. We feel like this song is a big departure for us and wanna give everyone a chance to hear it. That’s why we’re giving it away. If you like us or hate us, give this new track a spin. It’s free music without the guilt!”

Jon makes perfect sense! Head to Evermore’s official website to download this fab new song!

Considering their recent pairing with Iggy Pop, it seems the rock outfit’s self imposed exile is well and truly over.

Jet will share the bill with local legends Eskimo Joe, Evermore, The Butterfly Effect, and Operator Please. More acts will be announced closer to the date, so expect it to be massive.

The organisers anticipate big crowds so they’re moving Odyssey from its Dreamworld home to Carrara Sports Complex.

Sounds like a fun way to ring in the New Year. If you want to go, grab your tickets through the website when they go on sale tomorrow.

The elite of the Australian music industry gathered in Sydney last night for the ARIA Number One Chart Awards. The ceremony recognised the achievements of Aussie chart toppers.

Twelve local artists were honoured for their number one albums and singles. Delta Goodrem was lauded as the first Aussie to earn 12 number ones when she claimed two gongs for the single “In This Life” and album Delta.

Delta told The Daily Telegraph that while she will spend a lot of time there this year, she won’t relocate to the United States.

“I intend to spend a lot of time there but Australia is still home,” she said.

Also earning dual awards on the night were Kylie Minogue (for “2 Hearts” and X), Damien Leith (The Winner’s Journey and Where We Land) and Silverchair (“Straight Lines” and Young Modern).

The Veronicas were also thrilled to achieve their first award for the massive dance single “Hook Me Up.”

“I think we’ve been number two and never quite got up to that number one spot. [We were like] whatever, our first album was in the top 10 for a year, that’s better than a lot of people. We don’t care about being number one,” the Brisbane twins said.

“And then when they called us and said we’d gone to number one we were like ‘Yeah!’ and we were really excited. We were like ‘Oh we do care about winning. We’re winners now.’”

The John Butler Trio, Powderfinger, and Evermore also took home awards on the night.

The ARIA Number One Chart Awards differ from the standard ARIA awards as winners are decided solely based on their retail sales.
