			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="vidembedwrap"><object width="640" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vS9H3vc49kY?version=3&ap=%2526fmt%3D18"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vS9H3vc49kY?version=3&ap=%2526fmt%3D18" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="480"></embed></object></div>
<p>A video that is currently making its Internet rounds shows two gay dads&#8217; reactions when their daughter and her partner (or son and his partner, maybe?) reveal that they&#8217;re going to have a baby. One gay dad drops an f-bomb and freaks out for a full minute. Oh my God! He is so excited! Oh my God!</p>
<p>This is especially heartwarming considering the fact that both dads most likely grew up in an era in which being a parent, let alone a grandparent, seemed out of reach for them. You can bet they are going to spoil that kid like nobody&#8217;s business. I&#8217;m sort of jealous of how much love and attention he/she is going to grow up with.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there are still people who don&#8217;t believe that <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2011/08/15/295737/michele-bachmann-gay-families-not-families/">families like this are really &#8216;families&#8217;</a> and are working tirelessly to withhold rights from them. (Or in some cases, take away rights they already have.) But despite the fact that many Americans hold deeply Christian fundamentalist worldviews (I realize not all Christians hate gays), support for this type of bigotry is eroding. I imagine videos like this will only make more and more people wonder how on Earth anyone could hate gay dudes.</p>

<p>What happens when you go against God&#8217;s law and allow two women to hold hands and raise babies together? Apparently, you get an accomplished, well-spoken young man with superior logical capabilities. Superior to the people who tried and failed at codifying discrimination into the state&#8217;s constitution, and certainly superior to the breathless religious wingnut who spoke after him.</p>
<p>In this video, University of Iowa engineering student <strong>Zach Walls</strong> speaks powerfully about all the things that make a family a family. Not on the list: the sexual orientation of the parents. Unfortunately, this wasn&#8217;t enough to keep House Joint Resolution 6, which would have ended civil unions in Iowa, from passing. However, as long as democrats control the state senate, it will never come up for a vote there, ensuring marriage equality in Iowa in the immediate future.</p>
<p>The kid from the video just participated in an interesting <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/mvhnh/i_am_zach_wahls_the_guy_who_defended_my_two_moms/">Ask Me Anything thread</a> on Reddit, in which he discussed his family life in a little more detail. He also revealed that the person who spoke after him was this kook:</p>
<div class="vidembedwrap"><object width="640" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oBGJHrnziTc?version=3&ap=%2526fmt%3D18"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oBGJHrnziTc?version=3&ap=%2526fmt%3D18" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="480"></embed></object></div>
<p>Since when is it okay to use purely biblical arguments in a government debate? And I don&#8217;t want to be all &#8220;methinks he doth protest too much,&#8221; but I would like to at least float the possibility that we could be watching a beneficiary of a &#8220;pray the gay away&#8221; program. As you can see, it was highly effective&#8230;at making him a jerk!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-339185" title="148441552v12_480x480_Front" src="http://cdn.crushable.com/files/2010/11/148441552v12_480x480_Front-280x167.jpg" alt="" width="280" height="167" />Thanksgiving is coming up in two weeks, which means for most of us it&#8217;s time to pack all our dirty laundry for mom to do, stock up on Valium, and head home to see the family. As you grow older though, something strange happens: Thanksgiving is no longer about listening to your parents fight with your grandma, or the last minute rush after the oven stops working and you need to put the turkey in the neighbor&#8217;s stove. No, Thanksgiving has been deemed the official holiday made possible by marijuana.</p>
<p>It makes perfect sense. Take the most stressful holiday &#8211; the one that involves the most cooking, the most amount of people over for a sit-down, potentially volatile meal &#8211; and add a little bit of weed to the mix? Well, suddenly the thought of eating 20 pounds of turkey and mashed potatoes seems awesome.</p>
<p>Then there&#8217;s the parental issue: I&#8217;m not sure if this happens in the majority of households, but I&#8217;m willing to bet if you did a study about kids that split an occasional spliff with mom and dad, you&#8217;d find that the majority of them started the tradition one Thanksgiving after graduating high school or college and coming home. It implies you are an adult who can finally see your parents as people too, not the strict enforcers who grounded you when they found out you drank vodka on prom night.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t just listen to me, just look at movies like <em>The Family Stone</em>, <em>Home for the Holidays</em>, or most flashbacks in <em>Six Feet Under</em>, all of which feature adults partaking in a little peace-pipe smoking with their children. I&#8217;m not endorsing doing drugs under your parent&#8217;s roof, of course, but if you&#8217;re going to be smoking (or eating) weed anyway this holiday season, consider making it a family affair. Worst-case scenario: your parents freak out, you laugh it off as a joke, and you sit down for your awkward meal after toking by yourself. Best case? You&#8217;ve created a new family tradition, everyone gets the munchies, and you spend the entire dinner laughing and stuffing your faces. And isn&#8217;t that what Thanksgiving is all about?</p>

<description><![CDATA[After you graduate college, you may decide to travel the road less taken. You know what that means: no temping for you, you're going to start your own tech business, or become a graphic illustrator, or perhaps a taxidermist. And your parents? Well, they might fall into that category of which <strong>Will Smith</strong> once rapped about.

And in the off chance that your parents don't just "understand" why they threw $40k down the hole so you could apply for grants to put on your gallery show of menstruation dollies, you don't have to feel alone anymore. A new web documentary series called "How to Explain It To My Parents" showcases 5 abstract artists trying to explain to their parents what they do for a living. The results are...sort of what you'd expect. Watch this first episode between micro-brewer <strong>Arno Coenen</strong> and his father. Awwwwkward! <a href="http://crushable.com/relationships/video-how-to-explain-to-your-family-what-you-do-for-a-living/">More &#187;</a><p>Post from: <a href="http://crushable.com">Crushable</a></p>

We&#8217;ve asked three guys &#8212; Darcy, Keith and Dave &#8212; for their thoughts on sleepovers, your snoring (&#8220;I think it can be cute&#8221;) and whether its important for you to have a good relationship with your family (&#8220;I think it’s important, because I want to have a good relationship with her family, too&#8221;). What do you think about their answers? Do you agree?</p>
<p><strong>How long do you have to be dating a girl to invite her over for a sleepover that’s not just a one-night hook up?</strong></p>
<p>Keith: Obviously it varies from person to person, but as long as you are personally comfortable with where you are, it’s a very personal thing. You need to be comfortable with yourself and what you want and believe in. I would say a couple of weeks, depending on what the relationship is and what you’re looking for.</p>
<p>Dave: I don’t think you have to have a specific set amount of time. You should just enjoy every moment as it comes. If you start limiting what you will or won’t do because you worry about how you’ll feel the next morning, then you’ll be living a half-fulfilled life.</p>
<div class="vidembedwrap"><object width="640" height="532" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://b5vid.com:8888/player/player.swf"><param name="movie" value="http://b5vid.com:8888/player/player.swf"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"><param name="flashvars" value="&file=http://b5vid.com:8888/xml_playlist.php?id=53&logo=http://cdn.b5media.com/hubs-v3/crushable.com/images/watermark.gif&smoothing=true&displayclick=play&bufferlength=3&stretching=fill&skin=http://b5vid.com:8888/player/grungetape.swf"/></object><div class="embed-flow"><form name="b5linkForm53"><label class="b5embed">Share this video on your own site:</label><br /><input class="b5embed" name="video_shortcode" value="<script type='text/javascript' src='http://crushable.com/embed?id=53'></script>" size="79" onclick="javascript:document.b5linkForm53.video_shortcode.focus();document.b5linkForm53.video_shortcode.select();" readonly="readonly" /></form></div></div>
<p><strong><br />
How do you feel about girls bringing a toothbrush or change of clothes with them when they first start sleeping over your place?</strong></p>
<p>Darcy: I’m fine with the change of clothes, but I have plenty of toothbrushes. My mother was an oral hygienist.</p>
<p>Keith: I think that’s great. If you’re an adult, you’re most likely prepared for any situation, so why not be prepared for that?</p>
<p>Dave: I don’t think it’s really that big of a deal. Now, if she ends up leaving her stuff and starts bringing things over on a regular basis and tries to move in, that could be a little weird.</p>
<p><strong>How do you feel about girls who snore?</strong></p>
<p>Darcy: I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed if a girl was snoring. I sleep too soundly.</p>
<p>Dave: I think it can be cute when it first happens, but if you’re in a long term relationship and the girl snores, just like if the guy snores, it can be annoying if you’re a light sleeper. Thankfully, I’m a heavy sleeper.</p>
<div class="vidembedwrap"><object width="640" height="532" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://b5vid.com:8888/player/player.swf"><param name="movie" value="http://b5vid.com:8888/player/player.swf"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"><param name="flashvars" value="&file=http://b5vid.com:8888/xml_playlist.php?id=54&logo=http://cdn.b5media.com/hubs-v3/crushable.com/images/watermark.gif&smoothing=true&displayclick=play&bufferlength=3&stretching=fill&skin=http://b5vid.com:8888/player/grungetape.swf"/></object><div class="embed-flow"><form name="b5linkForm54"><label class="b5embed">Share this video on your own site:</label><br /><input class="b5embed" name="video_shortcode" value="<script type='text/javascript' src='http://crushable.com/embed?id=54'></script>" size="79" onclick="javascript:document.b5linkForm54.video_shortcode.focus();document.b5linkForm54.video_shortcode.select();" readonly="readonly" /></form></div></div>
<p><strong>How important is it to you that a girl you’re dating has a good relationship with her family?</strong></p>
<p>Darcy: I think it’s important, because I want to have a good relationship with her family, too, if it works out.</p>
<p>Keith: In my own situation with my fiancé, she’s really close to both her mom and her father, and it worked out really well. I’m from the Midwest and I wasn’t used to being around a Long Island family, which can be a little different from a Midwestern family. She’s close to her father, and so I was able to ask her what to expect, and he was exactly the way she had described. Someone who has a close relationship with their family can give you more personal feedback.</p>
<p>Dave: I like for a girl to have a good relationship with her family, because I think there are a lot of issues that we all have that stem from family, good and bad. I think they can be heightened when a girl has a weird relationship with her mom or dad.<br />
<strong><br />
How important is it to you that a girl you are seeing seriously has a good relationship with your family?</strong></p>
<p>Darcy: Very important, because my family and I are close.</p>
<p>Keith: I think it’s tremendously important. My parents are always going to be very connected to me, but you want them to be connected to your girlfriend as well. If you’re going to be with them for a long time, they’re going to see each other many times over the years. You want them to get along, otherwise it’s going to create friction upfront and problems and fights down the road.</p>

<p><strong>Would you ever break up with someone who your family didn’t approve of?</strong></p>
<p>Darcy: I don’t know. I’ve never been in that situation.</p>
<p>Keith: I don’t know if I would break up, but it would cause me to reevaluate the relationship. I’m not one of those people who outwardly thinks about my relationship, but something like that would make me think about it.</p>
<p>Dave: Only if my family had some very good reasons to dislike her would I consider ending the relationship because of them.</p>
<p><strong>If you could ask a girl any one question and you knew she was going to be honest, what would you ask?</strong></p>
<p>Keith: To me, trust is a big thing in relationships. So, I would ask, why should I trust you? What makes you trustworthy? And I’d want to see a really concrete answer or response.</p>
<p>Dave: I read a statistic recently about women not being interested in sex. I’m wondering why are you not interested in having sex?</p>

Coming out as gay is probably the biggest one, right up there with teen pregnancy and any other lifechanging event. It&#8217;s undoubtedly a difficult discussion to have, and one that many gay teens put off because they are afraid how their loved ones will react. But if it&#8217;s something that you&#8217;re contemplating, we have some advice on how to approach it.</p>
<p><strong>Brianna</strong>, 26, was a senior in high school when she came out to her parents. Bri was lucky enough to have a therapist at the time &#8212; her parents had sent her to see someone to deal with panic attacks &#8212; something many teens may not have. Bri came out to her therapist and the doctor coached her through coming out to her family and friends. &#8220;The most important thing she told me was that the people who know me will pretty much know I&#8217;m gay,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not going to be as much of a shock to them as you think.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bri&#8217;s therapist also told her that when her parents were ready to know whether or not she was gay, they would ask her. And ultimately, that was exactly what happened. One night, Bri was in the middle of a fight with her mom, &#8220;which happened frequently in high school,&#8221; she said. Bri recalled that they were fighting over something relating to Boo, Bri&#8217;s best friend who she was also dating, although her parents didn&#8217;t know about the initimate side of their relationship. &#8220;My mom just came out and asked me, &#8216;Are you gay?&#8217; And I said, &#8216;Mom, I am. I&#8217;m gay,&#8217;&#8221; she said. Bri&#8217;s mom stormed out of the room, not knowing how to handle the situation. Her dad later came in to talk to her. He was comforting and reassured her that both her parents would love her no matter what. &#8220;He said all the things you want your dad to say in that situation,&#8221; Bri told us. </p>
<p>While traumatic, Bri&#8217;s coming out was ultimately a good experience, and her mother has come around over the years to accept Bri for who she is. Bri said she saw a change several years after she came out, when she was graduating college and considering breaking up with her longterm girlfriend, Boo. &#8220;My mom realized that even if I wasn&#8217;t with Boo, I was still going to be with women,&#8221; she said. &#8220;She finally got me. Our relationship got a lot stronger from that point on.&#8221;</p>
<p>Having gone through it herself, and talked about the process with her friends and girlfriends who also had to come out to family and friends, Bri has some tips for anyone thinking of tackling this delicate topic:</p>
<p><b>Start with people close to you</b><br />
&#8220;If you&#8217;re not comfortable with telling certain people or if you&#8217;re really afraid of the way that certain people will react to you, maybe you&#8217;re not ready to come out to those people,&#8221; Bri said. Practice by coming out to your really close friends, the ones who you know will never judge you or treat you differently. Then move on to the people who you think should know, like your parents.</p>
<p><b>Be confident</b><br />
If you&#8217;re sure about what you&#8217;re saying, the people who you&#8217;re telling will be more ready to accept your decision. Frequently, parents who are not ready to accept that their child is gay will think it&#8217;s &#8220;just a phase,&#8221; and if you&#8217;re wishy-washy about how you present it and yourself, they&#8217;ll be more apt to feel that way. </p>
<p><b>Seek help</b><br />
Although you may not be lucky enough to get help from a personal therapist, there are lots of places to seek help. Schools offer counselors and many are setting up support groups for gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and questioning teens and young people. Don&#8217;t be afraid to ask for help and support or answers to your questions.</p>
