The Daily WTF: Fast Food Companies Could Be Using Aborted Fetuses In Their Food

I haven’t felt this nauseous since I read that urban legend about a pus-filled chicken sandwich. The newest allegation against PepsiCo is that they’re partnering with a company called Senomyx, which has been up to some shady business. Oklahoma State Senator Ralph Shortey has gone so far as to draw up a bill banning the manufacture of all fast food that uses aborted fetuses.

As Liz Lemon would say, “What the what?”

According to Shortey’s bill, Senomyx “has been accused of using proteins derived from human embryonic kidney cells in its research.” These cells have been used in researching and developing products, including in the realm of artificial flavoring. What the heck do kidney cells have to do with making something taste extra beefy?

Of course, Shortey doesn’t have any actual proof that this is going on. His bill is intended to be more of a failsafe against the Soylent Green kind of future, should fast food companies ever feel the need to turn us into cannibals. Whether it’s true or not, it’s bizarre enough to make us say WTF.

Good news: Gawker has done some digging, and so far McDonald’s, PepsiCo, and Nestle are all clear. (Then again, if you had asked the food companies in Soylent Green if they were dealing in human cells, they probably would have denied it, too.) No word yet from companies like Kraft and Burger King.

As a promotional tie-in with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace‘s 3D re-release in February, Quick is offering customers a chance to “choose your side of the force” by ordering either the relatively edible-looking (but only by comparison) Jedi Burger, or the dark and evil “Darth Vador Burger,” which features a sinister black bun. (That’s how they spell his name en Francais, you see.) Darth Vador is obviously way cooler than Luke Skywalkor, but what kinds of bitter interplanetary wars will ol’ Darth start in your insides? Find out if you dare, and may the farts be with you.

Sure, McDonald’s and KFC may be terrible for you, but Taco Bell may actually improve your lifestyle. It’s not just that chalupas are delicious (even though they totally are), but sometimes you accidentally get thousands of dollars in cash instead of your #4 order. A late-night employee gave a woman in Dayton, Ohio a bag filled with $2,000 in cash that was meant for the safe deposit box instead of her burrito order, and she had high-tailed it out of there before he could realize his mistake. Or gotten her license plate number. From which we take away: Since when did Ohio Taco Bells start making $2 grand on a daily basis? No wonder our country is so obese.

Lindsay Lohan’s Pretzel Lunch

Lindsay Lohan met up with some friends yesterday for lunch at Wetzel’s Pretzels in Glendale, where Lindsay also did some shopping. At one point, Lindsay had to request security come to assist her in keeping the photographers at bay.

Part way through her day, Lindsay changed her outfit slightly. She swapped out the blue & purple loose shirt and put on a short white blouse. It definitely is more attractive!
