In the last few years, I’ve gotten into cooking for myself and my roommates; furthermore, I take actual enjoyment in learning about the mechanics of a specific dish. I’ll quiz my dad about what alterations he made to a given recipe, asking about minute details. I watch the Food Network while working out; not as a consumer, but as a cook.
And I’ve lost many an hour to gazing at food porn on the Internet. Which brings us to this week’s Girl Crush: Esraa Ammar of the food Tumblr Boyfriend Replacement. The Egypt-based Ammar reblogs stunning photos of savory and sweet dishes, with a good mix between high cuisine and accessible meals. But luckily I found my very own personal chef years ago. Happy Pi Day! If you recall anything from ninth-grade algebra, it’s that 3.14 is the simplified form of pi, or π. On March 14, 1989, physicist Larry Shaw celebrated the first-ever Pi Day with staff and visitors at the San Francisco Exploratorium, by marching around a circular area and eating — you guessed it — pies. However, Shaw has some competition in the recent movement to change 3/14 to Tau Day. Their Tau Manifesto is a pretty impassioned read, but we like pie enough that we’re gonna let it slide.

But now the network has branched out with the USA Character Approved Awards, highlighting real people in a variety of industries – fashion, theatre, art, food, design – who are bringing effective change to the world through their passions.
Crushable had the chance to speak with one of the honorees: Grant Achatz, the chef at Alinea and the winner of the 2008 James Beard Award, famous for his progressive work in molecular gastronomy. Alinea has received countless accolades for its innovative 12- or 24-course tasting menus. Achatz is also a cancer survivor, overcoming tongue cancer in 2007. More »
