3 Ways Kate Winslet Can Win That Tony to Get Her EGOT

Props to Ology for realizing that with last night’s Emmy win for Mildred Pierce, Kate Winslet is now only one step away from ~~world domination~~ an EGOT. It’s the Grand Slam of the arts world, where artists get at least one each of the four big awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.

Past EGOT winners include Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, and Whoopi Goldberg. Here are Kate’s stats:

After six Academy Award nominations, Kate finally took home the Oscar for The Reader in 2009.
Amazingly, she’s already nabbed the Grammy, which usually proves to be the most difficult for actors looking to cross over. It sort of happened through a loophole: In 2000, she won for Best Spoken Word Album for Children, for her collaboration on Listen to the Storyteller.
And of course, last night’s Emmy for Mildred Pierce.

So now Kate just needs to star in a Broadway play or musical. This shouldn’t be so difficult, since she was born into a family of thespians and got her start on the stage. Interestingly, however, the majority of her career as an adult has been in film. But we’ve come up with three completely doable projects that could get Kate her final award — or at least be a step in the right direction.

Note: Commenter Stephanie pointed out that Kate has to either originate a role or star in a revival to be eligible for a Tony. Our bad! Find our new ideas on the next page.

We’re starting to think Rihanna‘s fiery red hair is going to her, um, head. The Barbadian pop star has been the performer du jour this awards season, and every time she steps on stage it’s to a background of flames so intense we expect Kurt Russell and Billy Baldwin to leap from the audience with a 50-foot hose. Rihanna performed twice at the Grammy’s, once with Eminem and once with Drake. The first time around, she wore a flame-like dress and rocked out in front of a wall of fakey looking fire. With Drake, she stripped down and sang next to a real (or: real-looking) blaze.

Then at Tuesday’s BRIT Awards Rihanna again took the platform. Clad in very little, she sang in front of what appeared to be a trashcan bonfire or some terrible accident with the electrical wires. (The BRIT Awards also boasted a man who set himself aflame during the performance of British white boy rapper Plan B. Treachery!)

What in the heck, Rihanna? We thought we left the fire aesthetic in the early-aughts, on the stickers on our skateboard and the cover of that Red Hot Chili Peppers album. All these flames are making us want to break out our glowsticks and take a tab of ecstasy — and no good can come of that.

A die-hard Justin Bieber fan has a meltdown when his “teenager” doesn’t win a Grammy. The sad thing is, I’m afraid he’s more passionate about this than I will ever be about anything in my entire life.

This is almost good news, considering everything that’s been going on in Tiger Wood‘s life lately: he was fined for spitting on a golf course. (People)

LC just can’t take a hint: after being dropped from MTV because her reality show is too “high-brow,” Lauren Conrad‘s insisting on bringing her show to other networks. (Us Magazine)

Esperanza Spalding… Revealed!

Esperanza Spalding went from being an obscure jazz prodigy to a household name over night after she beat out Justin Bieber, Drake and Florence and the Machine to take home the Best New Artist trophy at last night’s Grammy Awards. So who is this 26-year-old bassist from Portland? Here are five things to know about Esperanza.

1. Her middle name is not, in fact, Quesadilla. Nor is it Justin. Esperanza’s Wikipedia page was pranked by angry Justin Bieber fans after last night’s win.

2. She’s the first jazz performer in Grammy history to win the Best New Artist prize. About her nomination, she said, “I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination, me being a little old jazz musician and everything.”

3. In 2009, she was selected by President Obama to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies in Oslo. She then performed at the Nobel Concert the next day.

4. She used to carry her bass two miles to the bus stop every day (uphill both ways!) as a young student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, which she attended on a full scholarship.

5. She’s working on a mainstream album called Radio Music Society, which she hopes will take the “soul and core” of jazz and turn it into something accessible to a wide audience.

So, Jennifer Lopez‘s record deal is no more (although there has been talk that she’s already signed with a new label, which she won’t name). If her recording career is truly over (we doubt it) what we’ll surely miss the most are the crazy outfits this girl likes to perform in all the time. She’s also been known to walk the red carpet in a few ridiculous get-ups, too. We get it — J likes to keep it sexy. But we’ve seen her be stylish and, dare we say, elegant at times. Still, there is plenty of photo evidence of her sartorial slip-ups over the years.
