We’re starting to worry about Jared Leto’s mental health: As Jordan Catalano has moved away from his teen dreaminess and invested more time in his band (30 Seconds to Mars…which we still need explained to us), he’s become more and more unstable.

Exhibit A, your honor: His Twitter. Exhibit B: his constantly changing hairstyles and colors, which are starting to look like some high school punk who spent too much time around bleach fumes and Manic Panic. His recent change to a blue-hue cements our opinion: Jared Leto’s gone off the deep-end.

Presented without comment, Will Smith‘s daughter Willow Smith‘s first single, “Whip My Hair.” Actually wait, one comment: Is preparation for this single what inspired the bevy of strange hairdos this summer? Doesn’t seem to be much to “whip,” there, Willow. Then again, we’re not going to be the jerks that take aim at a 9-year-old just because her single is based on pure nepotism.

Make Your Own: Fake Bangs

People tell you never to cut your own hair, and probably for a good reason. Unless you go to a liberal arts college where walking around looking like a rejected member of Green Day is going to fly, you should probably keep the scissors far, far away from your own hair. But that doesn’t mean you can’t fake choppy locks to see how you like the style. All you need is some product, some accessories, and a good excuse for why your hair will have seemed to grow out overnight.

Step 1: Buy (or make) some hair product – The best way to make your clip-on bangs look natural is to use the same oils and conditioners on both your real and fake locks. If you’re going to for the emo, choppy look, feel free to whip up a batch of the stuff yourself. This recipe comes from Long Locks and will tint your hair a nice shade of red:

Ingredients
1/2 cup beet juice
1/2 cup carrot juice

Directions
Mix ingredients together, pour over clean, damp hair. Wrap head in plastic and apply hot towel, medium dryer heat, or sit in the sun for one hour. Shampoo.

Step 2: Get your clip-on bangs – We know, it seems sillier than buying a fake nose ring. But how else are you going to try the look out without dedicating four months of your life to the style? You can buy extension bangs at any wig store or have your stylist do it (that would sort of defeat the purpose though). Or you can buy your own bangs at Ultimate Looks, where these hand-bandy things kind of hang down in front of your face:

Step 3: Or…Fake Your Own – You can fake having bangs without wearing a crazy-ass hairnet thingie by spending some extra hours following those people on YouTube for tutorials. Sure it takes awhile longer, but on the plus side your friends won’t ask you why you’re wearing a bang-weave.

It started with Breathless – the camera lingering lustily on the slender curve of Jean Seberg‘s neck below her close-cropped hair. Then Rosemary’s Baby, where all the devil infants and demonic sex in the world couldn’t take away from how freakin’ awesome Mia Farrow looked as she announced, “I’ve been to Vidal Sassoon!”

And then there was Emma Watson, who made headlines here and elsewhere this summer when she left behind her ten-year commitment to Harry-Pottering and her trademark long locks in one fell swoop.

Everywhere I looked, there it was.

The pixie cut.

Like a lot of long-haired girls, I’ve always found the prospect of a pixie both tantalizing and terrifying. Mostly terrifying. After all, there’s a lot of potential risk associated with getting a super-short cut – like the possibility of discovering too late that your head is shaped like a rhombus, or the oft-cited warnings that cutting your hair is an excellent way to make sure that no man will ever want to sleep with you again. EVER.

It was a fear so strong that in 28 years, I’d never gotten up the guts to do a serious chop. Even with the fine hair and petite features that supposedly made me an ideal candidate for pixiedom, I’d convinced myself that I just wasn’t the kind of girl who could rock short hair – that a close-cropped ‘do was the exclusive province of sensible soccer moms, or effortlessly boho French girls, or Hollywood hotties like Winona Ryder or Halle Berry, who could probably wear a mullet hairpiece made out of roadkill and still look gorgeous. I’d fallen prey to the vaguely size-queen-y notion that length mattered, that my hair represented some kind of accomplishment and was integral to my value as a person. Because sure, I was an underemployed writer who’d been laid off twice in a year, and yeah, there was intelligent mold sprouting on half the contents of my fridge – but look how long my hair was! If I tilted my head just right, I could even get full hirsute boob coverage like Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon!

Which was vitally important, obviously, because you never know when a potential employer will need you not only to fact-check and make deadlines, but also to be ready at any moment to cover your nipples without using your hands.

Remember when Friends was the hottest thing on TV, and you just desperately wanted your hair to look like Jennifer Aniston’s? If the ’90s meant hairstylists across the country were busy recreating “The Rachel,” in the 2010s (I still don’t remember what we’re calling this decade), we’ve got “The Bieber.” Like the Biebs himself, the ‘do is pure — it doesn’t require any product.

We wonder if any girls have adopted “The Bieber” — it might look cute!

People Who Want To Wear Mullets Ironically Have To Leave Iran

Iran might be known for its strict rules about how its citizens dress, but at least they are standing up against the most unholy of hairstyles: the mullet. Newly released guidelines have banned the hick-tastic look, along with elaborate spikes and ponytails (we’re not quite as on board with that one), while Elvis-like poufs and side parts are alright by them.

Still, the business in the front, party in the back look remains the hairstyle of choice for many Americans. Just ask the Pittsburgh Zoo, which offered a $5 discount on admission to anyone sporting the look on Monday, although they joked that the hairstyle was an endangered species. Not likely!

If you’re like me, reading about how to do your hair/put on makeup is pointless, even if I am reading a book with picture instructions (sorry, we’re talking pre-Internet middle school years here). That’s why it’s great YouTube was invented, because there are tons of young women – and some dudes – who are more than happy to create hair, makeup, and fashion tutorials so you can actually watch someone make a french braid and not have to figure it out with some complicated stereo instructions kit. Then again, YouTube is also great for when you are trying to find one of these videos (say: How to flatten your Jew-fro when it’s super humid out), and end up with this instead:
