Miley Cyrus’ week wasn’t tough in quite the same way that, say, Scarlet Johansson’s was last week, but it was still pretty tough. When you’ve gotten into trouble about releasing unintentionally sexy things before, and suddenly you’re accused of it again, even though you haven’t actually DONE anything this time? Sort of sucks. So here, Miley. Have a drinking game. You’re 18, though, so make sure you play it with apple cider.

It’s November 23, 1992: Champagne and cigars for baby Miley!
Oh wait, that’s not her real name?:
Sorry. Let’s try that again. It’s November 23, 1992: Champagne and cigars for baby Destiny Hope!

After completing three months at a rehab facility to treat her cutting issues and eating disorder last year, Disney starlet Demi Lovato has announced that she is leaving her show, Sonny with a Chance. “I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery,” she said in a recent interview. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.”

Instead, Lovato will focus on her music, especially since she first realized the extent of her troubles when she had to drop out of a Jonas Brothers tour last summer. Disney reps released a statement saying that they support her decision. Because Sonny with a Chance was built around Lovato’s Sonny and other characters performing on a fictional sketch show called So Random!, the studio has a safety net: The next season will be written based on the sketch show itself. (Think TGS without the frame of 30 Rock.)

The new generation of young actresses seem to all get their start on television shows built around their brand. And in many cases, those partnerships end badly when the young Disney or Nickelodeon lady decides she’s done with her squeaky-clean image. Here are the major examples from the last few years, split by network.

Maybe it’s the pristine image that Disney pushes of its girls that make these partings seem that much more bitter:

Hannah Montana ended without much fanfare, but in a way that seemed to do honor to the story: Miley Cyrus‘ character revealed her true identity, with the last few episodes devoted to the fallout of her decision. In the end, Miley’s friends go to college without her and she goes on to pursue a movie career. (Meta much?)
At the time that Hilary Duff‘s show Lizzie McGuire was on the airwaves, Disney’s policy was that series end after 65 episodes. There’s a series finale leading into The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but it got aired out of order, so that the technical “last” episode is just a standalone. Disney wanted to send Lizzie and co. to high school in an ABC spin-off, but the deal fell apart due to Duff’s reps claiming she wasn’t being paid enough.
Selena Gomez — Lovato’s on-screen bff in Princess Protection Program — is still starring on Wizards of Waverly Place, plus the sequel to the Wizards movie.

For the most part, Nickelodeon shows seem to have a smoother transition with their leading ladies:

Emma Roberts, who was already an endearing preteen in Unfabulous, continues to win at life with her appearances in the indie Lymelife and the more mainstream Scream 4. It’s not clear if Unfabulous‘ series finale were planned; it seems that the last few episodes were cobbled together as a made-for-TV movie, with some semblance of concluding the storylines.
Arguably the most normal of the bunch, Charlotte Arnold parlayed the success of her offbeat show Naturally, Sadie into her current role as Holly J on Degrassi. By the time the series finale rolls around, she has to decide whether or not to go on a safari in Africa, and she gets her guy.
Miranda Cosgrove has actually put off college — she got into NYU and USC — to continue filming iCarly.
That said, every family needs a black sheep. Jamie Lynn Spears shocked viewers and their parents alike when she announced in 2007 that she was pregnant at the age of 16. (This was a few years before MTV would strike ratings gold with 16 & Pregnant.) Her show Zoey 101 managed to complete a fourth season, but the series finale sounds like it was incredibly shaky, with no real conclusion to the series.

So there you have it. Part of growing up for young actresses these days is leaving the shows that made them famous. Whether or not it’s a clean break is part of how we regard them in their future projects.

Attention, America: Billy Ray Cyrus has called off the divorce, People reports. He told The View, “I want to put my family back together … Things are the best they’ve ever been…I feel like I got my Miley back in a way… I feel like we are the daddy and daughter that we were before Hannah Montana happened.”

I smell a reality show. Can you guys see Billy Ray and his wife, Tish Cyrus, getting back together? Let’s examine the evidence:

In October, Billy and Tish announced their plans to divorce. They had been married for 17 years. (Sad. We all wondered why they were getting divorced.)
Rumors quickly spread that Tish had been having an affair with Bret Michaels. (That would be 0 for 2 in Tish’s choice of lovers.)
Shortly after the announcement, a video was leaked of Miley Cyrus smoking salvia out of a bong. She was strongly criticized for it. (Oh, come on. You were probably smoking something stronger than that in high school).
Billy announced that he was extremely disappointed in his daughter. This angered Miley. (Here I’ll make one of the thousands of “She’s just being Miley” jokes. Was it good for you?)
Billy gave an interview to GQ, in which he claimed that the show Hannah Montana ruined his family. (As a fellow Hannah, I was similarly miffed by Billy’s comments about Hannah Montana. What is it exactly that you dislike about us, Bill?!)

Dear Billy Ray Cyrus: It’s Too Late To Regret ‘Hannah Montana’

Billy Ray Cyrus is mourning the loss of his little girl’s innocence all over the Internet today, saying that if he could, he’d go back in time and stop Hannah Montana from happening. He blames Miley‘s handlers for her current wildchild behavior (see: Salvia video, dating older dudes, etc.), and claims he was left out of the loop for much of the time she spent on the show. About skipping Miley’s 18th birthday party, held at the LA bar Trousdale, Billy Ray said:

“You know why I didn’t go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up . . . all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, ‘Daddy endorsed this stuff.’ I started realizing I’m being used.”

Guess what, Billy Ray? You’re the girl’s father. If you didn’t want her to have her birthday party at a bar you could have told her not to have her birthday party at a bar! It sounds like Billy relinquished the rearing of his child to Disney’s authority and then found himself surprised when she didn’t turn out to be the woman he would have liked.

So, Billy Ray, what can you do now that the Hannah ship has sailed and Miley’s become the person she’s going to be? Don’t make the same mistake with your other daughter. Little Noah Cyrus, just ten, is already following in Miley’s footsteps. She’s an actress who’s appeared in movies like Ponyo and Mostly Ghost, and has done modeling stints, showing up in a campaign for a line of weirdo kiddie French maid outfits.

So tell her to knock it off, Billy! Give your other daughter a chance at a normal life — or you’ll be back on Page 6 five years from now, lamenting the loss of another daughter. Hmmph!

Interview: Michael Blaiklock, Co-Creator And Co-Star Of ‘Minor Stars,’ Our New Favorite Web Series

Last week, we brought you the first episode of Minor Stars, the satirical web series that takes us behind the scenes of a Hannah Montana-style kids’ show called Abby Everything. The second installment hit the Internet today, and we spoke to show co-creator Michael Blaiklock — who also plays the character Robbie — about writing comedy and dressing like a Disney star.

Your show’s super funny! Can you talk a little about its origin and making?
This is an idea we (Sorry, Dad Productions, which is Justin Becker, Dave Horwitz, Elisha Yaffe, and myself) had a while back. We had the privilege of working on a pilot for TBS a couple years ago, and this was one of the premises that was kicked around. Obviously it didn’t end up being the pilot, but it was an idea we always gravitated back to whenever we were thinking of doing a new project. It was a world that we thought would be interesting to explore, and that no one had yet. And it seemed to lend itself to this web format pretty well. As far as making it, we had the most talented and awesome group of friends working in front of and behind the camera to help us make this show as super funny as you said it is!

How old is your character Robbie supposed to be?
Robbie is supposed to be in his mid 20′s, even though he plays a teenager on Abby Everything. As is the case with a lot of Hollywood casting, young-looking twenty somethings have to (get to?) play teenagers to avoid those pesky child labor laws.

The Abby Everything wardrobe is simply inspired (sparkles, keffiyahs). You all totally wear that stuff in real life, don’t you?
I will admit now that a lot of that was our real clothes from our real closets. My only hope is that it will catch on, and we will be hailed as trendsetters for creating the “dress like you’re on a Disney show ironically” craze.

Fuck, Kill, Marry: Miley, Selena, Miranda?
FUCK: None of them. I wouldn’t last a day in the slammer.
MARRY: All of them. Big Love style.
KILL: Miley. We can live without her.

What can we expect from the 3rd ep of Minor Stars?
A big awards show, a major melt-down, a gooey blue substance, and lots of laughs! New eps every Monday, y’all!

Why is anyone surprised Miley Cyrus‘s new music video is ultra sexy? It’s not like the 17-year-old is going to regress back to singing the ABCs in her pajamas (and if she did we’d sure that would stir up a totally different form of controversy). Miley’s latest offering is set to her new song “Who Owns My Heart,” and it’s most definitely not about a BFF necklace.

The video features a tarted-up Miley parading around in her underwear on her way to da club. Once she’s at da club, we see Hannah Montana engaged in some some sultry girl-on-girl dancing. Yikes! Personally, we’re more offended by the lyric “Who owns my heart?/Is it love or is it art?” but that might just be us.
