The Today show looked at 10 foods that are supposed to be “healthy” for us but really aren’t. While the label might send a certain message, all might not be as it seems. Here are the potential offenders:

Multigrain bread – don’t be fooled by the name. Always look for something that says 100% whole grain or whole wheat. Enriched flour might be something you want to avoid.

Reduced-fat peanut butter – regular peanut butter is possibly better because it’s heart healthy fats and the reduced-fat has more sugar.

Energy bars – read the labels because some of those bars contain more than 400 calories. Making your own trail mix is a better alternative.

Processed turkey – the sodium can be extremely high on deli meat.

Bran muffins – watch the portions! Some of those giant muffins can be very high in calories!

For more tips, watch the video below!

Are you trying to watch your waistline but find it hard to give up your favorite foods? If so, you’re not alone. Fortunately, the Today show looked at some options for taking fat and calories off without losing the flavor.

Host Meredith Vieira wanted to try to make a more health-conscious version of her favorite lasagne. As the expert pointed out, this dish has a lot of hidden fat, particularly in the dairy products. Her suggestion was to replace some of the ingredients with reduced fat versions but not non-fat ones. She maintained that non-fat dairy products had no taste and didn’t cook well.

There were several other good suggestions for making some favorite foods a little healthier (including cookies!). Check out the segment:

Missy Chase Lapine has come up with 101 new recipes and sneaky tricks for creating healthy food that kids will love which she shares in her book The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue.

I cannot even believe some of the things Lapine has come up with. She has a green-and-red striped smoothie (perfect for Christmas morning!) that is made with avocado and strawberries while she creates “Brainy Brownies” with pureed spinach and blueberries.

What a great idea! Watch the segment here:
