Franz Nicolay Leaves The Hold Steady
Franz Nicolay, the keyboardist for quintessential New York band The Hold Steady is leaving the group, he announced on his website (thanks Pitchfork). He has been with the band for five years, since their breakout hit record Separation Sunday. Nicolay will be plenty busy though. Virgin Mobile Fest is Free This Year
Although not in New York, the Virgin Mobile Fest in Maryland is only a few hours away. And this year it’s free! Taking place on August 30, 2009, the festival will be at Merriweather Post Pavilion, one of my favorite venues anywhere (and also the namesake of Animal Collective’s last album). Regular free tickets are gone, but you can get free VIP tickets by volunteering. Find out how here. And here is the lineup:

Celebrate Brooklyn, MoMA show, and More Tonight
Usually Monday is that blah day that you hate. But for some reason tonight (Monday June 8) is packed with awesome music-related activities. So cheer up and gear up to go out tonight! Here are your awesome choices:
