All through college, whenever the holidays approached I would ask my parents for cash. I didn’t want to ask for anything too fancy, because as far as I was concerned, helping me pay my rent and tuition was gift enough. And the truth is, I wasn’t worried about the fact that I slept on a crappy futon, had used the hell out of my generic desktop computer, didn’t have a matching set of plates, and had been wearing the same glasses since high school. I figured that eventually, all of these things would get upgraded. I just never figured out when. More »

Happy 11/11/11, everyone! Are you having as exciting a time as I am with these crazypants numbers? More »

For me, the time period between now and about, oh, I’d say 2012 is usually filled with a crazed schedule, lots of un-fun “budget” problems, family drama, and better access to cookie platters than kale salads. Which leads to stress, erratic eating, missed workouts, bad sleep, and a compromised immune system (hi, cold & flu season: it’s me again). And yoga—one of the few things that counteracts the toll of the holidays on my body—often seems like one more (stressful) think to add to my too-long to-do list. Which is why I’m not just happy that Blisstree is partnering with Eoin Finn‘s Blissology Project because we get to offer you 30 days of yoga for $10; I’m happy because it might just get me through Thanksgiving stress, too.
The $10 pass gets you access to an online video library of yoga classes led by Eoin Finn: yoga teacher, TED talker, and founder of the Blissology project, whose happiness and calm is contagious (even through streaming video). You also get access to the Blissology Project Booklet, which outlines Eoin’s mission as well as the principles of his 30-day “Commit to Bliss” program: This is the part that might get me (and you) through Thanksgiving. You can credit the Harold & Kumar stoner comedies with rejuvenating Neil Patrick Harris‘ career: In 2004′s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Harris played a fictionalized version of himself as a drug-addled playboy. Audiences loved seeing the guy they knew as cute Doogie Howser hilariously spiraling out of control. The next year, he introduced us to Barney Stinson (very much the same character, minus the drug habit) in How I Met Your Mother. His part in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) was even bigger: ‘Shrooms, branding hookers, and getting shot dead.
He could’ve let it go there and walked away from a franchise that helped establish him as a comic actor. More »
Ah, Independence Day: The day on which we burn food items to a crisp, dress in only three colors, and set fire to a bunch of explosives, all in the name of celebrating the day a bunch of long-dead dudes signed a piece of very important paper. Incidentally, it’s also the day on which, in 1996, aliens descended upon the Earth and attempted to destroy it. Happily, they failed, thanks to the ingenuity of a few resourceful humans; and now we can use the day to celebrate not one, but two forms of independence. Hoorah!
I was 11 when Independence Day came out, and as you might imagine, I was a rather impressionable child. It seemed to me that there was more to take away from this Hollywood blockbuster than simple entertainment. I studied it carefully, and under its tutelage, I discovered a number of valuable lessons about the true meaning of this national holiday. In honor of 4th of July weekend, I have decided to share my findings with you, Gentle Readers; here are the 10 things Independence Day taught me about Independence Day: More »
Happy 4th of July weekend, everybody! Sure, you could celebrate by dressing up in a snazzy red, white, and blue outfit; but why not get a little creative about it and dress up your hair instead? Take a cue from these 12 celebs and their colorful patriotic ‘dos:
