Since Demi pulled out of a Jonas Brothers concert tour in 2010 citing exhaustion and personal issues, the main rumor that’s dogged her is an alleged cocaine addiction. In late 2010, RadarOnline claimed that there was a video of Demi snorting coke — following allegations from a fellow partier that she did it “like a pro” — but to the best of our knowledge, no video ever actually surfaced. Regardless, the mental association has stuck: A former child star posted a Reddit AMA a few months back where she claimed that Disney tried to distract from Demi’s coke problem; even though the poster was anonymous, everyone believed her.

The MuchMusic interviewer goes by the same assumptions that we’ve all had, mentioning “cross addictions” and asking if Demi’s drug and alcohol problems led to rehab. What’s strange is that while Demi reiterates that she sought treatment for emotional problems only, she never actually denies having problems with drugs and alcohol:

“It actually wasn’t a part of the diagnosis of why I was in rehab. I was there for — pull up the list — bipolar disorder, anorexia, binge-and-purge, cutting, depression, and trauma—post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s no secret that I’ve come out and talked about experimenting with drugs and alcohol, but I also self-medicated a lot as a teenager. It’s hard not to, especially when you’re growing up in Hollywood and you’re around everything you want. It sounds silly, not that this is rebellious at all, but I was going to Disneyland whenever I wanted to. Being in a city where your’e never told no, it’s really difficult not to be in a place where you don’t fall into the temptation.”

This sound bite hits a lot of the same points that Demi did a year ago, when she was discharged from rehab and did the media circuit. The keywords that have remained? Self-medicating, purging, “drinking and drugs,” “numbing the pain.” As far as I know, she hasn’t yet named those specific drugs. You would think that as an internet-savvy teenager, she would have seen the cocaine rumors and rushed to deny those if they were untrue.

However, the 19-year-old was pretty candid when talking about how all of her drinking — especially partying hard during the manic episodes of her recently-diagnosed manic-depression — has been underage: “I really didn’t care about the law at that point. I was trying to numb my pain, and that’s all that mattered.”

Something still rubs me the wrong way about them not referencing the BlindGossip fiasco at all. I’d call bullshit on the “recent” timing, but Demi’s red hair seems to match these photos from a Seventeen magazine event in early January 2012. The fact that a popular gossip site called her out directly would have been a fascinating angle to cover; it’s disappointing that no one addressed that.

Vanity Fair has released its annual Hollywood Issue, but the makeup artist went way overboard on the smoky eyes and red lips. The eleven young actresses all look beautiful, but they also look interchangeable. Really, it’s impossible to identify more than one or two of them without scrutinizing it really closely. (Click to enlarge.)

I’m gonna tell you who’s in each panel, and I bet it’ll surprise you. Left panel: Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska, and Jessica Chastain—these ladies are all mostly recognizable since two are Oscar-nominated, but I was sure that Mia was actually Amber Heard.

Middle panel: Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, and Shailene Woodley. You would never have realized that was the tiny Descendants/Secret Life of the American Teenager star, right? Maybe it’s her head tilted almost ninety degrees, but the look just overwhelms her.

Right panel: Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins, and Brit Marling. Honestly, Felicity and Lily look almost identical, and I was sure that Brit — who I’ve interviewed in person and who comes across as very down-to-earth — was Castle‘s Stana Katic.

The behind-the-scenes video is fun to watch, but it doesn’t shed any more light on who’s who. If anything, you get a clearer view of how caked in makeup these women are. And don’t let this sound overwhelmingly negative: I love the pastels and Old Hollywood look. It’s just bizarre when you can’t even pick out which celebrities are on the cover. I much preferred the 2011 Hollywood Issue, which posed its male and female subjects in a bar and made them, you know, look like themselves.

Like, you wouldn’t even question that that’s Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, and others in front of you.

The official Hunger Games fan wiki outlines to what outrageous lengths Capitol residents will go for what they believe is beauty:

• dyeing their bodies, wearing bright wigs, and even getting plastic surgery
• various objects embedded into their skin: gems, whiskers, talons, tattoos
• drinking a liquid like ipecac at parties in order to vomit up the rich Capitol food and eat more of it

Because we cover celebrity news and lifestyle, we’ve unfortunately had plenty of opportunities to observe plastic surgery turning stars from prettier versions of themselves into warped, alien-like creatures. Just take Tara Reid, who’s become an object of ridicule for her puckered stomach, or the much more tragic case of Ali Lohan altering the structure of her face and still receiving an overwhelmingly negative response. Just like in The Hunger Games, in Hollywood there’s a disconnect between what sounds beautiful and what’s actually beautiful.

We’re expecting Elizabeth as Effie to go through a number of costume changes, including her wigs. The hairpiece, she says, was what cemented the character for her. “Every day I would have that aha moment,” she told People, “like, ‘We did it! We found Effie!’”

Elizabeth did acknowledge that Capitol fashion requires for her to wear some killer heels: “For sure the biggest challenge of playing Effie was the shoes! All of my shoes in the movie are completely amazing but highly uncomfortable. I said to [director Gary Ross], ‘You better be shooting these shoes, because they’re killing me.’”

“Occupy Hollywood is an assistant-powered movement that will begin atop the second “L” of the Hollywood Sign on Saturday or whenever we can’t get a table at Spago. Occupy Hollywood is fighting back against the corrosive powers of major celebrities who make millions of dollars just by tweeting about salads while we behind-the-scenes folks make entire thousands of dollars less by doing real work for at least half the day in our studio lot offices. The movement is inspired by the popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, because we own the story rights to those. Occupy Hollywood aims to expose how the most frivolous 1% are writing the rules of an unfair entertainment industry economy – movie sales are down while endorsement deals are up, and we think that’s wrong.

Occupy Hollywood is a horizontally organized and in-3D resistance movement employing the revolutionary tactics of the Arab Summer (we couldn’t get the rights to the Arab Spring this time) to restore equity in Hollywood. Down with Kim Kardashian! Up with Harvey Weinstein! Let’s get back to spending our dollars blowing up trucks and building Transformers instead of paying Lindsay Lohan to attend parties.

We call ourselves the Hollywood General Assembly (George Clooney came up with that) and we have employed Central Casting to find people of all colors, genders and beliefs to attend our daily assemblies. - Adopt an Occupy Hollywooder’s adopted child. Someone still has to pick up these industry professionals’ kids from their country day schools, and the housekeeper’s busy printing up flyers and creating viral videos for the cause.

Now Warner Bros. has picked up “Rome, Sweet Rome” to become a feature film. This all started a month ago.

In-between these two developments, James (posting under the username Prufrock451) continued to post installments of his story, which were met with excitement and rewarded with Reddit gold… then the story was moved over to its own subreddit page, r/RomeSweetRome, where Redditors discussed alternate history and made memes related to the story… then the page started to languish and didn’t get updated as often.

And now this! What’s so sweet is that James was genuinely bowled over by his story’s success when it was just a series of posts on Reddit. About a month ago, he apologetically told Reddit that he would have to put the story on hiatus because “I am at a desk job, and I have freelance stuff to wrap up tonight. As giddy as I am right now on your Internet-love, I have to get back to my real-world responsibilities.” Looks like that won’t be a problem for the foreseeable future!

Surprisingly, the original poster The_Quiet_Earth says that he doesn’t expect any financial compensation for coming up with the idea, because he was just “asking a question that is commonly fantasized about by many people.” (Though we’re hoping WB at least gives him a shout-out in the credits.)

According to the Variety article that broke the news, in order to return home the Marines have to set history back to the way it was, seeing as their time travel was what altered things. Not everyone is happy about this; one Redditor complained that the ending is now way too stereotypically Hollywood.

ScreenRant got an interview with James about his whirlwind success; in his responses, he strikes a nice balance between humble but confident:

I was very, very lucky to post what I did at the moment I did. It wasn’t just the idea of coming up with just the right answer – if I’d posted the same text an hour later, everyone would already be bored with the question. They wouldn’t have seen it and it wouldn’t have blown up. So that was definitely a lightning-in-a-bottle situation.

On the other hand, I’m not a fresh-faced young kid hitting it out of the park the day after landing on the LA tarmac. I’m a 37-year-old who’s been writing nonfiction (encyclopedias, reviews, software documentation) for a decade.

His advice for other writers:

First, when you see an opportunity to write about something you love, take it. Second, when you don’t, write anyway.

Who knows—it might get its own subreddit, and Hollywood might see it!

Can Kevin McKidd reprise his role on Rome to play one of the gladiators? Or a Marine! Grey’s Anatomy (sort of) prepared him for that.

I’ve remarked before about how a well-done reboot can be fun, re: we already know where everything is going, so now we get to see how we got there in the first place. The best reboots and remakes usually come from stories that transcend the ages—Batman, Star Trek, X-Men, even Planet of the Apes (though I still think that last trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes gave away waaaaay too much). But even so, there comes a point where enough is enough. Clue does not need to be remade. Neither does Short Circuit. These are fine films in their own right; they’re also very much products of the ‘80s, which is part of what makes them work so well. They’re goofy in a very ‘80s sense, and I’m not convinced that making them again in the new millennium will add anything to them.

But here’s the bigger problem: What seems like the majority of films coming out of Hollywood these days are ALL remakes or reboots. Consider the following recent or upcoming films:

• Fright Night: Remake.

• Footloose: Remake.

• The Evil Dead: Reboot in development.

• Conan the Barbarian: Reboot.

• The Amazing Spider-Man: Reboot.

• Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Reboot in development.

• Boatloads of recent horror films (Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, yadda yadda yadda): Reboots and remakes.

And this is just tiny, tiny sampling of what’s going on. Everyone’s favorite procrastination tool, Wikipedia, has pretty extensive lists of films that have been remade and rebooted, so if you really want to see what the damage is, check them out. It’s not pretty.

I realize that sometimes it can be tough coming up with original stories. I realize that a lot of film executives would rather go for an old story that they know ha already sold than take a chance on a new, previously untold story. But seriously: STOP STEALING EXISTING STORIES AND COME UP WITH SOME OF YOUR OWN. Relying so heavily on rehashes of the same old tales is LAZY. You are BETTER THAN THAT. Reboots are best reserved for when specific franchises get so bogged down in their own bullshit or have otherwise gone so far off the rails that the only way to set things to rights is to start over. They should not be relied on as the sole source of all storytelling. I love being excited about upcoming films that aren’t things I’ve already seen before– movies like Super 8 come to mind. I’m tired of seeing the same old thing. Consider this a wake-up call, Hollywood. Now get off your duffs and make something original. Your audience will thank you.

You probably knew being a child star was majorly effed up. But did you know Hollywood was literally crawling with pedophiles? It’s true, according to someone who would know: former child star Corey Feldman.

“I can tell you that the number one problem in Hollywood was, is, and always will be pedophilia,” he told ABC’s Nightline for their titillatingly named special Underage and Famous. “It’s all done under the radar. It’s the big secret. I was surrounded by them when I was 14 years old. Surrounded. Literally. Didn’t even know it. It wasn’t until I was old enough to realize what they were and what they wanted and what they were about that I went ‘oh my god, they were like vultures.’”

As amusing as it might be to think of Corey Feldman surrounded by a multitude of grown men driven wild by his animal magnetism, this is a pretty serious claim. That quote makes it sound like he wasn’t actually molested, only menaced, but he later talks about how both him and Corey Haim were victims of sexual abuse, and how Corey Haim’s ultimately fatal drug problem was the result:

There’s one person to blame in the death of Corey Haim, and that person happens to be a Hollywood mogul. And that person needs to be exposed but unfortunately, I can’t be the one to do it.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but why can’t Corey Feldman be the one to do it? He seems pretty ideally situated to me. He’s not really in the industry anymore, and if I believed someone had molested my friend, ultimately leading to his death, you can bet I’d be putting up flyers with his face on them all over the place.

Anyway, they asked Corey Haim’s mom what she thought of all this, and she was understandably not too excited to talk about it. “I’m not wiling to discuss or respond to anything Corey Feldman has to say,” she said in an email. “I wish he would talk about himself only, and leave my son out of it.”

Will Corey Feldman blow the lid off this “pedophiles run Hollywood” story? Or do his cryptic statements imply he already has another whistle blower in mind? I wonder what Macaulay Culkin thinks of all this?

It’s a well-known fact in Hollywood that nipples are magic. You can show the whole rest of your boob and everything’s fine, but as soon as a hint of the pointy center part shows, you are one of “those” actresses. You know, actresses like Helen Mirren, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman…total C-listers!

Olivia Wilde declined to show her nipples for her role in The Change-Up, instead wearing pasties in her sex scene with Ryan Reynolds. However, when editing the final cut, producers saw that Reynolds hadn’t covered Olivia’s boobs with his body like he was supposed to, and the pasties were showing. Naturally, they decided to paint some nipples in with CGI, and let Wilde choose which ones.

“I got to approve the nipples!” she told WENN. “They sent me an email saying, ‘Please review nipple cover shot one through seven and decide which one is most like the original.’ I don’t know what he (producer) was using as source material… but I think it’s pretty close.”

This is amusing, but also sort of strange, considering Wilde showed her nipples in 2006′s Alpha Dog. Here she is getting naked with, and subsequently criticizing the penis of, Emile Hirsch (NSFW, duh). She’s made it pretty clear she’s not shy about her crazy nice body. So why the sudden change of heart?

Maybe The Change-Up couldn’t afford the rising cost of Wilde nipple. Maybe she’s had a modesty awakening since then that applies only to her nipples. Or maybe she was advised by her agents that if a Hollywood actress wants to be taken seriously, she can’t show nip until she’s like, about to win an Oscar. You see, actresses like Marisa Tomei and Maggie Gyllenhaal are in no danger of having people think their only value lies in their nips, so they can show them (or not) as much as they please. It simply isn’t an issue. A newcomer like Wilde, on the other hand, might be advised to keep them covered until she’s more established. Especially if the movie she’s in isn’t really classy enough to justify it.

Is showing CGI nipples really that different from just showing your real ones? Do these rules make any sense at all? Not really. But for the sake of both Wilde’s career and nipple enthusiasts everywhere, I hope she lands a great, complex role in some Oscar-bait magnum opus soon.

I knew even before clicking that I wasn’t going to be won over by this single. How could any of us, after the accidental fame of “Friday”? Everything that made that video a hit has been scrubbed away: Her voice has been entirely smoothed out; the lyrics actually make sense; the message is now directed at haters instead of just being about the joy of the weekend.

Oh, and the jean jacket from the single cover is omnipresent, which is what makes me think this isn’t a fake or a stunt. You would’ve thought she would’ve upped the outfits for her first really professional video, but she was more dolled up for her Good Morning America interview. For all of her imperfections — not least of all agreeing to make the “Friday” vanity video — Rebecca Black as we met her seemed real; at this point, The Man’s gotten a hold of her and has made her generic.

The one amazing part is when Rebecca plays the invisible drums around 1:20. There’s the personality we’re missing!
