Jason Segel has The Muppets, Neil Patrick Harris has hosting things, and Josh Radnor has this. Let him have this, guys. More »
In its seventh season, How I Met Your Mother is wearing thin in places — like the fact that we still haven’t met Ted’s titular wife — and some of the characters’ nuance has broken down along the way. The biggest victim has been Cobie Smulders‘ scotch-loving, proud Canadian Robin Scherbatsky. In her worst moments, she was reduced to a romantic playing stuck between Ted (Josh Radnor) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris)—or now, Barney and Kevin (Kal Penn).
But last night’s episode, “Symphony of Illumination,” brought Robin back and made us love her fiercely again. How? By dangling her worst nightmare, becoming pregnant, in front of her and then taking it away. More »
Holding a nontraditional Thanksgiving means that you get to watch whatever you want while the turkey is cooking, not to mention later when you’re in a tryptophan coma. And if the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade just doesn’t do it for you, then check out some of these classic Thanksgiving episodes from shows like How I Met Your Mother, Friends, and Gilmore Girls! We need to talk about Kevin.
Not the creepy shooter that Ezra Miller plays — though that movie looks scary as hell — but Kal Penn‘s character on How I Met Your Mother. While we were initially excited to see the Harold & Kumar star pop up on the usually witty sitcom, Kevin has become such a drag that he makes Ted look bearable! More »
The Halloween episode—a mainstay in many TV shows, a way to settle into the fall season but still serve up some pretty wacky plotlines. And because you’ve got a professional wardrobe department, the costumes are always ten times better than what you could have picked out at Halloween Adventure. (Unless the joke is that they’re shitty, in which case it’s hilarious.) We’ve got the best costumes from Gossip Girl, The OC, How I Met Your Mother, and others. More »
Is anyone else slightly disappointed now that we know what How I Met Your Mother‘s Slutty Pumpkin (played by Katie Holmes) looks like? Since HIMYM‘s first season, all Ted (Josh Radnor) could tell us about SP was that her costume had “strategically carved holes”; this looks like what you’d find in any Halloween store. More »
Bones could’ve gone the How I Met Your Mother route of hiding Emily Deschanel‘s pregnancy, but they decided on unsubtle—starting with the season 7 promo poster. More »
Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence is a big fan of cross-promotion: Last season, the Community character Abed (Danny Pudi) popped up in the background of a Cougar episode; and when Scrubs was still on the air, Bill let star Sarah Chalke play a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother.
Now, the entire Cougar Town cast is doing a mass exodus of cross-promotion all over TV this fall. More »
Last season, How I Met Your Mother‘s guest stars were pretty hit-or-miss: John Lithgow was aces as Barney’s dad, but Katy Perry‘s part could’ve been done by anyone. But we’re so psyched about the latest person to join the cast: Katie Holmes, playing Ted’s elusive crush, the Slutty Pumpkin, who we heard about (but never saw) back in season 1. More »
While perusing the IMDb boards recently, I came across a fascinating theory on How I Met Your Mother‘s FAQ page: For the three times that Carter Bays and Craig Thomas thought that HIMYM might get cancelled, they wrote in back-up plans to reveal The Mother as three different women. More »
We’re not sure who was more excited — Neil to be honored, or the fan on whose face he drew a handlebar mustache. More »
The Emmys have kind of popped up at us, but here’s the strange part: What’s most captivated us is not the nominees, but who got overlooked. More »
This makes us wish we lived in LA: Next Thursday Neil Patrick Harris will be honored with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with buddies Jason Segel and Joss Whedon as the guest speakers! More »
Two years ago, Kal Penn abruptly left his regular role on House to work for President Obama in the White House. We’re talking really abrupt — the only way the producers could permanently get rid of his character Kutner was to make the doctor commit suicide even though he’d exhibited no signs of depression. But when the President calls, what else can you do?
However, How I Met Your Mother apparently has more sway than state affairs, because Penn’s back into acting, and his first gig is a recurring role on the sitcom. More »
Last week, we brought you the hilarity that is “Trolling Saruman,” a glorious mashup of The Lord of the Rings and the infamous Trololo meme. And you know what? It occurs to us that lots of other pop culture fixtures could benefit from the Trololo treatment. Any readers out there handy with video editing want to get on these? More »
If modern product placement isn’t bad enough, for the past few years networks have been getting extra money by digitally inserting new products into old reruns — in many cases, episodes set before the product was even invented! Consumerist spotted an especially egregious one: In this How I Met Your Mother repeat, behind Robin you can see a stack of books and a magazine with an ad for Kevin James‘ new comedy Zookeeper. There aren’t even any books in the original shot!
This kind of retroactive product placement feels creepily invasive, because it’s not as if the creators or stars of the shows ever had any say in what was getting advertised. More »
It’s Canada Day! We’d like to take this opportunity to pay homage to some of our favorite fictional Canucks, who make us laugh when they fart in each others’ faces and smile when they sing about the mall. More »
In a possible recasting decision, Martin Short is replacing Dave Foley as Marshall’s (Jason Segel) new boss on season 7 of How I Met Your Mother. In May’s finale, Marshall stumbled his way through an interview at a prestigious law firm, trying to impress Foley’s character even though he knew he was seconds away from blowing chunks.
But from this behind-the-scenes news, it sounds like Marshall got the job anyway. More »
The circumstances surrounding Conan O’Brien‘s upcoming cameo on How I Met Your Mother are aww-worthy: At a celebrity auction, he outbid everyone (including himself) for the prize of a walk-on role. Because the money went to playwrights (what I do when I’m not writing for Crushable), I can’t fault him for such a generous gesture. But the prize itself is wasted on him; it should go to a genuine fan of the show. More »
While rewatching How I Met Your Mother episodes with my boyfriend, I kept getting tripped up when I would see the name Jonathan Groff credited for writing certain episodes (“I’m Not That Guy”, “Everything Must Go”, “The Possimpible”). Surely the same kid who plays Jesse St. James on Glee couldn’t also be working in the HIMYM writers’ room? Turns out it’s a mistake — but IMDb doesn’t know the difference. More »
