This makes us wish we lived in LA: Next Thursday Neil Patrick Harris will be honored with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with buddies Jason Segel and Joss Whedon as the guest speakers! More »
Two years ago, Kal Penn abruptly left his regular role on House to work for President Obama in the White House. We’re talking really abrupt — the only way the producers could permanently get rid of his character Kutner was to make the doctor commit suicide even though he’d exhibited no signs of depression. But when the President calls, what else can you do?
However, How I Met Your Mother apparently has more sway than state affairs, because Penn’s back into acting, and his first gig is a recurring role on the sitcom. More »
Last week, we brought you the hilarity that is “Trolling Saruman,” a glorious mashup of The Lord of the Rings and the infamous Trololo meme. And you know what? It occurs to us that lots of other pop culture fixtures could benefit from the Trololo treatment. Any readers out there handy with video editing want to get on these? More »
If modern product placement isn’t bad enough, for the past few years networks have been getting extra money by digitally inserting new products into old reruns — in many cases, episodes set before the product was even invented! Consumerist spotted an especially egregious one: In this How I Met Your Mother repeat, behind Robin you can see a stack of books and a magazine with an ad for Kevin James‘ new comedy Zookeeper. There aren’t even any books in the original shot!
This kind of retroactive product placement feels creepily invasive, because it’s not as if the creators or stars of the shows ever had any say in what was getting advertised. More »
It’s Canada Day! We’d like to take this opportunity to pay homage to some of our favorite fictional Canucks, who make us laugh when they fart in each others’ faces and smile when they sing about the mall. More »
In a possible recasting decision, Martin Short is replacing Dave Foley as Marshall’s (Jason Segel) new boss on season 7 of How I Met Your Mother. In May’s finale, Marshall stumbled his way through an interview at a prestigious law firm, trying to impress Foley’s character even though he knew he was seconds away from blowing chunks.
But from this behind-the-scenes news, it sounds like Marshall got the job anyway. More »
The circumstances surrounding Conan O’Brien‘s upcoming cameo on How I Met Your Mother are aww-worthy: At a celebrity auction, he outbid everyone (including himself) for the prize of a walk-on role. Because the money went to playwrights (what I do when I’m not writing for Crushable), I can’t fault him for such a generous gesture. But the prize itself is wasted on him; it should go to a genuine fan of the show. More »
While rewatching How I Met Your Mother episodes with my boyfriend, I kept getting tripped up when I would see the name Jonathan Groff credited for writing certain episodes (“I’m Not That Guy”, “Everything Must Go”, “The Possimpible”). Surely the same kid who plays Jesse St. James on Glee couldn’t also be working in the HIMYM writers’ room? Turns out it’s a mistake — but IMDb doesn’t know the difference. More »
You know those posters that say All I know about life, I learned in kindergarten? Well, all I know about sex, I learned from fan fiction. I was 12 when I first got into fandom, and about 14 when I started reading graphic fan fiction. I didn’t do so indiscriminately; Firefly had gotten cancelled after half a season, so I was struggling to prolong the stories through fanfiction. R-rated fiction happened to appear on every site I visited. To be honest, I was curious, and there was nothing stopping me except for an “Are you over 17?” pop-up that I could click with only a shadow of guilt. More »
The Awl points out that the new way to resurrect a TV show — and more importantly, those memorable characters — is by having fans play them over Twitter, as was the case with “resurrecting” Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Inspired by that, we’ve done some searching and found the most spot-on Twitter accounts for fictional characters like Peggy Olson, Lord Voldemort, and many more. Some are run by the shows’ respective networks, while others are fans’ pet projects. Either way, to see so much new-wave fan fiction warms my heart. More »
Well played, Carter Bays. The How I Met Your Mother co-creator sent out this tweet a few hours ago. Considering that we’re either going to be yanked out of our clothes or left to fight off the Antichrist in less than 24 hours, at least we can go in peace now that the Mother mystery is solved.
Really, though, let’s make it to September so we can at least see the fallout of the Barney cliffhanger in Monday’s season finale. More »
Sometimes the interests of your childhood come out in your adult life. You loved your pets, and you became a vet (or professional dog walker), you were into drawing and now you’re a graphic designer, you were obsessed with video games and now it’s been seven years since you left your basement . And what you watched when you still had to schedule time in front of the TV around homework can translate to what you’ve got on your DVR now. More »
It’s that time of year again: Prom season! A spectacular night wherein teenagers get to pretend to be way more grown up than they actually are, prom is the holy grail of high school. The dresses! The tuxes! The limos! Magic! Naturally, most people’s real-life proms end up being less than perfect, but that doesn’t stop the phenomenon of the annual television prom episode. From bow dresses to anti-proms, here’s a look at some of our favorite television proms: More »
Why do dinner and a movie when you can do dinner and a TV show, preferably at the same time? This How I Met Your Mother-themed menu for the show’s fictional bar, McLaren’s, is full of awesome references. More »
In Soviet Russia, mother meets you! It’s fortuitous that on a day when I spent two hours discussing adaptation versus appropriation (what many would call stealing) at NYU, this low-budget Russian take on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother hits the Internet. It’s an almost shot-for-shot remake of the sitcom, with the same sets but some tweaks: Ted’s apartment but with older furniture and appliances; MacLaren’s, but with pleather seats and stocked with vodka instead of scotch. We got the chance to see a rough cut of the new Victorious music video for “Beggin’ On Your Knees” today, and it looks really fun. Victoria Justice, Avan Jogia, Daniella Monet, Elizabeth Gillies, and the rest of the cast run around at a carnival, but also get into a little mischief — set to a surprisingly catchy song. More »
So I realized this morning that today is Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday — the day before Lent begins, where you get to stuff your face without reproach because you’ll be giving up those vices for the next 40 days. And when it comes to religious observances, art imitates life quite a bit. You’d be surprised at how many TV shows use food frenzy as a plot device, whether it’s slapstick with characters fighting over something tasty, or food as a destructive force. More »
James Van Der Meme week/month/year continues. Ke$ha cast the actor in her latest video for the song “Blow” — and James ends up Van Der Dead at the end! We think the thing’s totally awesome, but we’re not sure it’s better than the Robin Sparkles’ music video from How I Met Your Mother — also starring JVDB, of course. Which one uses Dawson better? Check them both out and vote in our poll. More »
We’re trying to decide if these Katy Perry promos for her guest spot on How I Met Your Mother are slightly more or slightly less irritating than those James Franco/Anne Hathaway Oscar ads. Probably less, right? More »
Between the Mistletoe on Christmas and the countdown to midnight on New Years Eve, nothing says “I’m about to get herpes from a stranger” like the impromptu (if slightly cliche) holiday hook-up. Here’s our favorite scenes from television and film…tell us if we’re missing any! More »
