In Honor Of Australia Day Here Are 12 Performers We Love

Happy Australia Day!

Similar to our Independence Day, Australia Day celebrates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. The fleet consisted of 11 ships that sailed from Great Britain to Australia to establish the first European colony on the continent.

Leaving on May 13, 1787, it took over eight months for the fleet to reach their destination and as you probably learned in history class, it did contain a large amount of prisoners. Yes, Australia was spawned from convicts. The 11 ships consisted of 1044 people total, with 696 being prisoners and 348 “free” persons that were made up of Civil officers, marines, their wives and their children.

Celebration of Australia Day dates back as far as 1808 and modern day celebrations include citizenship ceremonies, concerts, parties and festivals. Despite the revelry the national holiday is not without its controversy. Some of the Aboriginal community, who are indigenous to Australia, refer to it as “Invasion Day” or “Survival Day,” because, similarly to what Christopher Columbus and those who followed did to the Native Americans, that was officially the day that Australia was no longer their own.

Controversy and politics aside, let’s take a look at our favorite Australians. Of course, we’ll start with a koala.

Here’s some attractiveness math for you: if a man’s with a dog, he is hotness increases 50%. If that dog is a French bulldog, add another 20%. And if said man is carrying said French bulldog in his arms, go ahead and throw in another 15%.

What does this mean for Hugh Jackman? Well, in this photo, his attractiveness has increased by 85% — which, depending on how hot you find regular, dogless Hugh Jackman, could put him off the charts. Here’s another great thing about this bulldog scenario — the Frenchie is named Dali! Probably because his cuteness is surreal and there can be no earthly explanation for it.

This photo was snapped in New York City where it’s gotten quite chilly of late, meaning there might be some photos coming up of Dali wearing some kind of bulldog snow gear. Keep your eyes peeled and get ready for some more math adjustments.

Who Should Join Anne Hathaway in the Cast of Les Miserables?

You may or may not be aware of this, but a movie version of the international musical theatre sensation Les Miserables is currently in the works. This isn’t the first time in recent memory someone has tried to put Victor Hugo’s novel on the screen, but it IS the first time that it’s been done in musical form. And it’s racking up a pretty good cast, too: Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe signed on as escaped con Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert respectively a while ago, and just this week, Anne Hathaway joined the team as Fantine, the ill-fated singer of “I Dreamed a Dream.” So that got us thinking: Who ELSE might shine in this star-studded cast? We have no idea if any of these actors can sing, but hey, that’s never stopped anyone in the past (Sweeney Todd, much?). Here are our picks for the cast of the new Les Mis:

Young Cosette: Mackenzie Foy
Sure, she may be a vampire, but wouldn’t Twilight’s Renesmee make just the sweetest and most heart-breaking young Cosette? Imagine her singing “Castle on a Cloud.” Are you melting yet?

Old Cosette: Lea Michele
Because of course she’d have to be in it somewhere. It may as well be as romantic lead Cosette.

Marius: Nick Jonas
He’s already played the part in London—twice—so why not give it a shot onscreen? I’ll confess that I wasn’t really that taken with his performance in London (or at least, what little of it I’ve seen on YouTube); but that may just be because I think the character has an enormous stick up his arse. I can’t really blame Nick for that.

Hugh explained to Rachael Ray:

“The first show I ever did, singing and dancing, was Beauty and the Beast. I was playing Gaston. Gaston has red tights, knee high boots, and it’s very physical. I had headaches everyday for two months. I went to an astropath [psychic] and he said ‘Well, you’re dehydrated.’ So of course I had four liters of water. I go down to the stage, getting ready for my first number… and I’m like I really need to go again. [The routine is] the most cardiovascular song I’ve ever done: literally I’m picking up Belle and as I pick her up, I stopped singing and right in that moment I realized the muscles you need to release in order to sing are the ones you do not want to release if you need to go. I’m carrying her [over one shoulder] not singing, and she’s going ‘What’s going on? What’s going on?’ So finally, it’s embarrassing at this point. I’ve not sung an entire verse.”

Apparently, this has been Hugh’s go-to embarrassing tale for a few years now — he told it in a Playboy interview in 2008. The weirdest part of this is that he went to a psychic instead of a doctor for medical advice.

“Common cold? Here, eat this crystal ball; it’ll make you shit onstage at the Tonys.”

Who would you rather have do a random cameo on WWE Raw—Snooki for no good reason except that she’s tiny, or Hugh Jackman doing obvious promotion for Real Steel? The correct answer is Hugh, because he managed to crack jokes and crack jaws when he sneaked into the ring and slugged Dolph Ziggler.

Sure, it’s clearly a promotion for Hugh’s new movie Real Steel, and his bit was most likely staged. But then again,Dolph did tweet the other day that he sustained a hairline mandibular fracture. So, we’ve learned this: Not everything goes according to plan, even when the producers map out the script of a wrestling match. But Dolph has a new mouthguard, and everything seems to be cool.

We were going to say that Hugh should make it up to Dolph with a cameo in the movie, but since it’s just a few weeks from release, it’s too late for that. But you know who from the wrestling community will be appearing in the flick? Rima Fakih, a former Miss USA who crowned the winner of a WWE Raw fight in 2010 and even competed herself on WWE Tough Enough.

Hugh Jackman Is the Master of the Surprise Cameo

When you think of Hugh Jackman, it’s usually in a big way: He’s a presence on the silver screen, playing growly fighters like Wolverine and dreamy rebels like in Australia. And even though he’s starring in Real Steel this fall, what’s most caught our attention are the brief, unexpected cameos he’s made in two recent movies.

I feel like enough time has passed for me to spoil this within the post — Jackman’s appearance in X-Men: First Class was one of the best moments in the movie. For some reason, because they didn’t feature him in any of the promotions, I figured that he just wasn’t part of that project — especially since the prequel is set in the 1960s. Even when my boyfriend told me that Wolverine’s been around since the Civil War, I figured this wasn’t his movie. Fox even flatly denied Jackman’s involvement in 2010.

Then this happened:

Kudos to them for keeping it under wraps as long as they did. Most of the reviewers, myself included, also kept mum because we knew what a fun bit it was and didn’t want to ruin it. If Wolverine hadn’t appeared in First Class, the movie would have felt off, or incomplete since it hadn’t utilized all of the existing mutants of the time. Plus, his “Go fuck yourself” was the perfect complement to the upbeat “let’s recruit mutants!” montage.

Hugh Jackman in Real Steel is back to the sharp-eyed, wounded, rough-around-the-edges sexiness we haven’t seen in a long time — at least, not without some adamantium claws attached. His character Charlie Kenton is a man forced into retirement, who still retains that passion for the craft even as he trains his robot replacements. He’ll probably strut around the training ring, muscles glistening, and throw some lucky girl up against the wall and…

Wait — there’s a kid in this movie? A son he abandoned for the sport, who now is the only one who can help him to regain his former glory by building a champion fighter? OK, I’m now 50% less interested.

This all came about when I saw the newest trailer for Real Steel at the Transformers screening the other night. Suddenly, the focus of Charlie’s redemption is all skewed; we’re seeing the movie through his son’s (Dakota Goyo) naïve eyes. It’s just not that sexy anymore.

What’s ironic is that part of Jackman’s sexiness comes from his gold-member status as a celebrity DILF: Most of the paparazzi photos of him are vacationing in Australia or riding the New York subway with his adorable kids. I guess that when it comes to his movies, I just want to see a different sexy side — him being the hot unattached guy he can’t be in real life.

But I’ll still see Real Steel. How can I not? It’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots in the dystopian future. And if there’s anything I love as much (or maybe more) than Hugh Jackman, it’s dystopia.
