Ever since his over-the-top performance got him “banned” from hosting the Golden Globes last year, Ricky Gervais has been plotting his underminey return. Would he pull focus by doing a parallel podcast, as previously threatened? Would he crash the awards show dressed like Jesus, shooting out rapid fire insults like some sort of offensiveness machine?

As it turns out, he’s just going to insult people the good, old fashioned way again: from his officially sanctioned position as host. While he was initially unsure as to whether or not it was a good idea, it seems one particular thing made him say yes: the chance to punish everyone who got offended last year.

Via Ricky’s blog:

It was a tough decision to be honest. There were many pros and cons. I loved doing it, but I was worried that I couldn’t improve on last year. I’m in LA anyway as I’m launching Life’s Too Short on HBO. But then I didn’t want the Globes to overshadow the series. I knew some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)

What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those fucking idiots who said that I’d never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is.

Now here’s the thing. The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended but they were. This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified. The best thing about it is writing the gags. I love writing one liners. Particularly when they can’t be used in any other context. It gives them a special weight on the night if you know what I mean.

It looks like the Golden Globes have realized what the Internet has known for a long, long time: making fun of stuff in an amusing way will get you way more eyeballs than lukewarmly praising it. As well it should. Get ready for some seriously butt-hurt celebrities.

We’ve already told you what we think of the trailer for New Year’s Eve. It’s especially distressing that they managed to get so many seemingly cool people to sign on for roles in it. (Robert DeNiro, my heart doth break for you.) Our friends at Paper Magazine noticed this too, and called Seth Meyers out in the same way Seth has called out so many others for their foolishness in the past: with a full-throated “really?!?!” It would seem the shoe is on the other foot, now. What have you to say for yourself, @sethmeyers21?

This week, Liana argued that the trailer for the upcoming Vince Vaughn film The Dilemma looked terrible and offensive: It was going for cheap laughs with homophobic humor. Vince even made a point, we found out, to keep this joke in the trailer, which is what…standing on some sort of principle? We don’t know.

But a surprisingly insightful comment did come from commenter Diego, who argued that keeping gay jokes entirely out of the cultural lexicon isn’t necessarily the solution.

You’re mixing up gay = funny with gay = something to make fun of. Gay as something to make fun of is just plain lame, no argument there. But gay as a funny works for the same reason any misunderstanding can be funny. There are a million sitcom plots where a character pretends to be gay or of the opposite gender, and they’re funny because of the disconnect between what the audience knows and what the characters on screen know. Just because the misunderstanding is about sexuality doesn’t mean the writer’s a homophobe. Don’t be so quick to pull that trigger.

While we get Diego’s point about the genre of mistaken identity being not gay-specific (hey, Shakespeare did it, and Oscar Wilde too!) and therefore not intentionally offensive, we still think that The Dilemna‘s insistence on separating “bad gay” from “good gay” doesn’t really apply to that situation.

I was able to find a bit of a video clip of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at the DGAs on Saturday night. Elmo’s having trouble falling asleep so Ricky tells him that maybe he needs a celebrity lullaby to help him drift off. Elmo asks what a celebrity lullaby is and Ricky explains that it’s when an “unbelievably famous person comes over and sings to you.”

Elmo then asks, “What famous person is going to sing to Elmo?” Ricky, holding a guitar, is confused and says, “What do you mean what famous person is going to sing to you?!”

Then Elmo gets very excited and asks, “Well is it Brad Pitt? Elmo loves Brad Pitt!”

Ricky is very discouraged when he tells him that he, Ricky Gervais, is going to sing, and Elmo asks, “Is Ricky Gervais a celebrity?”

It’s very cute! Then again, I can’t blame Elmo. As much as I love Ricky Gervais, I think a lot of people would be very happy to have Brad Pitt sing them a lullaby in bed. Who’s first?

Since I posted that story about George Clooney thinking about adopting Brad Pitt’s children, I was reminiscing about all the funny moments we’ve seen from the two friends and co-stars. I love their little digs at each other and the way that they make fun of each other. It’s great that they don’t take things too seriously when they don’t need to.

PittWatch reader Amy posted a link to a hilarious interview with Brad Pitt and George Clooney back when they were promoting Ocean’s Twelve. It’s worth watching for a good laugh, and I thought it made a nice light-hearted Friday Flashback!

I love their story about faked photos of the two of them on set with a “goat and vaseline” that George explains was not true at all since it was actually a small sheep. They also said that one of the main reasons they did Oceans’s Twelve was because Matt Damon was really gunning for Sexiest Man of the Year and figured he really needed the film to help him.

One of the main things that attracts me to someone is a sense of humor, so a video like this is a clear reason as to why I love Brad Pitt – and George Clooney too! Enjoy!

With George Clooney having a new girlfriend again a lot of people in the press have been asking him if he’s finally starting to feel the urge to ditch his bachelor ways, settle down with one woman, and perhaps have a couple of children of his own. It doesn’t sound like he’s ready for that route, but he may look into adoption:

“I am going to adopt some of Brad Pitt’s (children), I owe him a few.”

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are truly my favorite “bromance” in Hollywood. They never fail to make me smile!

I had wanted to post the video clips of Brad Pitt’s interview on Bill Maher’s show sooner but it was hard to find any that weren’t being removed almost immediately! So far these two seem to be sticking around, so let’s hope they don’t get pulled down.

The first clip:

Brad comes out to thunderous applause after Bill shows the trailer for Inglourious Basterds, which is no surprise is it? I like that Bill talks briefly to Brad about the movie, but then moves straight on to his work with Make It Right. He made a very strong point of making it clear that while the hurricane itself was “an act of God” (with both of them joking around about that as well), the resulting disaster was man-made, that the hurricane should not have had that kind of effect on the city. He said that if the levies had been taken care of properly it wouldn’t have been so devastating and there’s a responsibilty to help fix that – hence to make it right.

I also enjoyed hearing Brad explaining what architecture is in his words.

Second segment of Brad’s appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” below the cut!

The second clip:

I had a good laugh when Bill said that Brad uses his celebrity to help raise awareness for important issues and asked, “isn’t that why you’re on the show?” and Brad laughed and replied, “I’m not sure WHY I’m on this show!” He then joked that he loves the show and it’s one of his favorites but you either have to be brave or stupid to come on it.

Bill brought up the comment Brad made on the Today Show interview about “no religion” and Brad briefly explained it in context for anyone who had missed it, re-iterating the “no religion, legalization and taxation of pot, pro-gay marriage” platform, then added it was also known as the “Bill Maher going straight to hell” platform.

However, Bill did ask Brad to clarify his “no religion” stance. I’m hesitant to even bring it up because discussing religion is just really precarious and it can turn ugly very quickly, but I was impressed that Brad didn’t back down and explained his issues with religion. He started off by saying that he was brought up with religion but that it was something that just never made much sense to him. He added that he never wanted to step on anyone’s toes for whatever their own beliefs were though, but he explained that once he became aware of defining lines where certain religious groups refuse to allow others to live the way they choose (such as gay marriage) he had more trouble with it. He said (after joking that he was addressing the three Christians who actually watch Bill’s show), “You have to check what country you’re living in because the freedom that allows you to practice your religion is the same freedom you’re stepping on, so it’s not right.”

I’m sure that’s going to get drummed up for a good long time!

Then Bill went on to discuss pot, saying Brad’s performance in True Romance was in the top two stoner performances ever, then said although he’s a great actor, it seemed to come “from home”. Brad acknowledged that he’s had his day but that nowadays smoking marijuana just turns him into “a donut”. Bill also commented on a time he saw Brad back in the day, and that he used to roll the perfect joint. Brad’s response was practically classic: “I’m an artist.” When Bill asked him why he gave that up, Brad explained he’s a dad now and needs to be alert.

I also laughed – probably because it’s just so much my type of humor and the kind of joke I would make – when Bill told Brad that although he doesn’t know him well, he’s known him a long time and Brad has always been a very polite person. Brad looked at him and deadpanned, “F–k you man,” much to the amusement of the studio audience.

It’s kind of funny to watch this interview because they both sort of have the same almost dry sense of humor so they play well off each other. I know that promoting his films is part of Brad’s job, but it’s still more enjoyable to see something like this, where there’s a good connection between the two, and having some jokes flying back and forth – especially the ones where you stop and ask, “wait, that’s a joke, right?”

I hope you enjoy the segments as much as I did!
