It feels like it was just yesterday that I still believed in celebrity romance. I still believed that two famous people could fall in love, make beautiful children and stage candid “Oh us? We’re just getting ice cream with the kids” photo shoots. Then, like every other American with a heart, my world came crashing down last month when Heidi Klum and Seal announced that they were separating.

I’ll never forget where I was (bed) or what I was wearing (my retainer) or who I called first (my therapist). For some reason, no other celebrity divorce hurt me this badly. I’m not sure if it was because they had four kids or because they took couple costumes to a whole new level or just because they were such an interestingly matched couple. But for some reason I really had trouble coming to terms with the news.

For the rest of the weekend, I let myself pretend that maybe this was all a misunderstanding. Maybe Heidi meant to go file something else and accidentally filed the wrong paperwork. Maybe it was a practical joke. Maybe it was a dare that she took too far. But maybe, a little voice said in the back of my head, maybe it’s true. And I made myself start to accept the truth.

Then, just when I was beginning to enter the leave the denial stage of grief, Heidi pulls this interview with UK’s InStyle March issue out of nowhere. While she was clearly interviewed before the big break-up, it still burns to see things like this in print: “I don’t know why we work, my husband and I. We just do. We are black and white – yin and yang.”

Really Heidi? You went from “Yin and Yang” to “does anyone know a good divorce attorney?” in a matter of weeks. How is that even possible? Do you have any idea what interviews like this do to me when I’m in such a fragile state?

All of a sudden I’ve gone from almost accepting the truth to still believing that maybe, just maybe, you and Seal could get back together.

She won an Emmy for her work on Mike & Molly and recently hosted an episode of SNL. The New York Times published an interview with the funny actress, and discussed her teenage years at a Joliet, Illinois Catholic. Evidently, Melissa was a cheerleader at for a bit before dropping out to become a black-lipstick-wearing goth girl. She explains the transition:

“I remember being in a pep rally, and I heard one of the coaches of the boys’ teams making a dumb joke about the dumb cheerleaders, and I thought, Are you kidding me? I’m out there doing back handsprings and aerials on blacktop to cheer for your stupid team that, by the way, is not doing that well. And you’re in here with the guys making fun of it? I was like, I’m done.”

My other favorite part of the interview came when Melissa discussed her early years of doing stand-up in New York:

“I didn’t really know how to write jokes, so I just told weird long stories about being tall and beautiful and wealthy in New York. I’d tell them very seriously, but I kind of looked like a drag queen at the time with big wigs and crazy 12-inch platform heels.”

Awesome. I’d give anything to have seen that.

We met up for tea at Local in Silverlake to discuss the highs (Paris Fashion Week!) and the lows (16-hour days!) of the gig.

Did you always imagine you’d be a stylist when you were growing up?

I come from such a small town, [so] I never thought about the fact that people styled other people. I loved clothes, and I was enamored with fashion, but styling was something I never even thought possible as a child.

So, how did you get your start? Did you have any sort of professional training?

I moved to Los Angeles to go to school and once I got here, I really couldn’t afford it. I have business, marketing, and multimedia degrees, and I was going to study fashion design, but I wasn’t able to get my hands on any more student loans. But I was so enamored by the art scene here: I was at The Viper Room three nights a week, going to art shows, museums, music events. It was just about making connections.

Connections are everything!

I’m always trying to make new connections—but it’s not always about work, work, work. When I’m out, I’m just generally trying to get to know people who are interested in the same things I’m interested in. Then things just sort of happen—like, “Oh, you’re a designer? I’m a stylist! Let’s work on a project together!” Sometimes you just have to think about who you are creatively, and then it becomes organic when you start to work with people.

What was the first project you worked on?

It was an independent film that went to Sundance in 2006 called The Go Getter with Zooey Deschanel, Jena Malone, and Lou Pucci. I started working with the costume designer, Marie Schley, as an assistant; it was fascinating. I learned so much—how to shop, how to take direction, everything that goes into purchases and returns, working with costume houses, working with talent, setting up fittings, etc. After that project wrapped, I started working on commercials and met with a bunch of other talented people, and I learned an enormous amount under Costume Designer/Stylist Marie-Sylie Deveau. Film and commercials are very different things, but they’re both fun.

What’s the difference?

With costuming [for a film], you’re working on a story, and you’re building a character. With wardrobe styling [for commercials], you’re instead styling a character/image, and there’s a basic concept behind it. Your focus is on the product image instead of the story, as opposed to an entire script where you’re learning about a character and there are different outfit changes throughout the entire process.

Are you literally just shopping for outfits all day, and is that as awesome as it sounds?

It varies so much from project to project. We start off with a storyboard and treatment, then meet with the director, producer, and client, and sit down and see how many actors we actually have—it could be one or two people, it could be twenty. Then, depending on what the idea [for the commercial] is, we’ll go at a costume house, and start pulling certain things from there.

What’s it like inside a costume house? Miles and miles of clothes? And can anyone (me) just walk on in?

Many costume houses require a pass, but if you’re interested in checking one out, you can always call ahead and see what their policies are for getting access. Their wardrobe is full of stuff, anything from modern-day pieces going back to the 1800s!

Tell me a little more about what the shopping process is like.

You have to think about what you’re going to shop for each specific person—you make a list of things you think that person might wear as a character. What you don’t find in costume houses, you might find in stores. It could be anything from J. Crew to Urban Outfitters.

Our turnover is very quick—we might get a call for a project a couple of days before it happens, and the next day we’re shopping. If a store doesn’t have a specific piece we need, we’ll call around the area to see what other store has that piece. We run all day from place to place looking for specific things so that we can figure out what exactly it is that we want for the character. We usually try to pull somewhere between 10-25 options for each character.

Lucky sat down with Temple to get her take on the film and its fashion—the movie meticulously mines the ’80s for everything from music to puffy pink paint to feathered hair. (Check out Milla Jovovich’s do in the trailer.) She also had a lot to say about underwear—specifically Victorian underpinnings. We’ll explain…read on.

I like your shoes.

These are so comfortable! I’m wearing Miu Miu again tonight for the premiere. They’re my favorite. I’ll be wearing bright blue glitter heels. Sensational!

Miu Miu does those amazing glitter boots too, with the crisscrosses on them.

I have a pair of those. They’re amazing.

You are going to be a good person to talk to about fashion, I can tell already!

I want to be a lingerie designer at some point in my life.

I heard about that. What sparked your interest in Victorian lingerie?

When I was pretty young I started wearing vintage slips and little vintage onesies from the Victorian ages over fishnet tights with biker boots, and it kind of became my thing. I love corsetry and, let’s be honest, being a woman is a pretty powerful thing. Underwear just makes you feel good. I’m not a huge makeup person, so in the morning it’s more about picking out my underwear set. I’m wearing the Juno set by Agent Provocateur today. I’m a huge Agent Provocateur fan, and I just think underwear is such a sensual, beautiful thing. If you’re wearing great underwear, you can take over the world!

Do you actually sketch your own designs?

I do and I really hope I can make it happen. I don’t want to stop acting at all, but I hope on the side I can do some lingerie designing.

You were born in 1989. What’s your take on the ’80s? Does it seem like a fabulous time to you, a cheesy time, or both?

I’ve never been crazy about ’80s fashion. Except for some Azzedine Alaia. My mom has a beautiful collection that I’ve started dabbling in! But my parents were very busy in the ’80s doing a lot of rock n’ roll music videos, so my picture of the ’80s was very different than the Dirty Girl picture of the ’80s.The movie is colorful and pop-y. I grew up with a much more punk, rock ‘n’ roll idea of the time. It was really exciting to get to explore a different part of it because it is much more feminine. Much more girly, and at heart I’m a very girly human being.

Your character has some, let’s say, attention-getting, outfits.

I like the fact that my character has more ’70s clothing in a ’80s world. She’s got on her mom’s hand-me-downs. I think the ’70s and the ’90s are my two favorite time periods for clothing. It was really fun to wear all the little rompers and the amazing platform shoes. I got to have this long sleek hair with these beautiful Farrah Fawcett bangs. I think of the ’80s as, like, bad perms. So that was fun. Danielle sticks out like a sore thumb in her high school, especially in Oklahoma where everyone’s much more straight laced. Yes, she looks slutty but in a daaaaamn awesome way!

You seem like a real style chameleon. How do you describe your style?

I think it’s important as an actress to be able to change your look up. In my personal life, my friends tease me for being a bag lady because I’m normally looking quite homeless. Grunge is my favorite. I like to buy a lot of ripped boy jeans, flannel shirts, oversized T-shirts, round sunglasses, lots of necklaces, lots of eyeliner. But I also like the style from movies like Clueless and The Craft. Oh my gosh, I wish I’d brought my bag with me to show you. I have a “Clueless” bag, it’s the new Prada thing, their fluffy bag. You’re going to die when you see it! I named it, because it’s my favorite thing in the world. It’s called Clarence. It’s hot pink—this big fur bag, not real fur, like proper old fake fuzz-fur—with a little Prada sign and a metal chain. It’s very Clueless.

It sounds crazy—in a good way.

I like kilts and knee-highs too, love them! I almost wore that today, actually.

What are some of your favorite places to shop?

There’s one specific thrift store near my house in Los Feliz, called Squaresville. They have a really cool mixture of great old clothes slash second-hand designer stuff. I bought an Alexander McQueen dress there for like 75 bucks and it’s amazing. I’m a big flea market girl too. I like the Melrose Fairfax Flea Market. And I grew up going to the South of France, so I went to a lot of beautiful flea markets there.

Paz de la Huerta wants people to take her seriously. She might do tabloid-y things like fall down drunk at awards shows and assault other fameballs in bars, but at the end of the day, she is the Best Actress Of Our Generation, and she is not shy about telling us.

In a recent interview with Flaunt.com, she said as much. When asked about the media’s “witch hunts and spectacles,” Paz had this to say:

I feel sorry for people these days. The media really feeds off of sensationalism. I work incredibly hard. I’ve studied acting since I was 15. I consider myself one of the rare artists that are left—especially of the young actors. It’s unbelievable what some people consider great now.

How dare we mock her for the ridiculous things she says and does! Poor Paz was just minding her own business rubbing honey on her tits in front of reporters and spewing T.M.I. about her sex life, and us sad, jealous haters had to go and sensationalize it.

Here’s an idea: if you don’t want the negative attention to distract from your very important work as an actress, maybe stop trying so hard to get attention? I can’t speak for other people, but I don’t make fun of Paz because she’s sexy. I make fun of her because she tries way too hard to be sexy, while at the same time proclaiming that this makes her some kind of avant-garde intellectual. You know who’s good at acting? Meryl Streep. We know this because she’s done a lot of fine acting, not because she told us. I guess 15-year-old Paz was too busy making sex eyes at everyone to pay attention on the first day of acting class when they went over “show, don’t tell.” Or maybe she thought “show” meant “show your boobs”? Who knows.

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of interviewing Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Teresa Giudice, at the opening of the Aetrex store in Englewood, NJ. I thought I would have just one question for her: “Is bitch better?!” but found I had a few more. Teresa actually seemed incredibly down-to-earth in person; she drove herself to the event, parked right outside the store, and walked in without an entourage. Teresa was even prettier in person, and was friendly and eager to talk. After the interview, I decided to try the pizza at her husband, Joe Giudice’s, restaurant. There, I met his sister, brother-in-law, and mother, who were all working. His mother was very warm and sweet, and she sat and talked with me for awhile. She said people pronounce her last name “ju-dech,”ju-deh-chay,” or “ju-dice,” and I could use whichever I wanted. Also, the pizza was really good. All in all, my day confirmed my decision to be Team Teresa. Check out our interview below:

Your first cookbook, Skinny Italian, was so complete with all the recipes and personal anecdotes. How is Fabulicious different?

Fabulicious is a family cookbook and it has different recipes, pictures of the whole family, and great desserts.

Do you have any immediate or future business plans that you could share with us?

Yes; I’m coming out with my own adult beverage. It’s a Bellini and it’s going to be called a “Fabullini.” I’ve got a raspberry and peach. It’s Prosecco wine, peach purée, and raspberry.

I’ve always related to you, but I have especially so this season, with family issues. Have you gotten a lot of support or criticism this season?

Support. It’s really, really hard, you know?

On the show, Kathy gave a vague reason for the demise of her relationship with you. She said you said “family sucks.” Is there more to the story?

Yeah, I never said that. To me, family is always so important. I’m the one who always kept the family together, because family is the most important thing to me. There was a period in our lives, me and Kathy [Wakile], when we didn’t speak, you know, when we were younger. So when I got married to my husband, and had children, I made it a point to make sure to hang out with Kathy. Me and Kathy were like sisters. And then it was weird; her husband always kept cracking on me and that gets old after a while. It’s okay in the beginning, okay, fine, you’re funny, but then after a while, it gets really old.

Last week we shared seven behind-the-scenes tidbits from the Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog companion guide, which featured memories and photos from the cast and crew. Now we’ve got an exclusive interview with Maurissa Tancharoen, writer, actress, and singer, who has been welcomed into the Whedon clan both personally and professionally — she co-wrote Dr. Horrible in 2008 and married writing partner Jed Whedon (Joss‘ brother) in 2009.

Since the musical’s unprecedented success, she’s worked on Drop Dead Diva and Dollhouse, and is currently writing for Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. She’s also appeared on Dr. Horrible co-star Felicia Day‘s webseries The Guild. Crushable spoke with Tancharoen about her geek past and future, including her favorite TV show growing up, responding to the misguided Help Nathan Buy Firefly movement, and upcoming musical projects.

Did you consider yourself a geek growing up? If so, what kinds of fandoms were you involved in?

I considered myself a small Asian girl who was terrible at sports. So yes? But I was overjoyed when Dance became part of the PE curriculum during my sophomore year in high school. I could finally prove I was coordinated. Growing up, I was a huge syndicated-television fan. I watched endless hours of I Love Lucy (I had clothing, lunchboxes plural, magnets, figurines, and would walk around saying “Luuuuuucyyyy…”), The Three Stooges, Gilligan’s Island, Fantasy Island, and Three’s Company.

How did Joss approach you to work on Dr. Horrible?

The character, Dr. Horrible, a supervillain who is basically villainy-challenged, was an idea Joss had been toying around with for a bit. He originally envisioned it as a podcast until he saw the brilliant hilarity that Jed, Zack and I (along with our friend, Nick Towne) posted on the youtube. I like to call it “the youtube”. This brilliant hilarity I’m speaking of was one of the countless strike videos that bombarded the internet during the Writer’s Guild Strike a few years ago. But OUR strike video was a gem. And Joss knows when he needs to grab a hold of something so precious. Covet it, and crush it with love, and then snort it. That’s just how he lives. So what was the question?

From looking at your IMDb page, it appears that Dr. Horrible was your first songwriting credit. How, then, did you approach the songwriting process; and was it more exciting, or nerve-wracking?

During my singing group days, I wrote a few songs. Are these songs I want you to hear? A resounding NO. And over the years, Jed and I have written a lot of songs together. I guess you could say our relationship started in music. I guess you could also say barf. But he is the musical genius and I am his sidekick. I’m usually like, “What if it goes something like this?” And he says, “Shut up.” And then I’ll suggest, “Or maybe la la la?” And he says, “Go to your room.” That’s basically our process. It’s totally fun!

Actress and performer Elizabeth Gillies has certainly done her homework: Before her current starring role on Nickelodeon's Victorious as mean girl Jadelyn West, she had a guest spot on a Nickelodeon show in the '90s (6 to 8 Frozen Zone), and in 2008 she appeared in the Broadway musical 13 playing -- you guessed it -- a huge snob who also belts out hit songs.

Victorious, entering its second season, is a sitcom about Tori Vega (Victoria Justice) and her struggles to fit in at Hollywood Arts, a performing-arts school. (It's also the brainchild of Dan Schneider, creator of iCarly, Kenan & Kel, The Amanda Show, and more.) In addition to the usual high school relationship woes, Tori and her friends -- including frenemy Jade -- find themselves having to write and perform original songs, and deal with filmmakers and divas. Crushable sat down with Gillies at the press junket for the new Victorious soundtrack and chatted about '90s Nickelodeon shows, veganism, and Justin Bieber's recent troubles with fans in Liverpool. More »
Post from: Crushable

You know, I saw 13 when it first ran on Broadway, a few years ago.

You did? No you didn’t!

I did! You’re the one who sang “It Can’t Be True”—that is the only song I downloaded from the show.

Oh, no way! Oh my gosh, thank you so much. For some reason, I have this thing, even though I know a lot of people saw the show, I have this vision that no one saw the show. So whenever I hear it, now that I’m on Victorious, it’s like… It was an extraordinary experience to work on that team. A lot of us were making our Broadway debut at 14 or 15, and it was incredible. It was just the best experience in the entire world. I really miss getting to sing up there and have my little moments, it was a lot of fun.

I’m not just saying this, but Lucy was my favorite character.

Oh, thank you. I usually get the antagonist—I’m really not that mean!

What is it like playing the mean girl on Victorious?

It’s fun to stir up the drama, but I couldn’t play a character that was one-dimensional. Jade cries, she’s weird; she has so many sides. I would just die if I had to play a one-dimensional, queen-bee mean girl who walks the halls and pushes books out of people’s hands. I could never, ever do that, so I’m excited that I get this sort of weird, twisted character. I love Jade.

Do you draw on any famous mean girls from TV or movies?

I love Mean Girls the movie; I think you can get a lot from that. There’s an essence of control that I like to play with mean girls. There are mean girls who scream and go crazy, which Jade does, but I think the calmer and freakier it is sometimes, when you’re victimizing people, I try to do that a little bit. But it’s whatever feels right in the moment, whatever the situation calls for.

Speaking again of 13, your co-star Ariana [Grande] was in the show as well. Was it comfortable, then, for you to move into Victorious already knowing someone?

Oh, totally. It was amazing. It was surreal because we went through the whole audition process for 13 multiple times, and they kept recasting it. It’s basically our fourth job together, because they recast 13 three times and only three kids made it. So we were in that cast; it was wild. We shared a dressing room for 13, and we lived together last year. It’s been a crazy journey for us, knowing each other and knowing where we started and where we are now, it’s amazing to see the transformation. I was looking at a picture this morning of us, in the beginning of 13. I had this curly, light-brown hair and big eyebrows, and Ariana had this crazy, curly black hair. We were so young… We look completely different, and we’re completely different people. It’s wonderful.

What is it like on the set with Ariana, with the other cast members?

It’s wonderful; we get along so well. We were all hanging out til crazy-late last night, just talking. We just love each other’s company; we can’t get enough of each other. Just chilling out, hugging, we really love each other. I’m so thankful that we get to work with a cast that embraces each other, because nothing’s worse than being in a cast that doesn’t want to be around each other. I’ve been in all casts where everyone loves each other; I’m very lucky.

How did USA approach you about the Character Approved series?

Basically, I got a letter in the mail saying, “We want you to be a part of this program” — it outlined the responsibilities and why they chose me. They came to the restaurant to film, and it was cool. It’s a really interesting group of people that were inducted this year, and I thought some of the interviews on the site, and the program that aired the other night, were great.

So how did you get started in the culinary industry?

I grew up in a restaurant family. My grandmother owned a small diner, so starting when I was about 10 years old, my mother and father owned a couple different diners. After school and on weekends, I started to work with them, cooking really simple comfort food. Instead of going to college, I went right to culinary school – that was at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York – and from there I went right to Napa to work at the French Laundry for four and a half years. At that point, I was 26 years old and decided it was time for me to run my own kitchen, develop my own style. I started at a really small restaurant called Trio, in Evanston, just north of Chicago; I did that for three years. While I was the chef there, I met my business partner Nick [Kokonas], and we opened Alinea in 2005.

I’ve noticed that Alinea has a YouTube channel that posts behind-the-scenes videos of you discussing menu structure and other facets of the business. What made you decide to move into the social media realms, and how has it affected your business?

We’ve already embraced social media, going back to 2002 when I was at Trio. I was a very active poster on a site called eGullet, a food community site. It’s a great resource, like you said, to interact with your clients. They understand what they want, what their expectations are, and you can see what people are saying. It’s a great way to keep up with food trends globally. That was back in 2002 when Facebook and Twitter weren’t even around; now it’s with Twitter and Facebook, most of which I do as well. You have the ability to reach so many people if you think about it purely from a business point of view.

We don’t pay a publicist – we haven’t hired a publicist since 2006 or 2007 – because literally with 25 or 30,000 Twitter followers, you can put out a link to a YouTube video with any kind of message you have. We have a component to our cookbook website called the Alinea Mosaic: You can put up any message you want and not only are your target markets following you, but all the mainstream ones as well. I’m gonna hit everyone on the gourmet sections of The New York Times. It’s such a great resource, it’s so authentic. Not that there’s anything wrong with publicists. But a publicist comes to you [the consumer] and says, “Grant at Alinea is doing this weird thing with vaporizing the rinds of oranges…” It seems more real if it’s coming right from me.

Has your cuisine ever been influenced by the people who come to dine at Alinea and communicate with you via social media?

Absolutely. I think it’s the starting point for creativity a lot of the time. People will be chattering about a specific course they’ve had at another restaurant. Whether they’re foodies or other chefs, there’s a lot of information you can gain from that, about expectations and understanding what people want from a restaurant like Alinea, it really helps you streamline your business in an operational sense, to give the people what they want. At the end of the day, we’re in the hospitality industry, so we have to provide a service and a product. The better we know them, the better off we’re gonna be to make it happen. We’ve learned a lot; we spend a tremendous amount of time answering questions on the sites, emailing people.
