Unlike fellow young mom Bristol Palin, who has hemmed and hawed over where she went wrong with birth control, Jamie bravely admits that she simply didn’t have any.

I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls… I was really scared to go to the doctor. And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn’t want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl.

The Nickelodeon kids have always been held in higher esteem than their Disney counterparts, who have drug problems and rehab stints under their belts. It’s no wonder that Jamie felt a more subtle pressure to present a wholesome image and felt that it couldn’t be publicized that she was having sex.

What’s also interesting is Jamie Lynn’s side of how she was portrayed during her pregnancy. With the big magazine announcement and her decision to keep the baby, it certainly seemed as if she were glamorizing teen pregnancy. After all, the family had been supportive of Britney having two children at the relatively young age of 24. However, Jamie Lynn apologizes here for “the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down.”

If you reread her quotes from the big announcement in 2007, you can see that even in the beginning she was more resigned than overjoyed. “I’m the one who has to live with it for the rest of my life,” she said. “I put myself in this position, an adult position, so I have to act like an adult and take responsibility for what I did.” That means ducking out of the spotlight and not exploiting daughter Maddie with a reality show or staged paparazzi shots.

However, just because she wasn’t on MTV didn’t mean that Jamie Lynn wasn’t excited to watch 16 and Pregnant and its sequel Teen Mom. “When I saw MTV’s Teen Mom was coming out,” she writes, “I remember thinking, Oh my God, I cannot wait to see this show because there’s someone else out there.” Interestingly, she doesn’t comment on any of the teen moms’ troubles with the law, or their subsequent breakups with their children’s fathers.

I definitely recommend you read the whole essay at Glamour, because there’s no bullshit about what she was going through. “I was a kid who did a kid show,” she writes. “Then I went away and raised my child, and the world has never met me as an adult.” I for one am glad to meet this adult.

Go on Twitter, and you’ll see a ton of retweets of basically the same sentiment: Hilary’s pregnancy means that your childhood is over. @ohmyjustinbiebs best outlines the dilemma of all young Millennials in this tweet.

The thing is, Hilary’s Disney career wasn’t even part of these kids’ childhoods. The Lizzie McGuire movie (which marked the end to the TV series) came out in 2003, four years before Selena Gomez‘s Wizards of Waverly Place even started. Zack and Cody weren’t enjoying the Suite Life until 2005. Lizzie McGuire doesn’t even play in repeats, and it’s listed as “DVD availability unknown” on Netflix.

These younger fans know Hilary Duff, of course, but it’s for her later projects like Material Girls and Gossip Girl. Case in point: Even though she’s trending on Twitter, they’ve misspelled her name as Hillary!

One of my friends (who’s 20) best summarized this divide on her Facebook status: The fact that Lizzie McGuire is pregnant makes me feel really old. The kids who watched Zoe 101 must feel ancient. Because these kids should stop pretending like they ever watched Lizzie hang out with Gordo and Miranda, and instead admit that the only teen-star-turned-mother that they have any emotional connection to is Jamie Lynn Spears!

Instead, Lovato will focus on her music, especially since she first realized the extent of her troubles when she had to drop out of a Jonas Brothers tour last summer. Disney reps released a statement saying that they support her decision. Because Sonny with a Chance was built around Lovato’s Sonny and other characters performing on a fictional sketch show called So Random!, the studio has a safety net: The next season will be written based on the sketch show itself. (Think TGS without the frame of 30 Rock.)

The new generation of young actresses seem to all get their start on television shows built around their brand. And in many cases, those partnerships end badly when the young Disney or Nickelodeon lady decides she’s done with her squeaky-clean image. Here are the major examples from the last few years, split by network.

Maybe it’s the pristine image that Disney pushes of its girls that make these partings seem that much more bitter:

• Hannah Montana ended without much fanfare, but in a way that seemed to do honor to the story: Miley Cyrus‘ character revealed her true identity, with the last few episodes devoted to the fallout of her decision. In the end, Miley’s friends go to college without her and she goes on to pursue a movie career. (Meta much?)
• At the time that Hilary Duff‘s show Lizzie McGuire was on the airwaves, Disney’s policy was that series end after 65 episodes. There’s a series finale leading into The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but it got aired out of order, so that the technical “last” episode is just a standalone. Disney wanted to send Lizzie and co. to high school in an ABC spin-off, but the deal fell apart due to Duff’s reps claiming she wasn’t being paid enough.
• Selena Gomez — Lovato’s on-screen bff in Princess Protection Program — is still starring on Wizards of Waverly Place, plus the sequel to the Wizards movie.

For the most part, Nickelodeon shows seem to have a smoother transition with their leading ladies:

• Emma Roberts, who was already an endearing preteen in Unfabulous, continues to win at life with her appearances in the indie Lymelife and the more mainstream Scream 4. It’s not clear if Unfabulous‘ series finale were planned; it seems that the last few episodes were cobbled together as a made-for-TV movie, with some semblance of concluding the storylines.
• Arguably the most normal of the bunch, Charlotte Arnold parlayed the success of her offbeat show Naturally, Sadie into her current role as Holly J on Degrassi. By the time the series finale rolls around, she has to decide whether or not to go on a safari in Africa, and she gets her guy.
• Miranda Cosgrove has actually put off college — she got into NYU and USC — to continue filming iCarly.
• That said, every family needs a black sheep. Jamie Lynn Spears shocked viewers and their parents alike when she announced in 2007 that she was pregnant at the age of 16. (This was a few years before MTV would strike ratings gold with 16 & Pregnant.) Her show Zoey 101 managed to complete a fourth season, but the series finale sounds like it was incredibly shaky, with no real conclusion to the series.

So there you have it. Part of growing up for young actresses these days is leaving the shows that made them famous. Whether or not it’s a clean break is part of how we regard them in their future projects.

Meryl Streep was the one to get some attention for speaking against it. In a recent interview Streep said that whether it is for personal gain or charity, nothing would compare to maintaining kid’s privacy and parents should never do so.

Streep told Contactmusic, “One thing I learned very early on is when you are famous, you lose your right to privacy. And, if you promote your children, if you have them photographed, then they lose their rights.”

On ‘living’ with the paparazzi, Streep said, “They can follow me, take a picture, whatever they want to do. But my kids, no.”

Jessica Alba along with Brangelina, Jamie Lynn Spears and Matthew McConaughey have recently sold the exclusivity to their newborn first photos for a total of over $17 million. Do you think this is a wrong thing to do?
