The 10 Best Moments From VH1′s The TRL Decade Documentary

Last night, VH1 aired a very special episode of its ongoing documentary series Rock Docs: An hour dedicated to the decade-long run of MTV‘s Total Request Live, or as we lovingly knew it, TRL. I definitely recommend you check it out, because no matter your age it’s likely that you relied on TRL for your breaking music and movie news from 1998-2008.

VH1 got together former VJs Carson Daly, Quddus, Damien Fahy, Vanessa Minnillo, and others, plus artists like the Backstreet Boys and Mandy Moore to comment on the ups and downs of the show’s run. They cover everything from Columbine and 9/11 to stars’ breakdowns and hospitalizations. TRL was like being invited into celebrities’ private circle, but you also got the sense that the kids in the studio and clustered outside the MTV building controlled the action. As Kid Rock said, ”The TRL decade was so wrong, but it was very close to right.”

So, we’ve rounded up our ten favorite moments from last night—from quotes we’ve never heard before to crazy fans to when the folks at TRL knew that they had gone from reporting on pop culture to being a part of pop culture.

1. Carson Daly takes credit for Jessica Simpson: TRL‘s first big hits and frequent guests were the bubblegum pop set, and Carson believes that he played a big part in making Jessica Simpson a household name. He mentions how he heard one of her early power ballads — even though the first song of hers we heard was “I Think I’m in Love with You” — and brought it to the show’s producers. So, he acknowledged, he helped to get her famous faster than if she had just been playing on Radio Disney or somesuch.

2. Britney’s ass: It was a funny enough juxtaposition to see cute little Britney Spears interviewing Method Man and Redman while doing guest-host duties. But then Method Man told a hilarious story about how, while posing for a photo, he leaned in to Britney right as the camera flashed and whispered, ”You got a fat ass for a white girl.” Better yet, right after they snapped the photo, the teen pop queen turned around and said, straight-faced, “Thank you.”

3. “Tiffany the crazy *NSYNC girl”: No matter what the medium, you’ll always have way too passionate fans. Young Tiffany was one example that all of the VJs remembered well: She competed against another girl for the chance to see *NSYNC’s new video first, but the other girl had a better handle on random details like which doll was wearing a basketball jersey. When Carson laughed off Tiffany’s defeat, she growled, “I’ll kill you!”

4. Making it to Saturday Night Live: As proud as he was of Jessica Simpson, Carson seemed even prouder of when Jimmy Fallon introduced his Carson Daly impression on SNL in 2002. He later appeared in-character on TRL, down to the same outfit.

5. Nipplegate, the early years: The one mention that Da Brat got was for the time she hosted TRL wearing a shirt unbuttoned over a bra… a sheer bra. As one of the producers tells it, suddenly he heard in his ear, “Nipple!” But somehow back in 2000, this wasn’t as huge a deal as in 2004 when we got an eyeful of Janet Jackson‘s nipple. Sure, the producers alerted Da Brat and she apologized — and many think it wasn’t accidental at all — but no viewers were scarred.

OK, usually I try to make Daily WTF a non-celebrity story. But then I stumbled across this horrifying image on Dlisted, and I thought it would be offensive to try and push anything else as more wtf-worthy today. So. This is a self-portrait that Jessica Simpson voluntarily posted to her Twitter—the mom-to-be wearing a deformed penis mask for her friend Lauren Zelman‘s bachelorette party.

The fact that she resembles a NSFW cross between the Coneheads and Eric Stoltz in Mask doesn’t seem to faze Jessica. Then again, she likes her strange costumes: She announced her pregnancy by dressing up as a mummy, after all. Regardless, I’m downloading this image to show to my children someday when they break something valuable.

Jessica Simpson has learned a valuable lesson from January Jones: Announce your pregnancy on a day when someone else’s news is dominating the Internet. That must be why the singer and former reality star decided to finally confirm what we’ve all known for weeks—on the same day that Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries.

Jessica posted a photo of her dressed up in Egyptian garb to her personal site with the cheesy caption, It’s true! I am going to be a mummy! We could have done without the pun, but at least it’s out in the open now.

We had the exact same knee-jerk reaction that Gawker did: Choosing today ensures that the news gets buried underneath all of the reactions to Kim’s divorce, therefore saving Jess from bloggers who would criticize her for stupidly waiting so long to announce her pregnancy that she lost any chance for positive publicity and/or payment.

We weren’t about to let Jessica get away that easily. At least now we know for sure and can stop speculating on it. (And yes, it is fiance Eric Johnson‘s baby.)

It’s scary how much history is repeating itself here: A “royal wedding” (or divorce) plus a blonde who’s knocked up.

According to the New York Post, Simpson, 31, is refusing to admit she’s pregnant until she has a magazine “deal” in place (in other words, she’s willing to give someone an exclusive in exchange for a cool $500K). Not surprisingly, it’s her creepy dad-slash-manager Joe Simpson who came with the brilliant idea. Jessica Simpson Might Be Pregnant

Nick Lachey might’ve gotten remarried first, but if the rumors and “reports” are true, then Jessica Simpson beat her ex to something else: Multiple outlets say that the singer and one-time Newlyweds star might be expecting her first child.

But take this announcement with a grain of salt, since it’s coming from In Touch Weekly and not a more reputable source like People. They say that at fiancé Eric Johnson‘s 32nd birthday party recently, Jessica sent back her glass of champagne. From there, we jump to a source saying she’s already having “kooky cravings,” especially (this triggers our gag reflexes) nacho chips dipped in chocolate.

Celebitchy points to a recent blind item from Blind Gossip, posted a little over a week ago, that definitely seems to fit:

This female star has certainly had her ups and downs. Her career has gone up and down and has expanded over more than one creative medium. She has dated at least three or four famous guys, has been married to and divorced from another celebrity, and is a tabloid staple. Depending on who you talk to and which day it is, she is either gorgeous or ugly. Well, we know one thing for sure: she is pregnant! She is seven weeks along, and you should expect the announcement within the next couple of weeks. She could wait longer, but she wants to avoid the criticisms about her fluctuating weight. She thinks it will be good for people to know that she “has a baby on board, rather than a burrito on board.” Both she and her partner are very happy about the pregnancy. Oh, and they will be getting married, although the wedding will now happen after the baby is born.

The detail that most fits is “depending on the day, she’s either gorgeous or ugly”: Jess has certainly had a tough time of it in the media, getting constant criticism for her mom jeans and her fluctuating weight.

This would seem to explain the rumors that Jessica was getting cold feet and the wedding would be pushed off indefinitely, though In Touch says that she and Eric will get hitched before the baby arrives in the spring. Oh, and remember what I said about People? Celebuzz reports that the magazine is coming out with a “special pregnancy announcement” in the next few weeks. So we’ll hunker down and wait for a big announcement over Twitter or in the mag, and in the meantime scrutinize pics of Jessica like the one above.

When was the last time the Internet got so riled up over a rumor? …Oh right, the origin of Miley Cyrus‘ lingerie photo. But at least this piece of “news” is more wholesome.

Some celebrity stalkers/obsessed fans call the famous objects of their affection. Some camp out outside their mansions. Then you have Marce William Burchell, who’s never met Jessica Simpson but still decided to write a book about their alleged love affair. The title’s a doozy: The True Story of Jessica Ann Simpson’s 22 month long attempt to seduce a married man- her very Active Super Secret Sex life: True Story Jessica Simpson Seduction of A Married Man (Volume 1).

Sometimes the world just drops gifts like this into our laps.

The title’s nearly longer than the book, which is only thirty pages and is selling for $30 on Amazon. Marce has tried to get in touch with Jessica before — he’s even obtained her phone number, forcing her to change it more than once — but he must have figured that the best way to actually meet his idol was to claim that he had sex with her. Oh wait, we have that backwards; apparently he‘s the victim here.

As he told TMZ, ”This book was not written to hurt her, but was written as my only way to heal emotionally from the severe trauma and pain she put me through by her heartless cruel treatment of me.”

Back off, Marce — we’re the only ones who write celebrity fan fiction!

Camouflage is totally in this fall, say people who know things about fashion. I bet you’re dying with anticipation wondering “Liana, will you be one of the women traipsing down Broadway in a tan-and-olive overcoat?” Probably not, is the answer to your not-question! Anyway, here are a bunch of famous people who have decided that fatigues are fashionable. Weirdly, there isn’t a helmet or a machine gun in the bunch.
