One of the best things about doing this feature is that I’ve been able to catch up on pop culture references I was missing out on. And few movies are more beloved and quoted by my friends than The Goonies. Last week, when I watched Mary Poppins, I enjoyed the movie but figured that I would have liked it better had I watched it as a kid. With The Goonies I had the same fear: is it a movie you love because it’s just plain awesome, or is it a movie you love because it had major childhood nostalgia connected to it? Last week was the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, which was commemorated all over America by having the movie come out on Blu-Ray. I was very excited: Back to the Future formed most of my pre-adolescent ideas about time travel, the 50s, and making out with your mother. Today, The Goonies celebrates its own 25th anniversary Blu-Ray release, which means that a) The Goonies came out the same year as Back to the Future and b) I have made it 25 years without seeing probably the most influential adventure film of my generation. Looks like there’s a new rising star to watch: According to reports, 13-year-old actress Hailee Steinfeld will play the lead in True Grit, a Western from Joel and Ethan Coen. The movie, which is an adaptation of a novel by Charles Portis, is about a 14-year-old who recruits a U.S. marshal to track down her father’s murderer. Big names, including Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin, are already set to star in the film.

As much as we loved the cameo appearance by Gordon Gekko’s 80′s style cell phone in the first released trailer for the upcoming sequel to 1987′s Wall Street, the latest trailer to hit the Web gives us even more reasons to buy a ticket for opening day.
