Dancing With the Stars 10: Expect Changes

According to an article on BuddyTV, Dancing With the Stars’ 10th season will give us a few changes. We already saw changes last season with the addition of the “dance-off” performances each week. And last season, we had the largest group of dancers ever on a season of the show. But the ratings weren’t what the show’s producers were hoping for.

So in season 10 of DWTS, we can expect to go back to the usual 12 or so dance teams. This way, the show can comfortable air two seasons each year.

“Last season, we had some unlucky breaks with people dropping out, so we’re also looking at the casting we can get. It will be very competitive this Spring, and we’re going to step it up,” ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson added.

But there’s another change coming this season that I personally think will be a good one. No one will be eliminated until the second week. That means that the season will premiere with a 2-hour performance show the first week, then the second week there will be another 2-hour performance show and the first Results show. I like this because we will get a chance to see all of the dancers perform for us twice. I always feel a bit let down when the first pair is eliminated right out of the gate.

There’s still no word on who the new group of stars will be, but the rumors are already circulating. I’ll have the news here, as soon as we know anything.

Kym Johnson at New York Premiere

While she was in New York City doing her performances for Burn the Floor, Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Kym Johnson spent her night off attending the premiere of the Broadway revival of A Little Night Music at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

She looked spectacular and I love the necklace she wore. I found out where we can all get one like it. Here are some photos of her on the red carpet at the premiere.

DWTS & SYTYCD Stars Take Broadway Curtain Calls

During their breaks from Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, three dance stars have been doing Broadway. Mary Murphy, the sparkling and enthusiastic judge from So You Think You Can Dance and the fabulous professional dancers from Dancing With the Stars, Kym Johnson & Maksim Chmerkovskiy are seen in these photos taking a curtain call.

The three are taking part in the Broadway production of Burn the Floor, to rave reviews. They all three look spectacular! (OOPS! Something happened to poor Maks’ shirt!)

DVD Review: Dancing With the Stars: Dance Off the Pounds

As promised, here’s the first of my dance workout DVD reviews. The first one that I reviewed was Dancing With the Stars: Dance Off the Pounds, where Kym Johnson, Lacey Schwimmer & Dmitry Chaplin teach some routines for the Swing, Jive & Quickstep.

Kym starts us off with a Swing routine and she’s a terrific teacher. She explains everything very well and shows us only a couple of steps at a time so we can build up to the whole routine. The dance moves are fun, only a little challenging and since swing is my favorite style of dance to do, this section was my favorite.

Then Lacey walks us through a Jive routine. It too was easy to pick up with her excellent instructions. The moves are very similar to those of swing, so it was also a lot of fun.

Finally, Dmitry takes over to teach us some Quickstep moves. This is one of the most difficult dance styles to learn, but he takes it slowly, step by step and it wasn’t as tough as I expected. This portion of the routine is really fast, once we learn the moves in the routine, but it gets the heart pumping and is a great workout.

All three dancers take us through a stretching Cool Down section where we do simple stretches and take breaths. It felt so good after the intense dancing.

Overall, I loved the dancing and the instructions were very well done by all three dancers.

One thing I would have liked more would have been to have more interesting music. The music they chose for it wasn’t very exciting, but it does allow us to hear the instructions clearly, so it’s a trade-off.

The DVD gives us the chance to customize our workout. We can choose one, two or all of the dance portions and we get to choose whether we want to hear the instructions, or turn them off and just dance.

I loved this DVD and will definitely continue to use it. I hope you’ll enjoy it too.

Dancing With the Stars 9: A Surprising Elimination

Last night on the Dancing With the Stars results show, we got a huge surprise when Joanna Krupa was eliminated from the competition. She was ranked second on the judges’ leader board, but just didn’t get the home audience’s votes. She’s a beautiful lady and a really good dancer.

So now we know who the final three couples are in the season finale next week. Mya & Dmitry Chaplin, Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel and Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson will all go head to head for the coveted mirror ball trophy. I love all three, but expect Mya to win it.

Dancing With the Stars 9: Three Dance Routines Each!

On tonight’s performance show of Dancing With the Stars, each of the couples had to dance 3 dance routines. this week, one pair will go home and the other three will advance to next week’s finals. It’s a fantastic season and I can’t wait o see all of them!

Here’s what happened with last night’s performances:

Tango	Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson – Sadly, this routine seemed awkward and poorly executed to me. Donny just isn’t the smoldering romantic type. He was more believable as the romantic when he and judge Bruno Tonioli were joking around. I hope his next dance is stronger!	7	7	7	21

Viennese Waltz	Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough – It was beautiful, graceful and flowing, but she did seem to lift both feet off the ground once. The judges didn’t catch it, though.	9	9	9	27

Rumba	Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel – I thought it was really great! She has certainly come along way this season! She even did a really good solo within it.	8	8	8	24

Waltz	Mya & Dmitry Chaplin – There was a very definite lift in this one, but it was absolute, floating perfection. I guess lifts were allowed tonight. They didn’t mention it, though.	9	9	10	28

Samba	Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - It was fun to see them dance to one of Donny’s 70s hits, One Bad Apple! He did a really good job with it and seemed to be having a lot of fun. I don’t know if it’s enough to overcome the last dance, though.	8	9	9	26

Cha-Cha	Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough – She was terrific! It seemed without a flaw!	9	9	9	27

Quickstep	Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel – This is one of the very toughest styles of ballroom dance. She lost her footing one time, but instantly regained it. I thought she did a great job!	9	9	9	27

Dancing With the Stars 9: Performances Recap

On tonight’s performance show of Dancing With the Stars, the pairs had to do two dance routines each. They had to go head-to-head in the ballroom and in Latin dance styles and I loved it! This is the last week before the semi-finals and the competition is getting fierce.

I’m thrilled to report that my favorite commentary of all, Kenny Mayne’s Dance Center will return. Susan Boyle & Michael Buble will also perform for us. Don’t miss tomorrow’s results show!!

Here’s the rundown of last night’s performances:

Viennese Waltz	Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson – I thought he did a very nice job with the dance routine, but I can tell you that a waltz is a much easier dance style to do. But he was graceful and a good lead. It was very smooth.	9	8	9	26

’70s Samba	Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - That was great!! They not only perfectly captured the feel of the ’70s, but they did a fantastic Samba too! Fabulous!!	10	10	10	30

’90s Samba	Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff – I saw him get a bit out of sync a couple of times, but otherwise, it was really great. I didn’t see a huge ’90s feel though.	9	9	9	27

Futuristic Paso Doble	Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough – I actually don’t like paso doble…ever. But I did like this one. It was very futuristic in feel and still had the moves of the paso. She did a really good job with it!	9	10	10	29

’60s Jive	Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel – It was a very cute routine, but they were out of sync a couple times. She seems to get better each week.	8	9	9	26

’80s Paso Doble	Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - I loved Donny’s Adam Ant look! Perfect! As for the dance, there was a bit of a slip right at the end, but I loved it otherwise. (Remember, I don’t like paso doble…)	8	8	8	24

Dancing With the Stars 9: Two More Go Home

This was both a spectacular and a sad week on Dancing With the Stars for me. The dancing reached an all-season high this week, but we lost two very cool stars.

Michael Irvin was eliminated and it happened just as he got his highest scores of the season. He did a very nice job this week in his performances, but the others did too.

But it’s down to the final five after this week, so it gets tougher to lose anyone. Even though Michael wasn’t the strongest dancer all season, he brought a lot of heart to the competition. It’s no fun seeing him have to leave.

And the even sadder part for me was to see Mark Dacascos get eliminated. I’ve mentioned before that I have a bit of a crush on him, so it’s “good-bye eye candy!”

He might have been able to make it through this week, except for the string of unfortunate circumstances he had to face. Lacey schwimmer, his pro dance partner was hit with the flu bug that’s going around the cast. Mark then had to rehearse with Tony Dovolani for a while before Anna Trebunskaya stepped in to help out. Then, when he had to dance for his life, Lacey was back, but still not feeling well. It just wasn’t meant to be for Mark.

Dancing With the Stars 9: Two Go Home

On last night’s results show for Dancing With the Stars, Taylor Swift was the guest performer and sang two of her huge hits for the audience. Then they got down to business. It was a double-elimination night.

The three couples with the lowest point score combined with the audience votes were identified. It was no great surprise that the three who were in danger of going home were

Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Ballas, Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova and Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower.

The pair with the overall lowest score was eliminated immediately and that was Melissa & Mark. I was sad to see her go, because I like her as an actress. But it’s getting down to the time of the season when the talent is so good that each week is tough.

Micheal & Anna and Louie & Chelsie had to face off in a dance competition and were dancing for their lives. The judges chose the pair to send home from the two performances.

Michael and Anna went first and danced a very fun Samba routine. Michael danced better than I have seen him dance all season! Louie is going to have a tough time pulling this win out…

Then when Louie & Chelsie took the floor to perform their Jive routine, Louie just couldn’t seem to get the beat right. He seemed to be having a great time and didn’t drop Chelsie once.

The judges conferred and told Louie tht he was the next to go home. So Michael Irvin lives to dance anther day.

I really like the dance off they did. It seems a bit more fair than going just with the votes. What did you think of the two that were eliminated this week? Who do you think will be next?

Dancing With the Stars 9: Week 6 Performances

On last night’s performance show of Dancing With the Stars,

the pairs faced off doing either the Jitterbug or the Waltz. The Jitterbug is similar to the Jive, with elements of Lindy Hop and East Coast Swing. It’s enthusiastic, fast and a whole lot of fun. On the other hand, the Waltz is slow and graceful with rise and fall and the pair should almost look like they are floating. Both are very fun dances, but totally opposite in nature.

Jitterbug	Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer - I loved the performance, it was a lot of fun and his tricks were great. I did think he lost his momentum between tricks once, though. Overall, very, very good.	9	9	8	26

Waltz	Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff – He did a very nice Waltz. His moves were smooth, had good rise & fall and his technique was very good. I wonder why he has so much trouble getting audience votes…	8	9	8	25

Waltz	Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova - I think this was his best dance performance yet. He had pretty good technique and was quite graceful on the floor.	6	8	6	20

Jitterbug	Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel – I could see that Louis left some of the tougher footwork out of the routine because of her injured foot, but what was there, she did a great job with. I had fun watching it.	7	6	7	20

Jitterbug	Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower – This was easily his best dance ever! He actually danced instead of walking. His great tricks had to help him a bit too.	7	7	7	21

Waltz	Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough – It was a really nice Waltz, but she did make one very awkward move during the routine, going through Derek’s legs. I don’t feel that she is as strong a dancer as the judges have seemed to this season.	8	9	9	26
