I Give Up: They Are Making A Magazine Solely About Reality TV

The tabloid media has long cherished reality TV stars for their extreme accessibility and trainwreck-like hold on our collective attention, so it comes as no surprise that American Media (publisher of such fine periodicals as Star and Ok!) would want to take things a step further by giving them a whole damn magazine. According to The New York Times, the somewhat Orwellian-sounding Reality Weekly will report not on “reality,” per se, but the fake fights, hot bods, and untreated narcissistic personality disorders of our nation’s most fame-hungry individuals.

Unlike those unwieldy magazines of yore that were based around boring “words” and tough-to-read “sentences,” Reality Weekly will cater to America’s declining literacy rate with big, pretty pictures and not much else. “You don’t even have to read it to know what’s going on,” editor Richard Spencer told the Times. Hooray! The magazine should be a financial boon to the struggling industry, as well. In a world in which it’s tough to find even one job in publishing, a bunch of AM employees now have two! And they didn’t even have to apply! Just look at how overjoyed they are at this news:

At the office, we’ve been laughing at TheGloss’ gallery of Kim Kardashian‘s fans’ naive and impassioned messages to the reality TV star. But now we’ve hit upon an even more amazing example of the lengths that fans will go to for a star who probably doesn’t deserve their attention. And that, my friends, is Lindzine, the magazine that Lindsay Lohan‘s fans have cobbled together in honor of this failed actress/failed human being.

Lindzine is published by a fan group called The Wormholes; they’ve collected nearly 60 pages’ worth of photos of Lindsay, laser-printed and bound for only $5. It’s an eclectic group of shots: Paparazzi snaps, bikini shots, creepy Tyler Shields shoots, her many court appearances, and the few successful movies she was in.

The best example is a page like this, which juxtaposes the infamous naughty knifeplay photo with a screenshot from Mean Girls (not even an attractive one) and a shot of LiLo from the satire Underground Comedy, which isn’t even out yet.

You can buy the magazine through a site called Hamburger Eyeland; it’s been out since March, however, so it may be that they’ve sold out and need to reprint. We’re almost tempted to pick up a copy ourselves…

One of the ladies of Glee snagged a Cosmo photoshoot this month! But it’s not former magazine cover girl Lea Michele or conventionally beautiful Dianna Agron.

It’s Coach Beiste herself, Dot-Marie Jones. Coach Beiste is one of my favorite characters on Glee – she defies gender norms as a kickass football coach who also happens to wear lipstick and be a romantic. Plus, Dot-Marie Jones, despite being a talented actress, isn’t normally the kind of woman who appears in the pages of magazines like Cosmo. Though her photoshoot isn’t much of a deviation from her look on Glee (athletic gear), but it’s still nice to see a woman who doesn’t fit the normal Cosmo body ideal getting some love. Between Dot-Marie’s shoot and Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams on the cover, this has been Cosmo’s best issue in ages. I hope they keep it up instead of just putting Jessica Alba on the cover yet again.

Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Karina Smirnoff‘s Playboy cover looks remarkably like Cher’s video for “If I Could Turn Back Time.” I can only hope that the rest of her photoshoot is inspired by Lita Ford videos. Cue the glam-metal hair!

We at Crushable HQ love British soul singer Adele – her voice is so epic that you have to take notice. And while there’s a lot of pressure for women in the entertainment industry to look a certain way, Adele’s talent is more powerful than body image issues. She told the magazine, “My life is full of drama and I won’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like. I don’t like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don’t think I’d get my tits and ass out for no one. … I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.”

3. Because he knocked up a Kardashian, he gets a bunch of money to be useless on the TV

These things do not a magazine cover make. Maybe that magazine that let Michael Lohan and Bombshell McGee be on the cover, but not a real magazine that I can actually buy at a grocery store.
