Well, I suppose it is time for a Top 10–or 15–list, right? Let’s start with my Top 15 New York concerts from 2008. Of course, these are only culled from concerts that I attended so I’m sure everyone has their own list. Post yours in the comments!

Shugo Tokumaru with Impeccable Band

Shugo Tokumaru with Impeccable Band

Last night Japanese indie popster Shugo Tokumaru made his NYC debut at the Mercury Lounge. The place was packed and the anticipation was palpable. Shugo didn’t talk much, but the music was splendid. With a back band made up of Jon Natchez (Beirut), Bryan Devendorf (The National), Perrin Cloutier (Beirut), and Lawson White (So Percussion). The set was pretty short (less than an hour), but Shugo did mention that he will be back next month to play at Bowery… More »

Magnetic Fields Played Town Hall

Magnetic Fields Played Town Hall

The Magnetic Fields just wrapped up four shows at Town Hall last night. I was lucky enough to attend the Friday show and it was wonderful. Surprisingly, the group played an acoustic set, which was in direct contrast to their feedback-heavy rock-infused latest album, Distortion. It was actually really nice to hear those songs dressed down, with all of Stephen Merritt’s genius lyrics decipherable now, and of course sublime. And of course, Merritt and Claudia Gonson were in top form… More »

Magnetic Field(s)

Magnetic Field(s)

As I go off to see the illustrious Magnetic Fields tonight at Town Hall, I think we should all take a moment of silence to mourn the passing of Magnetic Field, the great club in Brooklyn on Atlantic Ave. that will be closing its doors at the end of next month. After hosting such great bands like the Black Hollies, the Black Lips, Voxtrot, Gabby Glaser, and the Ponys over the last five years, they will be sorely missed. Check… More »

Album Review: Magnetic Fields’ Distortion

Album Review: Magnetic Fields' Distortion

I finally got a chance to listen to the much awaited (by me, anyway) new album by the Magnetic Fields, one of songwriter (and local New Yorker) genius Stephin Merritt’s many incarnations. Although I’m not such a fan of the album art, the music is wonderful. True to its title, Distortion revels in feedback and fuzzy sounds. Reportedly, Merritt cited Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy as inspiration, hence the “distortion.” But don’t worry, the lyrics here are trademark Merritt, not… More »
