The Young Actresses On The Cover Of Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue Are Virtually Unrecognizable

The 1920s/art deco theme of Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood Issue cover is lovely, but it doesn’t do you much good if you can’t recognize Shailene Woodley or Elizabeth Olsen. More »

Kudos To The Hunger Games Nail Polish Folks For Coming Up With Such Creative Color Names [Updated]

The Hunger Games is following The Muppets and Pirates of the Caribbean in getting its own themed nail polish, and you know what? The colors are ones we’d actually put on our nails, and the names for each hue are really inspired. You can bet that China Glaze hired an actual fan to name these. More »

I Just Can’t Get Behind This Girl Scout Cookies Lip Balm

I Just Can't Get Behind This Girl Scout Cookies Lip Balm

I know that our former editor-in-chief Lilit has written on her love of lip balm, but I’m a strictly non-flavored kind of gal. The most I can handle is the peppermint Burt’s Bees chapstick, which is why this Girl Scout cookies-flavored set from Lip Smackers just doesn’t sit well with me. More »

Video: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Jennifer Lawrence’s X-Men Makeup

Video: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Jennifer Lawrence's X-Men Makeup

There is one thing I remember vividly from the early days of X-Men movies. It was a sound byte from John Stamos, who was at the time married to Rebecca Romijn, and it was with regard to Rebecca’s crazy blue Mystique makeup. I’m paraphrasing a bit here– it’s been years since I read that article and I’m not even entirely sure where I found it anymore– but the quote went a little something like this: “You have NO IDEA the places where I keep finding blue makeup on her after she comes home from work.” That quote alone was enough to make me never want to play a character in any kind of film, television, or theatrical pursuit that required heavy makeup or prosthetics EVER IN MY LIFE. Funny, then, that ten years later, another sound byte involving a totally different actress, but still involving the same character would drive that point home as if it had never been made before. Want to see what Jennifer Lawrence had to go through in the makeup chair in order to become Mystique in this summer’s X-Men: First Class? Check this out: More »

Snap This: Disney Eyeshadow Panoramas

Snap This: Disney Eyeshadow Panoramas

Unlike the creepy lipstick crab we featured a few weeks ago, here’s a piece of makeup art that doesn’t travel into the uncanny valley. Artist Katie Alves recreates iconic Disney settings — Snow White, Aladdin, The Nightmare Before Christmas – in the tiny space of two eyelids. My personal favorite is Tangled for the many tiny golden lanterns, but this Lion King piece is so impressive, down to the detail of Rafiki holding Simba up to the sun. More »

Gallery: Better Things to Do With Real Gold Than Fake Tattoos

Gallery: Better Things to Do With Real Gold Than Fake Tattoos

Ugh, here we were, thinking we had come up with literally the most insane thing to spend our money on (Harry Potter magic broomsticks from SkyMall that don’t even vibrate!) when the idly rich in Dubai had to go one up us. ‘Precious Skins‘ offers a new form of semi-permanent tattooing that involves putting actual gold into your skin, lasts a couple weeks, and can cost over $5k. Brilliant! I had all this money and was trying to actually burn it all but the smoke was choking me, so this is a much better solution.

However, if you are not really, really, ridiculously wealthy, here are some ways to get your skin to shimmer like gold without costing you a fortune. More »

Gallery: Lip Art Means Look, But Don't Kiss

I’m a plain chapstick and gloss girl. I’ve never understood the point of lip liner (my lips already have a shape!), or thirty different shades of essentially the same color that some girls keep. Then again, if people spent as much time working on their mouths as they did working on their silk-screen projects, maybe I’d feel differently. We’ve collected the best “lip art” we could find to show you that there are more options between “fire-engine red” and “luscious… More »

Off the Market: Experimenting With 'InStyle Ultimate Beauty Secrets'

When Crushable recieved a copy of the InStyle Ultimate Beauty Secret book, I knew that this would be the perfect opportunity to finally learn how to put on makeup. As someone who regulates herself to eyeshadow and lipstick only, I was excited to learn the art of putting on foundation, blush, and mascara like an adult. Following the tips in the book, I asked The Gloss‘ resident fashion expert Ashley Cardiff to accompany me to Sephora and guide me on my glamour process. More »
