Glee’s single-singer themed episodes have had their high points and their low points. Their version of “Toxic” in the Britney Spears episode was one of the most imaginative arrangements they’ve ever done, but the episode also gave us Rachel Berry in a button-down turned belly shirt. Likewise “Like a Prayer” was a powerful finale for the “Power of Madonna” episode, but “Like a Virgin” illustrating awkward almost hook-ups was painful to watch. Most fans probably expect the upcoming Michael Jackson hour to be the same kind of mixed bag, but if the clip of Santana and Sebastian battling it out with “Smooth Criminal” is any indication, this is going to be the best themed episode yet.

There are so many things that make this song (this song as Glee is doing it) awesome. Naya Rivera’s vocals. Dueling cellos. The intense stares of the dueling cellists. Naya Rivera’s hat. I’m keeping my fingers crossed every number in the Michael Jackson episode “Michael,” airing this Tuesday, is this well done.

Less than a month after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, Dr. Conrad Murray has been sentenced to four years in prison. In his decision, Judge Michael Pastor said that Murray engaged in “a cycle of horrible medicine,” and that he viewed it more as a “criminal homicide case” than a medical malpractice case.

Via CNN:

Jackson died “not because of an isolated one-off occurrence or incident,” Pastor said. “He died because of a totality of circumstances which are directly attributable to Dr. Murray … because of a series of decisions that Dr. Murray made.”

Murray, he said, became involved in “a cycle of horrible medicine.”

He cited Murray’s “pattern of deceit and lies. That pattern was to assist Dr. Murray.”

A tape recording of Jackson’s slurred voice was Murray’s “insurance policy,” Pastor said. “It was designed to record his patient surreptitiously at that patient’s most vulnerable point. I can’t even imagine that happening to any of us because of the horrific violation of trust.”

…In a sentencing memo filed with the judge last week, prosecutors said Murray has “displayed a complete lack of remorse” about Jackson’s death, and is, “even worse, failing to accept even the slightest level of responsibility.”

The judge’s whole speech is pretty damning:

For their part, the Jackson family had their lawyer and family friend Brian Panish read a statement on their behalf:

“We still look at each other in disbelief. Is it really possible he is gone?” Panish read. “We are not here to seek revenge, there is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back,” he continued. “But we will keep the love in our hearts that Michael embodied throughout his life. His passion was for unifying the world through… his artistry. We respectably request that you impose a sentence that reminds physicians that they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and cast aside the Hippocratic oath to do no harm. As we all know from this tragedy, doing so can have devastating results.” The statement concluded with a request for “justice.”

Earlier today, Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his patient Michael Jackson. The jury called him reckless and unprofessional for prescribing the troubled pop star sleeping pills and pumping him full of the drug propofol. Unfortunately, this sort of caretaker and/or enabler relationship is a common part of Hollywood: Doctors, parents, and hangers-on who encourage celebrities into destructive behavior and often get off clean. A guilty verdict means that the jury felt Dr. Murray, “committed a crime that posed a high risk of death or great bodily injury because of the way the act was committed or the defendant committed a lawful act, but with criminal negligence; and the defendant’s acts unlawfully cause another person’s death.” Under California law, negligence can equate manslaughter, and the verdict means that the doctor will face up to four years in prison.

When the verdict was read inside the California courthouse, fans of Michael Jackson who had gathered outside began to cheer. The trial had been going on for six weeks, over which time 33 prosecution witnesses and 16 defense witnesses were brought to the stand. Dr. Murray will serve his time in an LA County facility as opposed to a harsher state penitentiary.
