I had a chance to watch Virgin Territory this weekend. It’s much more of a comedy than I expected! Although the story revolves around the Black Plague, it’s really only lightly touched on. It’s more or less the premise for all the wild behavior in the film. And there’s a lot of wild behavior, from people of all ages!

The movie is so over-the-top in its sexuality that it becomes a comedy aspect of its own. It’s not so much a “sexual” film in the traditional sense, as the movie really plays it up. It’s basically all that’s talked about and everyone is doing it – which comes as a surprise, actually!

Under all of that, there’s an unexpected love story between Mischa Barton’s character Pampinea and Hayden Christensen’s character Lorenzo. Poor Pampinea has led a privileged life up until the plague, and now is torn trying to find a safe haven. There are two men that come to her rescue, so to speak, but neither holds her heart. She must struggle to come to terms with what she wants and with the dangers associated with that.

Mischa Barton holds strong as Pampinea – she’s not a character with a whole lot of depth, none of them are, but the role is good. There are a few solid scenes in the film between Pampinea and Lorenzo that really are quite moving, and some quite funny as well.

If I had to rate the movie out of 5 stars, I’d probably give it a 2.5 star rating. It’s an entertaining movie.
