How I Almost Hooked Up With My Fantasy Crush

When I was in high school, I had a crush on this MTV guy. I’m not going to set off his Google alert, but suffice it to say he had glasses (oh, did he ever!) and seemed like the kind of nice Jewish boy I’d like to talk about literature and the news with while snuggling. After high school, I kind of forgot about him, but when a mutual friend offered to bring me to his birthday party a few years ago (’09), I took him up on the offer.

When I arrived, my crush was rather drunk, but still charming. I shyly introduced myself. He made a self-deprecating joke about how old and lame he was, which I appreciated. He wasn’t as cute as he’d been in my high school fantasies, but he was still cute. And he still had the glasses. After that, he told our mutual friend he was “interested” and we emailed back and forth a little bit, but he kept canceling on our plans because he was busy doing impressive TV stuff. Whatever. Eventually, I gave up and began dating someone else. (Someone who was very bad for me, and to whom I wasn’t speaking by the time SXSW 2010 rolled around). Several months went by.

It was around this time that I wrote a piece about Terry Richardson that ended up becoming somewhat infamous. Immediately after I wrote the piece, I went to Austin for SXSW, so its fallout did not hit me as hard as it might have. By the last night of the festival I’d shaken off most of my paranoia that people were staring at me and gotten down to the serious business of seeing how many free Dos Equis beers my friends and I could slam at the Vice party.

I felt someone grab me from behind. Suppressing the urge to punch blindly, I turned around. It was MTV guy.

“Hey Jamie,” he said. “I liked your piece on Terry Richardson.” I wanted to ask him what he had liked about it (was it my brave stand against fashion royalty or the fact that I got naked and performed a sex act in it?) but I didn’t. “Thanks!” I replied. He went on: “You’re not afraid to sell out yourself or anyone else. That’s real journalism.” Tell me more about how dubiously awesome I am, I thought, and he continued like he’d read my mind.

I don’t really remember what we talked about, but I remember thinking it was going pretty well. We were having what I hoped was witty banter and he kept bringing me drinks, and I was twirling my hair around my fingers and laughing at his jokes. I started doing that thing girls do sometimes where they accidentally let their boobs brush up against you. (If a girl does this, fellows, she’s serious about wanting the dick.) At one point he said he thought I was “trouble” because I’m a writer and might write about him, and I just kind of smiled and said that, yes, I have been known to do that.

Dude wasn’t at all like I thought he would be. He had the cocksure swagger you probably need to have to convince people to put you on TV, and a “masculine adult New Yorker with money” taste in things like food (fancy meats) and shirts (APC?). He wasn’t nearly as nebbishy as I’d hoped, but this kind of only made me want to sleep with him more, because he’d probably throw me around and not cry afterwards.

Before MTV made beaucoup bucks off Jenelle Evans and the other Teen Moms, the most famous sixteen-year-old to get knocked up was Britney Spears‘ little sister Jamie Lynn Spears. But after the tabloid hubbub of her engagement to and breakup with babydaddy Casey Aldridge, Jamie Lynn disappeared. She’s resurfaced to write a piece for Glamour about turning 21 and how the last thing she was feeling was happiness when she announced her pregnancy with her sister and mom on the cover of OK! magazine.

Unlike fellow young mom Bristol Palin, who has hemmed and hawed over where she went wrong with birth control, Jamie bravely admits that she simply didn’t have any.

I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls… I was really scared to go to the doctor. And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn’t want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl.

The Nickelodeon kids have always been held in higher esteem than their Disney counterparts, who have drug problems and rehab stints under their belts. It’s no wonder that Jamie felt a more subtle pressure to present a wholesome image and felt that it couldn’t be publicized that she was having sex.

What’s also interesting is Jamie Lynn’s side of how she was portrayed during her pregnancy. With the big magazine announcement and her decision to keep the baby, it certainly seemed as if she were glamorizing teen pregnancy. After all, the family had been supportive of Britney having two children at the relatively young age of 24. However, Jamie Lynn apologizes here for “the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down.”

If you reread her quotes from the big announcement in 2007, you can see that even in the beginning she was more resigned than overjoyed. “I’m the one who has to live with it for the rest of my life,” she said. “I put myself in this position, an adult position, so I have to act like an adult and take responsibility for what I did.” That means ducking out of the spotlight and not exploiting daughter Maddie with a reality show or staged paparazzi shots.

However, just because she wasn’t on MTV didn’t mean that Jamie Lynn wasn’t excited to watch 16 and Pregnant and its sequel Teen Mom. “When I saw MTV’s Teen Mom was coming out,” she writes, “I remember thinking, Oh my God, I cannot wait to see this show because there’s someone else out there.” Interestingly, she doesn’t comment on any of the teen moms’ troubles with the law, or their subsequent breakups with their children’s fathers.

I definitely recommend you read the whole essay at Glamour, because there’s no bullshit about what she was going through. “I was a kid who did a kid show,” she writes. “Then I went away and raised my child, and the world has never met me as an adult.” I for one am glad to meet this adult.

Last night was the premiere of MTV‘s The Challenge: Battle of the Exes, which brings together reality alumni from The Real World and other shows… with the people they once loved/lusted after and now hate. Whether it was a relationship that simply fizzled out, one caught the other cheating on live TV, or it was all created for the cameras, there’s plenty of bitterness after these break-ups.

All that, and they have to compete for $150,000.

As one contestant observed, “There’s all sorts of exes here.” I don’t plan to keep watching this show, but I was drawn in by the different sordid histories of each pair. So, here’s your guide to keeping track of all the different on-screen relationships on The Challenge this season.

MTV Signs Off On Reunion For Fake Boy Band 2gether

Slowly but surely, fake boy band 2gether is moving toward a very real reunion! TMZ announced today that MTV has given its blessing to what was originally intended to be a parody of ’90s boy bands like *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys.

The successful joke was cut short in 2001 when one of the band’s members, Michael Cuccione, died of complications related to his Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It makes sense, then, that the project is classified as “not high priority” for MTV; however, the network was more than happy to let 2gether’s remaining members plan a reunion on their own, package it, and then present it to MTV to see if it could get picked up.

That means that 2gether will need to really rely on its fans now, since they’ll be footing the bill for writing, shootin, and editing another made-for-TV movie about the band’s adventures in the past decade. Alex Solowitz (a.k.a. Mickey Parke) seems to be the ringleader of this: It was a post on his Facebook that first got the ball rolling, and yesterday he wrote, We’re back!!! We’re going to need help from everyone when we move it’s going to take a huge group effort :) love everyone for the support!

More encouraging news comes from a local news article on bandmate Noah Bastion, who says that he’s been in contact with the other members in the past few weeks. Noah hints that they’ve come up with a few ideas, but nothing’s set in stone yet. For the most part, he’s just excited by the fans’ enthusiasm: “I swear this has to be the first time fans have taken something that was so dead and brought it back to life.”

Kardashian Relative/16 And Pregnant Star Gets Fired By MTV For Getting Knocked Up Again

Well, this is somewhat encouraging. Even though MTV gleefully makes a profit off teenagers who refuse to use birth control, the network has its limits: One rule it’s enforcing is not to support 16 and Pregnant stars who find themselves pregnant again. That was the case with one of the season 4 subjects, who is now being cut out of the season.

The detail that most interested us is that this mystery girl is apparently related to the Kardashian family, according to Teen Mom Talk, and would have gotten a double dose of attention when the season premiered. (There’s been no official air date, but fansites seem to think it’ll be April or May.)

So who could it be? We figure it’s someone with a very peripheral relationship to the Kardashians, since some sort of cousin or niece could easily be folded into Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Then again, saying someone is related to Kim, Kourtney, or Khloe could mean that she’s technically related to Bruce Jenner‘s side of the family—maybe a cousin to Brody, Kendall, or Kylie?

It’s likely that if this girl had gotten to be on season 4, her connection to the family would’ve been a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of her episode. Still, we’ll be watching the family’s Twitter feeds more closely to see if they ever mention a sixteen(ish)-year-old relative.

A source close to MTV noted that the network wants to keep 16 and Pregnant about teenagers who get pregnant by accident, not those who intentionally get knocked up in order to get the attention, and not those who decide they’re ready to give their children a little brother or sister, again expecting MTV to foot that bill. The mystery girl “is not proud of getting pregnant so soon,” but is in a relationship with the father and positive about providing for both of their kids.

She’s the second subject that MTV has had to dump; Kia Pence got booted after her brother drunkenly said some shit in the interview portion that apparently couldn’t get edited out or offended the network.

The New Punk’d Looks More Immature And Less Funny Than The Old One

Judging from this preview, MTV‘s Punk’d should’ve stayed in 2007 with Ashton Kutcher‘s obnoxious trucker hats. It’s always going to be an early-aughts treasure, and trying to revive it in 2011 with new celebrity hosts only reminds us that you can’t capture lightning in a bottle twice.

But try they will: Now, instead of Ashton targeting his celebrity pals in each meticulously-planned prank, you have half-assed nonsense conducted by Justin Bieber, Kellan Lutz, and Dax Shepard depending on the week. Signs that your show is a shadow of its former self: When Miley Cyrus is the one plotting a trick on Khloe Kardashian.

In this clip (via ONTD), Miley and Kelly Osbourne (who’s also in on the prank) invite Khloe over for a girls’ night in, but their delivery guy… needs to use the bathroom… then gets his balls stuck in his zipper. Um, OK? This is a ninth-grade prank, and a pretty lame one at that.

Here’s what made the original “punks” funny:

1) They took place in public: At Justin Timberlake‘s home, on the set of The Rock‘s new movie, in a dressing room with Eliza Dushku.

2) If the punks were true, they’d actually affect the stars’ reputations.

3) The consequences were big and in turn inspired panicked, hysterical overreactions.

By contrast, this punk looks like it’s a minor inconvenience, something that the notoriously-TMI Khloe would tweet about with a laugh during. The only way that Khloe might be worried about this would be if part of the joke was the delivery guy threatening to tweet about her being a bitch or about hooking up with her, or something that would make her look bad to her fans.

Punk’d is set to return on March 19; rumor has it that Justin Bieber just pulled a prank on Taylor Swift on New Year’s Eve a few days ago. That’s another thing—Punk’d had its heyday right before Twitter became ubiquitous among celebrities. Can MTV really hold them to non-disclosure agreements when they could just tweet “OMG Biebs totally punk’d me!!” instead and ruin the surprise?

I’m morbidly curious as to how they will sex this show up…they’re going to have to plant some serious agent provocateurs to keep each episode from being an hour of watching people eat chips and play Dungeons and Dragons. Where will they have the nerds live? And will they replace the hot tub with a tub of liquid space plasma? So many questions.

’30 Something Grandmas’ Already Has Me Sold

Teen Mom 2 is a spin-off of Teen Mom which is the second phase of 16 and Pregnant. You might think the teens procreating craze would have worn off by now, but for those of us who can’t get enough of the struggles of calculus and colic, there’s another show in the teen parent genre in development, “30 Something Grandmas.”

A casting call has been posted looking for women who get to wear I Love Grammy sweatshirts before they hit forty, and while I doubt this new show will technically be part of the Teen Mom franchise since it’s a little outside MTVs demographics, it’s the thirty something grandma’s of 16 and Pregnant that have me so excited for this show. Some have been supportive, some have stepped up to fill a parenting role, and almost all have had at least one moment on camera when they look at their expectant daughter with a palpable sadness, like they’re seeing their future limited before their eyes.

It will be interesting to see if the show gets mostly women with infant grandchildren or a mix of slightly older kids, since Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 seem to be getting a lot more interesting (and often times, sadder) as the kids get old enough to sense the drama that’s going on around them.

Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham recently posted/tweeted about the new book cover of her upcoming memoir My Teenage Dream Ended… and boy, is it underwhelming. The book is now available for pre-order on Amazon, but I don’t know who would pay even $13.32 for this shoddy Photoshop job.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but this is just awful. MTV Press couldn’t have paid whoever came up with the great Teen Mom graphics to make the cover for the network’s own tie-in book?

I have to agree with the ONTD commenters that the book is most likely ghost-written; a quick glance through Farrah’s official food blog reveals that the girl does not have the firmest grasp on grammar. “Carpone cheese,” “raspberry coolie,” and a “relatible” book? Ugh.

Farrah must think that because she has enough drama from which to pull something resembling a plot — her babydaddy Derek Underwood dying in a car crash, the abuse she received from her mom, becoming a reality star – that she doesn’t have to make any effort on the rest of the book.

We know that 16 and Pregnant star Ashley Salazar is Farrah’s competitor of sorts since she actually announced her own book, Bittersweet Blessing: 16 & Pregnant, first. So it should be no surprise that a) her cover has also been unveiled recently and b) it’s fantastic.

Interestingly, her book is also being published by MTV Press, and it’s clear that they did what I suggested—found someone who either had drawn or could imitate the 16 and Pregnant credits. I’m not going to ask whose cover is better because it’s embarrassingly obvious, so how about this…

All week at Crushable we’ll be talking about what HIV/AIDS means to you, our readers, in terms of pop culture.

In the spirit of dispelling myths and sharing knowledge, we’ve gathered up twelve different portrayals of TV and movie characters who have the disease. Some have died, others are living with it, but all taught us something about it.
