Oh Land: Great Style, Greater Music

Oh Land: Great Style, Greater Music

Nanna Oland Fabricius–who goes by the phonetic pronounciation of her middle name, Oh Land–is a musician who seems to march to the beat of her own…whatever her (oftentimes handmade) instrument of choice happens to be at any given moment. This Brooklynite by way of Copenhagen creates a truly unique blend of lush electronic music, which isn’t surprising, given her background–Mom is an opera singer and Dad is a composer and organist. Originally a ballerina, Oh Land got her start after a serious back injury prevented her from dancing, which led to songwriting, recording and ultimately becoming an incredible performer, as you can see in her video for her hit song “Son of a Gun.” We caught up with the artist at a recent exhibition and performance at the Charles Bank Gallery in New York City to talk style–both on stage and off–where she gets her insanely cool shoes, and rock star beauty tips. Read on and be sure to check out her insanely good, recently debuted self-titled album if you haven’t already. More »

Good Idea or Bad Idea: Hayley Williams on the Cover of Cosmo

Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams is on the cover of the new issue of Cosmopolitan. We think she looks great – dig the polka-dotted dress! But for a magazine that usually features stars of the traditional sex kitten variety (Jessica Alba, Olivia Wilde) on the cover, Hayley is definitely an unusual choice. More »

Valentine’s Day Experiment: The Love Playlist

Valentine's Day Experiment: The Love Playlist

As a single girl, I’m loathe to love Valentine’s Day. But whether its because I’m a hopeless romantic at heart, or because I’m a sucker for red and pink, I just can’t help but get in the holiday spirit.

A few days ago, Justin Bieber‘s “Somebody to Love” popped up on my iPod, and I had an idea. A Valentine’s Day challenge if you will. How many songs with the word “love” in them were crowding my song library? How many of them did I actually like? I went through all my songs and made a playlist with only songs with the L word in them, then edited it down for quality and repeat tracks from the same artists (the worst repeat offenders included Justin Timberlake and John Mayer). The result is a somewhat embarrassing look at my taste in music and a fun V-Day themed playlist that you can enjoy, too. If you like power ballads about broken hearts and sappy love songs. More »

Spencer Pratt Has A New Single – Hey, you guys remember Spencer Pratt?! If not, don’t worry. He’ll make sure you never forget how awful he is by singing and rapping in his new little ditty “I Got Doe.” Like a deer, a female deer? (The Hollywood Gossip)

Listen to A Preview Of Willow Smith’s New Single - It’s called “21st Century Girl,” which shouldn’t be confused with T. Rex‘s “20th Century Boy.” Because that’s a great song. (Buzzfeed)

Video: Does Pink's 'F*ckin' Perfect' Make Cutting Look Cool?

Somewhere in the middle of high school, cutting yourself became a cool thing to do. It suddenly appeared one day on the radar as something people did -no d’uh – though I remember thinking at the time that we were probably the first generation of kids ever stupid enough to put something permanent on their bodies just because we hated our parents/school/whatever. (Tattoos and piercings didn’t count of course, because they were awesome.) More »

Poll: What’s The Worst Christmas Song?

Poll: What's The Worst Christmas Song?

One good thing about the holiday being almost over is that it means an end to incessantly cheery Christmas songs. Because there are certain tunes that — as much as you want to be jolly and festive and nice — turn you into a Grinch with a vendetta against all radios. We’ve done some polling (mostly of our family, whose tastes seem to veer toward non-cutesy kids songs) and have reached a consensus as to the five most atrocious Xmas songs of all time. But which one takes the fruitcake? That’s up to you. More »

Video: These Animals Sing 'Jingle Bells!'

The funniest video I’ve ever seen was of this guy who made CDs of dog barking to the tune of your favorite Christmas songs. It’d go something like “Arf arf arf, arf arf arf, arf arf arf arf arf MEOW.” Cracked me up for hours. More »
