Even Though Stephanie Pratt Is Wearing A Diamond Ring, She Was Kidding About Being Engaged

It’s bad enough that celebrities constantly throw us off by wearing diamond rings but not actually being engaged. (I’m looking at you, Selena Gomez.) But to post a photo to your Twitter after New Year’s Eve flashing a rock, with a happy boyfriend in tow, with the caption I am still in shock!!—that’s just cruel. And that’s exactly what former The Hills star Stephanie Pratt did.

On Sunday, Stephanie tweeted the photo at left, which seems pretty cut-and-dried. (Although it should be noted that the guy, David Osokow, is someone she hasn’t really been seen with before.) And pal Lauren Conrad, who was also on the trip, tweeted congrats on your engagement! on the 2nd.

Then Stephanie made her fans look like idiots by explaining that this was obviously some convoluted joke:

omg! Friendship ring! Not engaged! I’m single! Xxoo!

NOT engaged! I’m single! @LaurenConrad has a funny sense of humor!

We have no idea why Lauren and Stephanie thought this would be so funny. In fact, it’s pretty clear that they were just looking for attention and had no other way to get it than by making fake news. (Just like on The Hills!) It wasn’t even funny like Brandi Glanville getting hitched to a friend “for fun.”

The other important thing that Lauren tweeted was her resolutions for 2012. They include sending thank-you notes, doing dinner with friends, and organizing her closet. How about doing something worthwhile to get yourself in the news?

Anderson Cooper is adorable, from his giggle attacks to his own befuddlement at his obsession with reality stars like Kate Gosselin and Courtney Stodden. He is not, however, a great actor. We can’t blame him, though, since he had to participate in perhaps the cheesiest part of the New Year’s Eve festivities: Getting kidnapped by the Green Goblin from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and having to keep a straight face.

This video is almost painful to watch; excepting the high production values, it plays like a bad tenth-grade English project where the acting is wooden and the plot is indecipherable. At least Reeve Carney is there to swoop in and throw silly string on the Green Goblin; that’s more than they could say for my high-school video project of The Scarlet Letter.

Video: Ellen Barkin Gets In A Tussle With The NYPD On New Year’s Eve

Did you know that the NYPD sometimes arrests people for no reason at all? 57-year-old actress Ellen Barkin didn’t until this past Saturday, when she witnessed one of New York’s finest arresting a young woman who did not appear to be doing anything wrong. “Walking home…13th & 6th, police making random arrests of non protesters.Young girl in police van screaming ‘I’m just trying 2 get home;”, she tweeted early yesterday morning. Being a good/foolish Samaritan, Barkin attempted to intervene and un-arrest this person, because reasoning with a cop on a power high is always safe and effective. That produced the above video (taken by her boyfriend Sam Levinson), and these tweets:

She has a point, of course, but her shock that the cops could treat someone this way is dripping with ignorance and privilege. For some, this is a daily reality. That a white woman can go 57 years without being harassed once by the cops (or even see someone else get harassed) while a young black man can’t go more than a few is utterly fucked up. A lot of people tweeted this at her, and to her credit she replied:

Let’s hope Barkin uses this as an opportunity to educate herself on the very real racism at work in stop-and-frisks and police shootings, and perhaps also the foolishness of flaunting (via Youtube) behavior that could get a younger, browner person shot fifty times.

Lindsay Lohan Actually Looked Good Ringing In 2012

You would think that New Year’s Eve would be the last situation during which Lindsay Lohan would be able to keep her cool—what with resolutions to do better next year and flowing champagne, it seems the perfect formula to wreck the starlet’s delicate cool. Imagine our surprise, then, when we came across this photo of LiLo looking relaxed and clear-eyed at an end-of-year party.

The festivities took place at John Burnham‘s house; he’s Diane Keaton‘s agent, and the party was thrown in Woody Allen‘s honor. In response to the pic, Diane tweeted at Lindsay, YOU LOOKED BEAUTIFUL LAST NIGHT.

It’s so touching to see Lindsay actually sober and looking like she’s enjoying herself. (I believe that’s Jeffrey Alan Marks from Million Dollar Decorators beside her.) Coincidentally, I caught Mean Girls this weekend and marveled at how the Lindsay of seven years ago had an apple-cheeked smile and sparkling eyes, as opposed to the wrung-out creature we were so used to.

Not to mention an endorsement from Diane Keaton! Maybe Lindsay is turning things around.

Gwyneth Paltrow knows you’re going to be partying on New Year’s Eve, so Gwyneth Paltrow has some hangover mitigation tips for you. Some of them are wildly expensive!

According to today’s GOOP newsletter, here are some of the ways you can prevent and/or cure your first massive hangover of 2012:

-Buy angel investor Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Mercy elixir” and mix a cocktail with it. Nothing prevents a hangover like drinking alcohol.

-Go to a your local full-service spa for some serious hydrotherapy. Gwyneth prefers the traditional Turkish Hamman, but even a “low-key Japanese spa” will do. Place your body in various hot saunas and cold baths. Purchase a full-body scrub. Purchase a massage. Then, skip dinner because you spent all your money.

-Eat one or two Umeboshi plums. (Note: they have the uber-pickled snack at my local natural food market, but a tiny package costs $20 so I have never purchased it.)

-Buy other products created by Gwyneth’s homeopathic expert friends.

-Drink Bloody Marys. Now we’re talking! She doesn’t call them Bloody Marys, but whatever. This is probably the worst advice of all, but the only one that’s not totally obnoxious and/or obvious, so props.

In conclusion: you are going to have a hangover no matter what bullshit hangover cure you ingest. Take comfort in the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow probably has one, too.

In case you need one more reason to avoid Times Square on New Year’s Eve, here it is: Lady “New York is my husband” Gaga will help mayor-for-life Mike Bloomberg drop the crystal adorned ball this Saturday night. I say “avoid” not because I dislike Gaga but because the place will already be a mob scene…can you imagine what it’ll be like once they throw some teeming throngs of Gaga fans into the mix? She’ll also be performing on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2012.”

For her part, the singer is stoked. “I’m so looking forward to performing on NYE+dropping the ball with Mayor Bloomberg!” she tweeted earlier today. “What an honor as a New Yorker!”

Gags will be joining the likes of Bill and Hilary Clinton, Colin Powell, and Rudy Giuliani in pushing the giant Waterford Crystal button at precisely 11:59, beginning the big, sparkly ball’s descent. Which makes me wonder: what happens if the button-pusher fucks it up? Will we be a few seconds behind for the whole of 2012? Will we have to drop it a little early next year to make up for it? It’s a good thing it probably doesn’t even really control the ball.

In a movie crammed with famous faces, the actor from New Year’s Eve we were talking about was Til Schweiger. As in, “Who the hell is that guy, and why did he make it on the big poster when Alyssa Milano didn’t?”

For one, he plays expectant father James, who’s duking it out against Seth Meyers and Jessica Biel to win $25,000 for the first baby born in 2012. For another, Til may be the odd man out, but he’s not a newbie compared to his twenty castmates. It was easy to come up with five facts since he’s had a pretty successful career. Just not necessarily in America.

1. He’s totally a big deal in Germany: He’s an actor, producer, and director who’s been in the business since 1991. According to the FFA, no other actor has drawn more German audiences to the movies.

2. He’s won two Bambi awards, Germany’s oldest media award for visionary and inspiring works. (And yes, it’s based on the famous fawn.) Other recipients include Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet.

3. But he’s not well-known only outside of the U.S.: Til has appeared in many recent American films, including King Arthur, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, and Inglourious Basterds. His latest project is the comedy This Means War, which stars Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as spies dueling for the affection of Reese Witherspoon.

4. He turned down the chance to be in Saving Private Ryan because he worried that the role, a German soldier who shoots Tom Hanks‘ character, would give Americans an enduring bad image of him.

5. Some sites call Til “the German Brad Pitt” for his rugged looks. It’s also his birthday today! He’s 48.

Chick Flick Check List: New Year’s Eve

Gary Marshall‘s new celebrity montage movie New Year’s Eve is basically an extended infomercial for Mike Bloomberg‘s Times Square. The movie contains more celebrities than Jason Sudeikis‘ bed during SNL‘s off season. Depending on your feelings for weird celebrity pairings, you will either ignore this movie, go see it with your girlfriends, or confuse it for Valentines Day and accidentally watch it on cable for 20 minutes a year from now.

And that’s OK with Gary Marshall, who these days seems more interested in how many people (and family members) he can fit into a film than actually creating a coherent plot line or emotional tension. But should you hate watch this movie or skip it? Check out today’s Chick Flick Check List to find out.

New Year’s Eve’s Chick Flick Check List Rating: 66

Likability of the lead: 5/10
No one’s really on screen long enough for the audience to develop any sincere feelings about their struggles and story arc. Also, this movie has a built in self-destruct time of midnight. Since you know everything will get sorted out by then, it’s more a countdown to see which celebrities will make out with whom.

Chemistry Between The Leads: 5/10
It’s hard to develop any sort of chemistry with your scene partner when you’ve got 2.5 minutes of the audience’s attention at a clip. Though New Year’s Eve does a good job keeping Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron on screen long enough to give you hope that he will her a Breakfast Club-esque makeover and introduce her to everyone on his wrestling team. Unfortunately, Molly Ringwald never shows up to give her a lesson in lip gloss application. Downer.

Plot/Script: 5/10
There are so many people in this movie that a few of them have to shoulder their way into actually having speaking parts. Not only did Alyssa Milano, Sarah Paulson and Carla Giugino get shafted from the poster, but Greg Kinnear never even made it into the final cut of the movie. There are a lot of moments that are hastily thrown together. And Marshall doesn’t even worry about it. When you have this many people in a movie, you don’t need montages to get the plot moving. You just literally make the actors run through the screen to get their story lines tied up before the closing credits.

Chance of wringing tears out of viewers: 6/10
Halle Berry gets a little teary eyed moment, and Robert DeNiro plays a cancer patient! If you’re an easy cryer, they might get a few drops out of you. But there’s not enough time to pay attention to anyone in particular to care too much.

Wardrobe: 8/10
There are plenty of hot dresses and sequins and tuxedos in this movie to keep everyone entertained. And depending on your feelings about Sophia Vergara‘s breasts, you will either get a pleasant or unpleasant surprise towards the end of the movie.

The Second New Year’s Eve Trailer Makes The Movie Look Even Cheesier Than Before

What’s new about the second New Year’s Eve trailer:

Abigail Breslin is Sarah Jessica Parker‘s daughter, which means SJP doesn’t seem like the sad sack costume designer she was portrayed as in the first trailer.
Jon Bon Jovi definitely plays a rock star: he’s performing on New Year’s Eve, Sofia Vergara is one of his handlers, and Katherine Heigl is apparently the normal girl he dumped.
The most implausible plotline: The first baby born in the New Year will receive $25,000. Is it because we’re all going to die in 2012? It does, however, explain why Jessica Biel and Seth Meyers sound so fucking smug when they say, “Oh, is it New Year’s?”

What’s the same:

Ashton Kutcher is moping… about what? Contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t play the same character from Valentine’s Day. In fact, he seems to be doing the opposite: His old character Reed Bennett was disgustingly optimistic, while “Randy” sulks and hates anything New Year’s. Ah well, gotta have one in every bunch.
We still don’t know what Hilary Swank does, only that it includes scattering confetti and paper from the rooftops.
The identity of Josh Duhamel‘s dream girl is going to remain a mystery; it’ll be the “Who is Julia Roberts going home to for Valentine’s Day?” of New Year’s Eve.

Do I want to see this movie any more than I did before? Not really.

Also, the studio decided to jump the gun and release it on December 9. So even if it’s OK, we’ll be all hyped up about New Year’s three weeks before it happens.
