Nickelodeon Star Jamie Lynn Spears Was Afraid To Ask For Birth Control

Our 5 Favorite Quotes From The Pete & Pete Reunion

Our 5 Favorite Quotes From The Pete & Pete Reunion

One of the most memorable Nickelodeon shows from the ’90s was The Adventures of Pete & Pete, about two redheaded brothers with the same name, their mom with a plate in their head, and the world’s strongest man, Artie. Pete & Pete made it into Nick’s The ’90s Are All That resurrection on TeenNick, but here’s another treat: The cast and crew of the show had a mini reunion at LA’s Cinefamily last weekend! More »

Among other things! She also calls out Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers. (Apparently Selena Gomez is really nice, though.) More »

Nickelodeon Is Basically Remaking Beatles Movies Starring Their Boy Band Big Time Rush

Nickelodeon Is Basically Remaking Beatles Movies Starring Their Boy Band Big Time Rush

It may sound a bit hyperbolic, but I believe that (pre)teens today love boy bands like the Jonas Brothers as much as my parents’ generation revered the Beatles, so it’s not so surprising that Nickelodeon is casting its in-house band Big Time Rush as the Beatles’ descendants. The network has decided that the band’s first TV movie, Big Time Movie, will cover several Beatles hits as well as emulate the plots of their wacky adventure movies from the ’60s. More »

Ever Wanted To Know What’s In Nickelodeon’s Double Dare Slime?

Ever Wanted To Know What's In Nickelodeon's Double Dare Slime?

Green slime: It’s the tenet of Nickelodeon‘s ’90s game-show programming, a mixture of punishment (if you answered a question wrong) and reward (winners of the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards regularly got slimed). When I was 12, my parents pulled some strings and got my sister and me in behind-the-scenes at the Nick studios in Florida. We flipped a coin to see which of us would get slimed, and she got that honor. I was so jealous. More »

Friends Being on Nick at Nite Makes Us Feel Horribly Old

Friends Being on Nick at Nite Makes Us Feel Horribly Old

Growing up, we watched Nick at Nite as a portal into the past: Block Party Summer featured such black-and-white classics as I Love Lucy and The Monkees. But do you know what the newest show to go into this weird retirement/syndication is? Friends! Yes, the sitcom that ended less than a decade ago, in 2004.

Nick at Nite has always been an indicator of age, so we’re pretty shaken up by the show we grew up with in high school and college suddenly being considered a golden oldie. More »

The 8 Best Quotes from Blue’s Clues Host Steve’s Storytelling Night at The Moth

The 8 Best Quotes from Blue's Clues Host Steve's Storytelling Night at The Moth

The urban legends say that childhood icon Steve Burns abruptly stopped hosting Nick Jr. show Blue’s Clues because he’d died in a car accident, or overdosed on drugs, or committed suicide. We’re excited to report that Steve is alive and well (though bald) and telling stories about his “fameishness” at The Moth, an NYC non-profit that holds open storytelling nights. He’s just as sardonic and self-effacing as Animorphs author K.A. Applegate when she did a Q&A on Reddit. Here are the eight quotes that had us laughing in disbelief. More »

Exclusive: 10 Probable Reasons Why Nickelodeon Banned ‘Cry Baby Lane’

Exclusive: 10 Probable Reasons Why Nickelodeon Banned 'Cry Baby Lane'

On October 28, 2000, Nickelodeon aired an original movie as part of its seasonal Halloween SNICK line-up. Based on an old Ohio urban legend, the movie was called Cry Baby Lane. But after its initial airing, Nickelodeon was hit by an onslaught of parental complaints deeming the movie far too disturbing for a children’s network. The film was buried: It was never re-aired, and it was never released on video or DVD. But never fear! We here at Crushable managed to get our hands on a copy. As we sat down to watch it, we had only one question: Just what about it was so awful to result in Cry Baby Lane being banned? Sit back and make yourselves comfortable, because have we got some theories for you! (SPOILERS, of course.) More »

Is ‘Doug’ the Original Hipster?

Is 'Doug' the Original Hipster?

I have fond memories of Doug. Of the three original Nicktoons, it was by far my favorite, and I know I’m not alone in my love of green sweater-vests. But I’ll admit, I do frequently wonder: Is Doug the original hipster? Is he, in fact, responsible for an entire generation of hipsters? Maybe. Let’s take a look at the evidence, shall we? More »

Why Nickelodeon Needs to Bring Back ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’

Why Nickelodeon Needs to Bring Back 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?'

This morning’s Nickelodeon ad featuring Kenan Thompson gave me a fresh wave of nostalgia for ’90s Nick shows like The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Clarissa Explains It All. But you know which show isn’t on the list? Are You Afraid of the Dark?, only the creepiest show of our childhoods, scarier than Goosebumps. (Yeah, R.L. Stine, what up.)

Nickelodeon seems to have chosen shows that lean toward comedy to be part of its “The ’90s Are All That!” lineup on TeenNick, and while it’ll be fun to revisit Pierre Escargot and Vital Information for Your Everyday Life, we may not be able to stomach multiple viewings of these. That’s why they should branch out and include a show like Are You Afraid of the Dark?: It’s the rare program that can hold up because we’ll have two very different experiences with it. We were terrified of the creatures and spells when we were seven — how could you not be, with the many episodes shot in dark forests? — but now the stories are delightfully campy. More »

Kenan Thompson Is the Only ’90s Alum Nickelodeon Can Call On for Ads

Kenan Thompson Is the Only '90s Alum Nickelodeon Can Call On for Ads

Nickelodeon stars from All That and Clarissa Explains It All managed to keep a career going after they flew the nest, but Kenan Thompson seems to be the only one who’s kept in touch with the parent company. He recently guest-starred as himself on Victorious, and now he’s sitting on a big orange couch to promote the upcoming reruns of those ’90s shows. The commercial has him trying to record a Nickelodeon commercial — look, Nick’s gone meta! — only for the crew to keep interrupting him with questions about the behind-the-scenes life on the shows. Interview: Nickelodeon Star Liz Gillies on the ‘iParty with Victorious’ Crossover

Interview: Nickelodeon Star Liz Gillies on the 'iParty with Victorious' Crossover

This weekend, Nickelodeon unites its two major shows, iCarly and Victorious, in a 90-minute TV special called iParty with Victorious. In the crossover, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) and Tori (Victoria Justice) discover that they’re dating the same guy; when Carly and her pals head down to L.A. to catch the cheating boyfriend in the act, the Hollywood Arts kids get to meet the stars of their favorite webshow. Oh, and Nick alum Kenan Thompson shows up playing himself.

Earlier this week, we chatted with Victorious star Liz Gillies, who plays mean girl Jade, about getting to know the iCarly cast better and whether the 17-year-old will get to attend a non-TV prom. More »

Prom Flick Check List: ‘Victorious’

Prom Flick Check List: 'Victorious'

We’re nearing the end of prom season, but there’s at least one more TV show that took a stab at the most revered of high school events: Nickelodeon’s Victorious had an episode last weekend called “Prom Wrecker,” in which Tori’s (Victoria Justice) big dance threatened to upstage Jade’s (Liz Gillies) one-woman show. Let’s see if the whole episode made the grade.

7 Notable TV Crossovers

7 Notable TV Crossovers

When we interviewed Liz Gillies at the Victorious press junket, she mentioned that her show would be doing a crossover with Nickelodeon’s other big earner, iCarly, called iParty with Victorious: “It’s wild and fun, and there’s a really cool guest star.” With the special airing on June 11, Nick just released a behind-the-scenes video of stars Miranda Cosgrove and Victoria Justice, plus their respective casts, performing a mash-up of their theme songs. Yep, they take the idea of a TV crossover very seriously. Oh, and Kenan Thompson is gonna be on it. More »

After completing three months at a rehab facility to treat her cutting issues and eating disorder last year, Disney starlet Demi Lovato has announced that she is leaving her show, Sonny with a Chance. “I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery,” she said in a recent interview. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.” More »

Classic Nickelodeon Show 'Hey Dude' Is Finally Getting Released on DVD

Last month, the TeenNick channel announced that they were going to re-air some classic ’90s Nick shows including Are You Afraid of the Dark and The Adventures of Pete and Pete. But that wasn’t enough for some hardcore ’90s Nick fans (like me!), who are also jonesing for other shows like Roundhouse and Salute Your Shorts. Good news, though – today, Nickelodeon announced that Hey Dude, the show that introduced the world to Christine Taylor and a girl named Brad, will finally come out on DVD on July 19. More »

Miranda Cosgrove and Other Nickelodeon Stars Appear in Anti-Bullying PSAs

Remember Nickelodeon’s The Big Help, the do-good specials that had All That stars volunteer to help kids refurbish their local parks? Over the years, it’s changed as needed, adapting its content to match events like 9/11 or the threat of global warming. This year, its focus is on teen bullying. More »
