As part of her healthier eating initiative, Michelle Obama unveiled the new nutritional design that’s replaced the FDA food pyramid: MyPlate, a circular dish split into four portions for fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein, with a bowl-like dairy portion on the side. Interestingly, Obama is not the only celebrity chattering about food today.

Blake Lively was profiled by bff Florence Welch for Glamour, where the singer asked Lively her rules for getting ready for swanky events. In addition to working as her own stylist, Lively makes sure she’s properly fed:

And my diet of choice before events is a chicken potpie from Tea & Sympathy, because they never have enough food at these things.

This seems a bit like the “lady doth protest too much” we see with skinny actresses boasting that they have huge appetites. Because can you really sustain a rockin’ bod like hers on perpetual potpies? Still, I read it as a dig at Hollywood for not providing more grub at its parties.

Then there was Hugh Jackman, who had by far the most fascinating quote I’ve read today. Discussing whether celebrities’ appreciation for good food was simply trendy, he confessed,

I don’t know if it’s cool or not, or trendy or whatever, but I’ve always been a foodie. I remember when I was young, the only thing I ever dreamed of — it wasn’t cars or houses or trips — the only thing I wanted money for was to be able to walk into any restaurant I wanted and order anything off the menu, without having to worry about it. Careful what you wish for, I guess!

He’s not kidding; celebrities have their pick of the best foods and chefs, whether or not they have the tastebuds for it. And while both Lively and Jackman seem to reference situations where people don’t have enough food, Michelle Obama’s initiative is aimed at the opposite: Battling obesity by encouraging more reasonable and varied portions. It’s an interesting look at both sides of the food debate.

Yesterday evening I went on a quest to find one of Urban Outfitters ‘Eat Less’ shirts that got so much press last week for basically being super offensive. Sure, if the shirt was part of some sort of anti-obesity campaign, then that might be more acceptable. But we’re talking about a fashion statement here, from a clothing store that sells hipster dresses that usually run in sizes from small to extra-small. Huffington Post said the website had taken down the page where you could buy the shirt online, but it was still available at some new york retailers. Turns out that’s not really the case.

First though, let’s address what you thought about the “Eat Less” message: When we asked readers last week if they’d ever wear a shirt like that, 50 percent of you replied abso-friggin-lutely not (and that you didn’t need a skinny model telling you to eat less, thankyouverymuch). The other half of you guys were split down the middle: 25 percent said that they’d wear it because it’s not a personal insult to anyone, and the other 25 percent rolled their eyes at the entire concept at paying $26 for a tee shirt, so found the entire question irrelevant.

But back to my vision quest: After three stops at the major Urban Outfitters in the city, I’m convinced that we’re either dealing with a major cover-up about the existence of these shirts, or the salespeople at Urban Outfitters are too busy DJ-ing on their nights off to pay attention to their inventory. At every store I went to (East Village, NoHo, and 6th avenue), not only did the staff have no idea what shirt I was talking about, they looked slightly mortified that I was asking about a piece of clothing with that slogan on it.

“Eat less…what’s that supposed to mean? Is it for guys?” one confused model-esque employee asked, looking at me like most people look at people with giant swastikas on their forehead.

“Um, no … I wanted one because it’s been in the press a lot? And I heard you guys still have them? And they aren’t online anymore?” Yes, when I get nervous, every statement turns into a question. This process repeated itself two more times, almost verbatim (sometimes they’d direct me to the “graphic tee” section of the store, so I could go try to explain this to another horrified salesperson) before I gave up. If the inventory of “Eat Less” shirts did arrive to many of the New York stores, they never made it to the racks, or at least not long enough for their own staff to find out about it. Which, considering how so many people feel about it, is probably for the best.
