In Monte Carlo, the new Selena Gomez movie, Miss Gomez plays a young Texan who bears a striking resemblance to a wealthy heiress. When a hotel manager mistakes her for Ms Richie Rich, she and her friends (well, stepsister and friend) decide to go with it; hijinks in designer dresses ensue. Plot sound familiar? Even if you’re not ready to sign on for an hour and half of the Biebette’s European adventure, you’ve probably caught a mistaken identity flick at one time or another.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are actually 24 years old, though from looking at them you might assume they’re a pair of twins in their 80s. They’re like a couple of wealthy Upper East Side eccentrics who stroll about in the afternoon with their bejeweled Affenpinscher puppies named Rotunda and Princess Penelope, stopping to have tea with members of the Bouvier family on Persian rugs on the steps of the Met. Old, old, old!

Notes From Sundance: Get Ready For The Olsen Twins’ Sister Elizabeth

The 21-year-old sister of Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen is getting a lot of attention this week at Sundance. Because she appears in two movies at the festival – and she’s actually good. Get familiar with the name Elizabeth Olsen. Because you’re going to be hearing it a lot this year.

Elizabeth is the younger sister of the Olsen twins, and until now has avoided the spotlight. But she is appearing in two films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. She shines in Silent House, a horror movie that’s getting mixed reviews, about a family that returns to their house to find it haunted. But the role that’s really making people pay attention is her leading role in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Elizabeth plays a young woman who has trouble integrating back into society after taking up with a cult.

Martha Marcy May Marlene was purchased by Fox Searchlight this week, meaning you’ll see it in theaters this year. Just yesterday, Liddell Entertainment purchased Silent House. And Elizabeth has just chosen her next role. She’ll soon star in Buried director Rodrigo Cortes‘ Red Lights. In that film, a “thriller about paranormal activity,” she’ll be joining Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy.

Elizabeth has pretty much avoided joining her sisters as tabloid fodder. But she wants to be an actress, and in this case, their paparazzi fame has been a huge boon for her.

It’s both unfair and impossible to avoid mentioning Olsen’s siblings are Mary-Kate and Ashley, if only to give context. There’s a sort of gross and guilty undercurrent of surprise that not only do they have another sister, but that she’s an actress, and a very talented one to boot. In fact, that was pretty much my reaction, and it’s not something I’m particularly proud of, though I’m no less delighted to have another whipsmart starlet on the horizon.

Is that… could it be… a rare sighting of the mythical two-headed Olsen creature? Mary-Kate and Ashley were spotted at an event for Women’s Wear Daily wearing matching black furs. They even styled their hair and makeup exactly alike — just like old times! Though the wooly outerwear is a bit of a far cry from the matching pink onesies they wore as toddlers. Guess that’s what growing up means.

The Tao Of Mary-Kate: I Put Fashion First

Mary-Kate Olsen‘s movie career takes a backseat to her real true love: Fashion. But as MK obsessives like us know, she is a walking bohemian-circus masterpiece of style. She tells Marie Claire (via Wonderwall): “It took us a year-and-a-half to make the first T-shirt. I still read scripts, and if something great comes along, that’s great, but this is my day job. The Row is where I go every day.” Really? That’s not what we hear. According to a Crushable source, MK’s business-oriented sister Ashley is a daily fixture in their fashion label’s office; MK, on the other hand, visits with less frequency. Then again, she’s waaaaay too busy starring in these home movies.

Spotted: An Olsen Gossips About Money!

The Olsens are so rich, do they even understand the concept of money? You’d think not! A Crushable tipster spotted “one of the olsens” – presumably Mary-Kate - walking through New York City’s West Village, “chatting with her friend about how much someone was making.” She was, our tipster reports, “Wearing an insane onesie with hammer pants and leopard print.”

So yes, we’ll go with MK. Even though Ashley is the astute businesswoman in the dynamic!

Memoir: When You’re 4 Foot 10 Inches Tall, Shopping Can Be Painful

I once owned the perfect pair of jeans: blue boot-cut LEIs. They weren’t fancy, but they were comfortable, made my butt look good and above all, required no alterations.

This may not seem like a big deal, but when you’re 4’10’’ one gets used to visiting the tailor before wearing new clothes. It was the first and only time I’ve taken pants home to wear the next day, no pinning, taping or sewing required.

As a little person, I spent a few too many years donning clothes my younger sisters had outgrown and wearing holes in the bottom of pant legs for lack of understanding the importance of a good tailor. I’d like to forget my time shopping at the Limited Too well past an acceptable age. My prom shoes had bows.

Shopping as a short teenager was not easy. It’s easier as an adult, but comes with its own complications.

It’s hard to buy clothing as-is, for one. “Petite” and “short” labels don’t work for everyone and require some alteration. Petite sections are inconsistent from place to place. Certain styles, no matter how appealing, are just not going to happen.

I can get over never wearing a maxi-dress or a voluminous skirt. If those don’t work for me, something else will. I don’t even really mind the inconsistency of petite offerings from store to store.

What does irk is the inability to, say, buy a pair of pants on a Saturday shopping trip and wear them that night. It also hurts to add $10-$20 to each purchase for alterations.

It’s not all bad. Most dresses and skirts fit just fine, no matter if they’re regular or petite. You can also avoid certain trends, like that baggy-short-with-boots look that was going around a few years back. Great on Gisele. Not so much for the rest of us.

Some tips (if you, like me, don’t have an Olsen-style budget, closet and pocket tailor):

Find a good place for alterations. This can be your corner dry cleaner or a place dedicated solely to tailoring. Start with something small, like a pair of pants, and see if you’re happy with the results. Most of the time, the dry cleaner works, but for more complicated garments like bridesmaid dresses and, I use a tailor.

Ask if they’ll use the original hem on jeans. It’s a bit more expensive, but I’ve found that keeping the original hem in place looks and holds up better than fashioning a new one.

Remember to bring the shoes you’ll wear most often with pants. If you’re a heels girl, bring them with you! The flip flops you wear to run errands do not make a good marker for pant length. Guessing does no good.

When shopping, don’t stick to the petite section. They can be great, but some can be limiting. You’re also missing out on a chance to find new uses for clothes. Capris meant for an average height person could make great alteration-free pants. My floor-length prom dress was designed for tea-length.

That said, if there’s a particular store or brand you like, visit early and often.
