Today’s Controversy Of The Day was sparked by Lainey Gossip, a blogger we love, who is covering the celebrity scene at the Olympics.

Dear American celebrities in Vancouver,

We know you’re having fun at the Olympics and all, and the Vancouver gift suites are totally hooking you up, but news flash: You aren’t Canadian. Take off that admittedly slick-looking jacket, you traitor! Who cares if the Canadians are welcoming hosts, plying you with warm beverages and maple-flavored treats (this is what we imagine Canadians eat), giving you directions, saying “eh,” and being overall a warm, congenial people. Everybody’s patriotic around Olympics time, and you, sirs, are repping the wrong country.

Think you can fly under the radar? We see you, Glee stars. Corey Monteith gets a pass because he is, in fact, from the Great White North. But Mark Salling, take off that Canada jacket. You’re from Texas. Ditto to you, Kevin McHale.

Jon Hamm, you might be showing support for your Canadian prisoner buddy Michael Buble, but you’re from St. Louis. You should be wearing red, white, and blue, not just red and white. (Though thank you for not wearing your Canada swag at the USA-Canada men’s hockey game. That would just be unforgivable.)

So shape up, traitors, and start supporting your country (for the rest of the Olympics, anyway).

Glad we could clear this up,

Crushable

P.S. Here at Crushable, we root for Canada because our boss is Canadian. So feel free to send your swag this way.

We’ve navigated the upcoming release calendars in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. On deck this week are Daniel Merriweather’s album Love & War, The September Issue on DVD, Olympic figure skating, and the new police comedy, Cop Out.

Music:

Daniel Merriweather’s Love & War finally gets a Stateside release on Tuesday. You might recognize the soulful Aussie from Mark Ronson’s “Stop Me,” a cover of The Smiths’ song “Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before” that appeared on Mark’s album, Version. Several famous faces appear on Love & War, which was produced by Mark, including last year’s Best New Artist Grammy winner Adele, rapper Wale, and Sean Lennon.

Movies:

You could opt for Cop Out, the Tracy Morgan/Bruce Willis buddy cop movie formerly titled A Couple of Dicks. The hilarity of the red band trailer made up for the so-so jokes in the first one — it more accurately portrays director Kevin Smith’s raunchy sense of humor. Bonus: The O.C.’s Adam Brody is in it!

Other options: You could see The Crazies. Because it’s called The Crazies. We’re not exactly sure what it’s about. Do you really care, though?

TV:

If keeping up with the Olympics isn’t your thing, BBC America will begin airing the second season of the critically acclaimed British comedy The Inbetweeners, about the pains of teenage life, on Wednesday. Ah, the awkwardness of adolescence — we can all relate.

If keeping up with the Olympics is your thing, the ladies’ figure skating medals will be handed out on Thursday night. Highlights for the rest of the week include various ski events. (Do you know how many ski events there are? A lot. More than we ever knew existed.)

DVD:

We loved The September Issue when it was in theaters, so we’re glad it’s finally getting a DVD release tomorrow. The documentary follows Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and creative director Grace Coddington as they prepare the mammoth September 2007 fashion issue. We want to take the day off to watch The September Issue on continuous loop, if only to re-watch Grace steal the show and Anna in her icy element.

Last night, 24-year-old Evan Lysacek became the first American man to win a gold medal in figure skating since Brian Boitano in 1988. Although Evan is the reigning World Champion, he was not a lock to win at the Olympics. Russian skater Evgeni “Plushy” Plushenko, known for both his perma-mullet and his ability to do quadruple jumps without breaking a sweat, did a Brett Favre-style un-retirement and was the favorite to win in Vancouver.

Plushy won a gold medal four years ago in Turin and was hoping to become the first man to win back-to-back skating golds since Dick Button won in 1948 and 1952. Before the Olympics, he gave several interviews stating that he did not think it would be possible for any skater to win without doing a quad jump. However, under the new scoring system (created after a judging scandal in the pairs event in Salt Lake City resulted in a Canadian pair getting co-gold medals and a public apology from the International Olympic Committee), Evan’s triple-triple jump combination was worth almost the same number of points as Plushenko’s quad, and the American was stronger than the Russian in his marks for footwork, transitions, and artistry.

Besides the fact that he’s a newly minted gold medalist, what do we know about Evan Lysacek? Well, like any good skater, he comes with some melodrama. He and teammate/reality star Johnny Weir are longtime rivals, and Lysacek’s recent breakup with ice dancer Tanith Belbin resulted in her choosing to be roommates with Weir in the Olympic village in Vancouver. Don’t cry for Evan, though — he’s reportedly dating gymnast Nastia Liukin, who won the all-around gold medal at the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing. Clearly, the man has a type. So if you happen to be a beautiful, blonde Olympian this is your chance!

Now that he has won his sport’s highest honor, what will Evan do next? He could decide to remain an amateur skater and try for another medal at the next winter Olympics (which, coincidentally, will be held in Sochi, Russia). If he chooses to leave competitive skating, he could follow many fellow ex-Olympians and join one of the national skating tours, like Stars On Ice. But it sounds like he might have some non-skating ambitions, as well. Evan recently told People magazine that when he’s not training he lives in Los Angeles and goes clubbing with celebrity friends like Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe, and that he has considered pursuing acting. Judging by how bright orange his skin was last night, it also seems that Evan could potentially be a Jersey Shore fan, or at least he goes to the same tanning salon as Snooki.

Might we offer a suggestion? Just as Evan followed Brian Boitano to the medal podium, perhaps he could also follow Boitano to the Food Network? Or maybe South Park could immortalize him in song (what rhymes with “Lysacek”?). Either way, we look forward to seeing what this golden boy does next, and congratulate him on his win.

Whether they win gold, silver, bronze — or miss the medal stand completely — there’s no denying Olympic athletes are fine specimens of the human form. That’s what happens when you are the best in the world at something, and that something is some sort of Olympic sport. But although all of the Olympic athletes have fit bodies (except maybe some weight lifters who find benefit in being hefty or curlers who, let’s face it, don’t do much at all) not all of them are cute-in-the-face. So we combed through the roster of 2010 Winter Olympians to find the hottest hotties who are hanging in Vancouver right now.

There was plenty of inspirational television to choose from last night with the second half of the American Idol top 24 finally announced and Shaun White defying laws of gravity at the Olympics. But what did America choose to tune in to? Surprisingly, Idol did not win the night. It’s strange to think that a worldwide sports competition that only occurs every four years can be the underdog, but thanks to American Idol’s consistently massive ratings, the Olympics were not supposed to win. According to a statement from NBC, it was the first time in six years that Idol had not beaten its competitors. Tuesday night went to Idol (as expected).

Does this mean that Americans just couldn’t take their eyes off the halfpipe, or does it mean something more sinister about the future of American Idol? Help Crushable find out. Where did you direct your TV-watching energies last night? Vote in our handy poll below.

Attention pairs figure skating aficionados who are kinda bummed that the Vancouver Olympic medals have already been handed out (there must be some of you out there): ABC Family will air the third unnecessary sequel in the Cutting Edge franchise next month, entitled The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice. This one is already shaping up to be better than the two previous superfluous installments (though obviously not better than the original) simply because it contains an ice-related pun. Also because it means Brendan Fehr formerly of Roswell is employed.

Puns and a WB drama vet? Clearly we’ll be watching. Here’s the plot lowdown: Francia Raisa (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) plays a figure skater looking for a new partner, which she presumably will find in Brendan’s “smoldering bad boy of speed skating” James McKinsey. Hopefully the romance element is played down because Francia is 11 years younger than Brendan in real life and that’s still a little icky since she’s just barely out of her teens.

In honor of the made-for-TV movie, which airs on March 14, we’ve brainstormed several alternate titles for the third sequel. Feel free to add your own suggestions/cold weather-related puns in the comments. And ABC Family, if you’re reading, feel free to co-opt one of these for the inevitable Cutting Edge 5.

The Cutting Edge: Hey, You People Keep Watching These Things
The Cutting Edge: Toe Pick
The Cutting Edge: I’m Getting Too Old For This
The Cutting Edge: Capitalizing on the Winter Olympics
The Cutting Edge: Because You Weren’t Born When the First One Came Out
The Cutting Edge: Cold as Ice
The Cutting Edge: Snow Worries
The Cutting Edge: The Big Chill
The Cutting Edge: Eh, Why Not?

So we’re hearing a lot about Nikki Yanofsky, the 16-year-old Canadian jazzy-pop singer who performed at last Friday’s Olympic Opening Ceremony.

And if we do say so ourselves, she’s very very good. Maybe Second Coming of Celine Dion good. So good, in fact, that she warranted an Oprah mention. (On her show last week, Oprah may or may not have glowingly bellowed something to the effect of “Nikki Yanof-SKYYYYYY!!!!).

Is Nikki the next Celine? Alanis? Sarah McLachlan? Michael Buble?

Without further ado, here’s the stuff you oughta know:

She’s a class act. She could drop out of school and go straight to Hollywood, if she really wanted to. But Nikki intends to graduate from St. George’s School of Montreal in 2011, after she turns 17.

She may be young, but she’s an old pro. Nikki is causing a stir for “I Believe,” the Vancouver Olympics theme song, but her star began rising in 2006. She was the youngest-ever headliner at Montreal’s International Jazz Festival. In 2008, she performed at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center, among other prestigious arenas.

She’s got pop-music cred. She has recorded songs with Herbie Hancock and Will.i.am, not to mention the track “Gotta Go My Own Way” for “High School Musical 2.” Did we mention she once sung alongside Celine Dion? And…

…she’ll release her first studio album in spring. It’s called “New to Me,” which, based on the title, sounds like an homage to Norah Jones‘ “Come Away With Me.” But we overthink.

She has a huge crush on Robert Pattinson. Shocking, we know.

Here’s a clip of Nikki singing “I Believe”:
