Diplo and Switch at Other Music Tonight

DJs Diplo and Switch have a collaboration going, under the moniker Major Lazer. The two will be at Other Music (15 E. 4th St. in Manhattan) tonight (Monday June 15), performing and signing copies of their new album Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do, which comes out tomorrow (June 16). Last summer, Japanese geniuses the Boredoms joined together with 77 drummers under the Brookyln Bridge to play a 77-minute composition. I wasn’t there, but I heard it was amazing and this year they’re doing it again. This time it’s on the Williamsburg waterfront, will be on August 8, 2008 (8/8/08) at 8:08 p.m., and will be 88 minutes long and it’s called–guess what–88BoaDrum.

Free Crystal Antlers
The latest blog-buzz band Crystal Antlers will be playing a free show at Other Music tonight at 8:30 p.m. for their first ever show in NYC. Then they will be at Mercury Lounge tomorrow (Tuesday) night with Chair Lift and Religious Knives. They will also be at the big Todd P show on July 12 at the Yard.
Their debut EP was released in June and got Best New Music rights on Pitchfork. No word on a full-length yet…. More »
The Breeders Add More NYC Shows
The legendary Breeders played Webster Hall last night to a sold out crowd. Too bad for me I wasn’t there but I am super-psyched to report that they apparently announced at the show last night that they will be playing a free show at Other Music on July 11 and will be joining Matt & Kim at a free McCarren Park Pool show on July 13. My Favorite CD Stores in NYC
The truth is, I don’t buy CDs all that often, but when I do I definitely have my favorite shops:
1. Academy Records at 12 W. 18th St. between 5th and 6th Ave.
Even though this store is small and their rock/pop selection even smaller (they specialize in jazz and classical), their prices are great for the actually good selection of used indie albums. El Guincho Playing Free Show Tonight, I’m From Barcelona Coming Soon
Recently named Best New Music by Pitchfork, El Guincho is in town from Barcelona and is playing a free show for Other Music at Union Pool in Brooklyn tonight. Apparently he rocked it at SXSW and at Mercury Lounge last night, so this seems like a good show to check out.
Incidentally, the very large band I’m From Barcelona, who are actually from Sweden, will be at Maxwell’s on April 25 and at a boomBOOM presents show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple… More »
Black Lips Played Bowery, Music Hall of Williamsburg
Atlanta’s Black Lips were in town to play a couple shows, including a free show at Other Music on Monday, along with the Bowery Ballroom later that night, and then they were at the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night, where I was in attendance.

Hot Chip After Party at Studio B
The official Hot Chip After Party, presented by Fixed, which follows their show at Highline Ballroom tomorrow night, will be at Studio B and will feature a live-set by the blog-popular band The Teenagers and a DJ set by Hot Chip. Virgin Megastore Leaving Union Square?
According to the New York Sun and Billboard, the Virgin Megastore in Union Square is being offered for availability in 2009 by real estate broker Winick Realty. The two-story, 58,000 sq. ft. space is being offered in total. It is unclear whether Virgin will move the store to another location or close it permanently. No word either on any changes with the Times Square location. First Tower Records, now Virgin? Let’s just hope that all the indepenents like Other Music… More »
