Ah, Sesame Street: Making television for toddlers palatable to adults since 1969. Not only did it revolutionize educational television, but perhaps even more impressively, it made sure that the parents, teachers, babysitters, and other adults watching the show with their favorite three-year-olds wouldn’t go crazy from its inanity. And what exactly is it about the show that makes it so amazing, however old or young you are? Its pop culture references. Little kids may not know who Isaiah Mustafa is, but their parents certainly do. Let’s take a look at some of Sesame Street’s best pop culture parodies, shall we? You just might learn something yourself!

1) Glee
This is one of the most recent parodies to have been tackled by the Street, and frankly, the only question I’m left with is why it took them this long to get to it. Between the Muppet Jane Lynch and the not-quite “Don’t Stop Believin’,” they’ve got it spot on.

Hmm. Now I have “Don’t Stop Believin’” stuck in my head. Too bad that song has been forever tarnished by the whole Michaele Salahi-Neal Schon debacle.

2) The Old Spice Guy
Grover is totally sexier than Isaiah Mustafa. And also he teaches kids about prepositions. ON MY NOSE.

3) Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark
It’s unlikely that a lot of kiddies paid too much attention to the drama surrounding Julie Taymor and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, but an awful lot of adults certainly were. Grover, by the way, is also sexier than Reeve Carney.

4) Mad Men
Talk about literal Mad Men. Also, apparently all it takes to turn Sad Don Draper into Happy Don Draper is a picture of a bear with honey. Who knew?

Video: This ‘Saved By The Bell’ Spoof Is Full Of Death And Murder

Ever wanted to see the cast of Saved By The Bell impaled by pointy objects? Today’s your lucky day, then, because actor/musician Miles Fisher has made a video that fulfills all your weirdest fantasies about Zach Morris and Kelly Kapowski. It’s supposed to be a viral promo for Final Destination 5, which, well, good luck with that, but I am choosing instead to take it as a literal skewering of the too-soon nineties nostalgia that’s currently invading our culture. I have had enough of that, thanks.

Populated by the cast of the aforementioned sequel-to-a-sequel, the video follows the Bayside crew as they fail to outwit various bloody fates. This theme echoes that of the last Miles Fisher video to go viral, which took The Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place” and placed it in an American Psycho context. (Dude looks a frightening amount like Christian Bale.) The song itself, a Fisher original called “New Romance,” is sort of repetitive and forgettable, but then again, so was much of Saved By The Bell. Maybe don’t quit acting and directing, Miles Fisher.

Video: ‘Born This Way’ in the Key of Magneto

Shortly after the release of X-Men: First Class, YouTube user TheWarpZone wrote an absolutely hilarious X-Men themed parody of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” He also issued a challenge: If the video of him just playing the song on an acoustic guitar in his room got enough views, he’d make a full video for the song. Lo and behold, he has apparently received sufficient viewing figures, because earlier in the week, this glorious piece of work emerged. I don’t know about you guys, but there’s something about a supremely awkward Magneto holding an electric guitar (did you notice that it floated up to him via his amazing magnetic powers?) and surrounded by dancing girls that really does it for me. There’s a lot of in-jokes for fans here, too; a variety of X-Men make appearances, and it’s kind of fun to play Spot-the-Mutant. I found Juggernaut, Gambit, Jubilee, Wolverine, Banshee, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Pyro, Professor X, Mystique, and Jean Grey; did you catch anyone I missed, readers?

What with all the parodies of Rebecca Black’s “Friday” out there, are you really surprised that there’s a Harry Potter one? I didn’t think so. YouTube user GinnyisaPrincess wrote and produced “Ravenclaws,” the best Harry Potter themed-”Friday” parody you’re likely to find. Bonus: Not only is she unaided by autotune, but more importantly, she can actually sing! Lyrical highlights include the bridge:

“Slytherins are evil;
Gryffindors are morons;
What the hell is a Hufflepuff?
The hell’s a Hufflepuff?
I hear they’re really good finders!”

And of course the chorus:

“Ravenclaws!
Ravenclaws!
We’re the smart kids, we’re Ravenclaws!
Everybody wishes they were in our house!”

The Ravenclaws may not do much partying on Friday, but they certainly do study a lot. Then again, that means that they’ll probably be able to Transfigure you into a frog well before you figure out how to counter it, so maybe they’re on the right track after all…

Lady Gaga Not Amused By Weird Al Yankovic’s ‘Born This Way’ Parody

Weird Al Yankovic is known for his pop culture parodies, and he’s done reworked versions of songs by everyone from Michael Jackson to Nirvana. However, one artist evidently doesn’t find Weird Al’s work to be funny – Lady Gaga. Weird Al announced via his YouTube channel that he wrote a version of Gaga’s song “Born This Way” called “Perform This Way,” and although he intended for the song to appear on his upcoming album it won’t be included. He’s not stating the exact reason why, but he has promised to update fans on the situation on his website soon. Our theory? Gaga put the kibosh on the song because the lyrics make fun of her. We thought she had a better sense of humor than that. Here’s the song:

Video Gallery: The Best of ‘The Room’ Parodies

Do you remember your first time? I know I do: it was during my second year of grad school at the beginning of a theatrical production and design class. We were all gathered around a large table in a conference room, preparing to discuss our hypothetical proposals for hypothetical productions of A Doll’s House and The Threepenny Opera. Then John opened up his laptop, booted up YouTube, and just said, “Guys. WATCH THIS.”

We watched.

We were dumbfounded.

IT WAS SO. BAD.

Thus it was that the seven of us found ourselves drawn into the cult craze that is Tommy Wiseau’s The Room. Maybe it’s the bad acting. Maybe it’s the laughable production values. Maybe it’s Wiseau’s remarkable accent. But whatever the cause, The Room has done nothing but build up even more steam as the years have gone on, forming an army of devoted followers who keep finding more and more creative ways to worship this terrible, terrible movie. So naturally, there are now boatloads of parodies, re-cuts, and homages that are, quite possibly, even more hilarious than the movie itself. Here are our favorites of the bunch:

1) The Room (In 60 Seconds)
“Oh hi, Mark!” “Oh, hey, Johnny.” “Hi Johnny…” “Hey! Peter!” “Oh hi, Lisa…” Egad! The Room is an entire feature-length film’s worth of people doing nothing but say “Oh hi!” to each other!

2) Star Wars/The Room Mash-Up
For this performance of Star Wars: A New Hope, the role of Darth Vader will be played by Tommy Wiseau. The sound editing is a little clumsy, but it’s worth watching solely for what happens at the 2 minute and 17 second mark. Also, R2-D2′s only line is “CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP!”

3) The Room – WITH PUPPIES!
The puppies are more convincing that the entire human cast.

’30 Rock’ Takes On ‘The Real Housewives’

The hit show 30 Rock is about the people who make a TV show, and there’s nothing they love more than loading up the show with references to other TV shows (MILF Island, anyone?). One of the storylines this season is about Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan)’s wife Angie (Sherri Shepherd) getting her own Real Housewives-esque reality show called Queen of Jordan. While my friend Andy Dehnart over at Reality Blurred doesn’t think Queen of Jordan hits the mark in its Real Housewives mockery, I think that’s because Queen of Jordan also borrows heavily from other reality shows. This is a show centered solely around Angie and her friends/employees instead of an ensemble show. Despite the table-flipping and other Housewives shoutouts, Angie’s show reminds me more of Kimora: My Life in the Fab Lane, Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, or any other show that’s centered around one person or family and their hangers-on. Anyway, you can check out the episode below and see if you agree.

The Best Rebecca Black Parody Videos and Fan Tweets

Rebecca Black. Oh lawd. We already know how bad this video is, and we feel bad for a teenage girl who is being ripped on. But let’s be honest – I know my days of the week and I especially know the days of the weekend. Who really cares about Monday-Thursday? This girl has got it right! We can’t hate on her! Oh…but there are more words to the song, and of course that video…Fun. Fun. Fun.

Of course for every 1,000 people who are laughing you have 1 fan, so there really is a Rebecca Black fan club on Twitter and they have tweeted out support and of course some pretty disturbing aspirations for the “singer.” Because I am open to Rebecca Black being a joke, I am kinda hoping her fan club may be fake…
