Why Was Paula Abdul Fired From The X Factor?

It’s a bloodbath at The X Factor! In addition to host Steve Jones and judge Nicole Scherzinger, today news got out that beloved good cop Paula Abdul has been given the axe as well. This leaves only LA Reid to fire. After that, if show creator/producer/bad cop Simon Cowell wants to fire anyone, he’ll have to fire himself.

Why did Paula get the boot? Many are saying it’s because her nicey-nice judging style didn’t mesh as well with The X Factor as it had with American Idol. “Because ‘X Factor’ requires judges to be mentors and to compete against each other, Paula couldn’t simply sit back and be the eternally understanding big sister,” writes David Hinckley of The New York Daily News. “She couldn’t just send all the contestants on their way by telling them never to give up their dream.”

There’s also the issue of ratings. While this past season of The X Factor did quite well, pulling in 12 to 13 million viewers per show, it fell short of the whopping 20 million viewers Simon’s old show, American Idol, pulled in.

To add insult to injury, TMZ reports that Paula got the news from lawyers connected with the show, not from Simon himself. He’s a busy guy, okay? I’m sure he’ll send her a fruit basket or something.

Ms. Abdul has yet to comment on her departure.

When you buy something from a charity auction, you usually assume that 100%, or at least a large portion, of the proceeds are going to charity. Stop doing this! According to Fox News, a handful of celebrities including Kim and Khloe Kardashian only donate a paltry 10%.

The vehicle for these donations is Ebay Giving Works, which lets people auction off items and donate up to 100% of the proceeds to a good cause. Although Kim, who is worth an estimated $35 million, promotes her page as “Charity eBay Auctions Supporting the Dream Foundation,” it might be more accurate to tag it “Charity eBay Auctions Supporting Kim Kardashian,” because that’s where the other 90% goes.

Items auctioned off are usually clothing and shoes, but Kim occasionally auctions off stupider things, like five minute audiences. For instance, before her birthday bash last year, she auctioned off a package for which “winner and guest will get to skip the line and be escorted in to the VIP room where they will get 5 minutes to wish Kim a happy birthday, take photos, and have up to 2 items signed.” (To be fair, she gave 25% to charity that time.)

Paula Abdul has also been fingered as a 10%-er. But in case you’re feeling sad now, you should know that lots more celebrities have done auctions where they give 100% of the proceeds away: Miley Cyrus, Sienna Miller, Steven Tyler, Barbara Streisand, and Charlie Sheen(!), to name a few.

If you’ve ever seen an episode of the extreme talent show The X-Factor, you’ve seen former Idol judge and friend of animated cats Paula Abdul have a near nervous break-down when deciding who to keep and who to cut. The sobs might have seemed a little over-dramatic, but now it looks like Paula’s choice between thumbs up or thumbs down might be a life or death decision.

Abdul and one of her co-judges Nicole Scherzinger are getting threatening messages after they decided to vote Drew Ryniewicz off the island (er, stage) this Thursday night. Some tweets and Facebook messages directed at the two woman after the decision have been less than complimentary including, “F**K you paula you dumb c**t you voted off the most talented person on your f**king show. i hope you die you DUMB B***H” as well as the concise, “@NicoleScherzy @paulaabdul go die.”

To be fair, while these comments aren’t friendly, they aren’t technically threatening. Commenter number one is only hoping for their untimely demise, while the tweeter seems to be offering them a suggestion. Still, it’s being said the nasty sentiments have shaken the judges, and hopefully in the future Drew fans will channel their rage into pro-Drew buttons and Facebook fan pages and leave Paula and Nicole alone.

Cheryl Cole Booted from ‘X Factor’ For Being Easier to Understand Than Paula Abdul

Although Cheryl Cole is arguably the biggest star in the UK, her attempt to cross over to America has not worked out. Though she was tapped to be one of the four judges on the US version of X Factor (which she was a judge on in England), TMZ announced today that Cole was let go and is being replaced with Nicole Scherzinger, aka the Pussycat Doll who can actually sing. The reason that Cheryl lost the gig? Reportedly, it was because her distinct “Geordie” accent was too hard to understand. (For an example of what a Geordie accent sounds like, check out this “Geordie Shore” video.) In a weird coincidence, Nicole won a season of Dancing with the Stars, and her pro partner was Derek Hough – Cheryl’s rumored boyfriend. Nicole was also supposed to be hosting the show alongside Steve Jones, so I don’t know if she’s going to be replaced or if they’ll just have Steve go it alone.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think Cheryl’s accent is that bad. You know who I do have trouble understanding, though? Paula Abdul, who will also be a judge on X Factor. She slurs and babbles so much that I occasionally think she might be speaking in tongues.

Cheryl Cole is possibly the biggest star in Britain right now, but she’s not very well known in the States. That should all change soon, though, as she’s heading to the US to be a judge on X Factor, the American edition of Simon Cowell‘s megahit talent show. So what do you need to know about Cheryl?

She got her start in a group called Girls Aloud.

Cheryl and four other women were selected via a reality show and chosen to be the members of a girl group. The group was a massive success and spawned multiple hit singles. Though each of the members has gone on to pursue other projects, they have not officially broken up.

Cole is her ex-husband’s last name.

Her birth name is Cheryl Tweedy. In 2005, she married footballer (aka “soccer player”) Ashley Cole, who plays for Chelsea. They divorced in 2010 after multiple tabloids reported that Ashley had been unfaithful. Cheryl is reportedly now dating Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Derek Hough, but neither of them have addressed the rumors publicly.

She is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

In the UK, people from Newcastle are known as “Geordies.” Geordies are believed to have the prettiest British accent. That said, there were many rumors that Cheryl’s distinctive accent would be hard for Americans to understand and that she had to take elocution lessons.

She has a good eye for talent.

Cheryl “won” X Factor twice. The show’s format is different from American Idol – there are four judges, each of whom mentors a group of contestants and choose who will go forward in the competition before the audience voting rounds begin. Cheryl’s mentees won the show twice – Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry.

She and her fellow X Factor judge Dannii Minogue reportedly hated each other.

As the two female judges on X Factor, Cheryl and Dannii were constantly compared to each other and the British tabloids reported that they fought off-camera. Does this bode badly for Cheryl’s reported future X Factor (US) co-judge Paula Abdul?
