Pitchfork: Sunday

Pitchfork: Sunday

Sorry for the lapse between days of my reviews (click here for Friday and here for Saturday) but I finally got around to writing up my review of Sunday, July 19 at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

We actually managed to get there on time, which was great because it was so empty! We could get places easily and get good spots at the stages. And, the sun even came out a little bit!

I started off my day with The… More »

Pitchfork: Saturday

Pitchfork: Saturday

To continue on my review of the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago last weekend (see first installment here), I will now give a review of Saturday. Of course, I did not see everything as that is impossible, but here’s what I did see:

Unfortunately, I got there pretty late and missed seeing Plants and Animals which was a bummer and The Antlers, who are awesome, but they play in NYC all the time and there next show is at Mercury Lounge… More »

Pitchfork: Friday Night

Pitchfork: Friday Night

I had the pleasure of going to Chicago last weekend for the Pitchfork Music Festival. Always a good time (this was my 4th year!), this year’s lineup was chock full of great and up and coming bands. For the first year I went to the show Friday night, which was deemed “Write the Night.” When you bought your tickets, you were able to vote on which songs you wanted the bands to play.

The night started at  5 p.m. with Tortoise…. More »

Pitchfork: Sunday, Part II

Pitchfork: Sunday, Part II

Finally, here is my last installment on the Pitchfork Festival. Although it got rather hot toward the late afternoon, the crowd was eager to see the last few bands, and the definitely did not disappoint.

M.Ward took a break from touring with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him to appear solo at the festival. Even though it was just him and his guitar, he still captivated the audience with his twangy rhythms, superb vocals, and beautiful lyrics. She & Him… More »

Pitchfork: Sunday, Part I

Pitchfork: Sunday, Part I

After getting some rest, the day finally started with some sun. Yeah!

The small stage was somehow already running behind, but that worked out well for me because this way I got to see Dirty Projectors and High Places, two more bands I had been meaning to check out for a while. Both are brooklyn bands that have gotten a lot of buzz, and I can now safely say that both deserve it. Dirty Projectors is totally not what I was… More »

Pitchfork: Saturday Part II

Pitchfork Tree Love

As the day wore on, the music only got better.

I had been meaning to check out the Ruby Suns for a while now and seeing them live was the way to go. Cheerful, bouncy tunes that could make anyone sway to the beat. Side note, the small stage this year was much improved, with more space and better sound. Still not perfect, but a definite improvement over the last few years. Memories of a horribly crowded and… More »

Pitchfork: Saturday, Part I

Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago, IL July 19-20, 2008

The rain finally stopped at around 2 p.m. and although the sun didn’t exactly come out, at least it was cool and dry. There was plenty of mud to go around though. Saturday at the Pitchfork Music Festival saw some excellent musicians ply their trade. It’s pretty much impossible to see everyone, but I think I did a pretty good job. Here’s who I saw:

Caribou, excellent as usual, started off my day… More »

Mission of Burma to Perform Classic Albums

Mission of Burma to Perform Classic Albums

Indie icons Mission of Burma will be performing two of their classic albums at the Bowery Ballroom in June. On June 14 they will play Signals, Calls, and Marches and on June 15 they will play Vs. MoB is amazing live; I saw them at Pitchfork Music Festival two years ago and even though I was seriously dehydrated and feeling very ill, they still managed to capture my attention. Incidentally, they will be at the Pitchfork Fest again this year,… More »

Siren Festival Same Weekend as Pitchfork Fest

Siren Festival Same Weekend as Pitchfork Fest

The almost definitely last-ever Siren Festival at Coney Island will be on July 19 this year. That’s the same weekend that Pitchfork has its festival in Chicago, and I must say I’ve always had an awesome time at Pitchfork, while Siren is often overcrowded and has horrible sound. Of course, it is free…and in New York…. More »
