It was taped shut with strong masking tape, making me wonder if there was a monster inside, or if the promised “McFlurry Mix” had grown sentient and was trying to claw its way out.

Unfortunately, there was no McFlurry mix, and since this McDonald’s product is literally “off the market,” (McD’s must have realized how important it was to keep their trade secrets) packets online were $99 each. Screw that! How hard could it be to make a McFlurry anyway, especially one designed specifically for kids. As it turns out, very hard.

People with so much disposable income and laziness that they would rather purchase a piece of fake grass for their dog to poop on indoors than actually take for a walk? The guy who desperately needs a bottled water maker in life, right now? The billionaire too busy to actually go to a shop and buy something nice, but has some downtime in business class?

But as ridiculous as the products are, the magazine still continues to exist, meaning that someone out there is buying this crap. And with the introduction of the $300 Firebolt Broom Replica from the Harry Potter collection that a friend found online today, we realized that the intended audience might be us.

Because for only $295 (plus tax), our very own “Finely detailed, hand-painted authentic prop replica, as featured in the Harry Potter film series” could be waiting for us when we land at home. Think of the jealous looks our friends would give us, as we proudly displayed our broom – the most expensive item in our home – on a pedestal that we’d also need to buy. “How did you get your hands on an actual magic broom from Harry Potter?” they’d ask, through gritted teeth. And we’d smile and shake our heads, knowing that the price was well worth it.

But in case brooms aren’t your thing, don’t worry, SkyMall has a lot more Harry Potter action for you. You can buy Dumbledore’s wand set for $145, or your very own TriWizard Cup for $125 (and that’s without having to play one game of Quidditch!).

The more you look at these items, the more sensible they seem as an investment. After all, if there is one thing SkyMall really does well, it’s convincing you at very high altitudes that you won’t regret spending $200 for a Dobby pewter paperweight once you descen from the clouds.

Every week, Gail K. skewers advertising aimed at women with her quick wit, acidic tongue, and love for butter-products. This week: 5 celebrity endorsements from celebs that should go back to working instead of shilling.

Justin Bieber Wants to Nail You
Now that I have your attention ladies, let me level with you. Bieber Fever? I get it, but I don’t like it. If it’s not legal for Gail to touch, then it’s no fun for Gail to even look. Now he’s expanding his media empire beyond CSI appearances by launching a line of …NAIL POLISH?

J-Face, it’s one thing pandering to unrealistic female fantasies for record sales, but to shill affirmation in a bottle in the name of all things Bieb? My God, Man-Boy, you are a whore for your audience! Putting your brand all over my fingers would suffice as a cougar tease, but you go and name the collection One Less Lonely Girl. You put one of your hits where it hurts me the most, JB, a dark, dark place. A dark place that wants to buy into colors like Prized Possession Purple or OMB! More like OMG (as in Oh My GAIL)! Do you want me to put this stuff on my nails or ingest it? That’s a surefire way to guarantee one less lonely girl in the world. Suicide.

To Every Tub, Turn Turn Turn

What the Just Jack is Karen Walker doing hawking fake butter? Well, for starters, being totally fabulous. I remember saying aloud to no one once that I couldn’t love Megan Mullally more. Whoops, I made me accountable to me for lying, because it was love all over again when I saw this commercial while on a Hulu binge. Sure, I picture my face on that body sashaying across the grocery store with a hunky clerk. I’ve been forced to live vicariously after being banned from Stop and Shop for dancing suggestively with raw burger meat through the aisles. Point is, Megan Mullally owns this I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter commercial so hard that I almost forget the days of Fabio’s broken English and oiled pectorals. Almost.

Megan Mullally: You get my “You GO GAIL” of the week.

Claire Danes for Latisse. Yes, Really.

Finally a commercial that answers the burning question: whatever happened to Angela Chase? Well, she lost the flannel, ditched Catalano, dropped 30 pounds, went blonde and systematically destroyed everything that made her a relatable fake real person. Now this creature goes by the name Claire Danes and doesn’t even have the eyelashes to show for it. Girls, I don’t mean to be cruel, we all have low points and should support our gal-pals when life takes a sharp turn off a cliff head-first into a ravine, hitting every jagged edge on the way down. My rock-bottom involved having my sweat pants surgically removed after they attached to a few modest bed sores and dried rivulets of Haagen Daaz that presumably dribbled from my mouth down to my legs. We’ve all been there. So before you say What The F is Claire Danes doing selling prescription eyelash enhancers, think about your bad year(s), and then have that third glass of Franzia cause Gailfriends, you’ve earned it!

And those products you know and love, from shampoo down to what flavor yogurt you prefer, are not always going to be available. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself enjoying and needing more and more products every day. Like my soap-free Aveeno face wash, Estee Lauder perfume and Burt’s Bees chapstick. And then there’s one thing I’ve haven’t gone a day without since high school: bronzer.

For the past few years, I’ve been obsessed with my Cargo bronzer, which a salesperson at Sephora turned me on to. It has just the right amount of shimmer and tint to make me look bronzed but not orange. But when I stopped in to a Sephora recently to restock my stash, I learned the line had been discontinued. “You can try searching online,” the less than helpful saleslady told me. “Most discontinued products end up there.”

If I had known my favorite bronzer was going the way of the Do-do bird I would have bought out the entire store months ago, Elaine Benes-style. But now it’s too late. I might be able to scrounge up a few more compacts of bronzer online but eventually it will be gone forever and I’ll have to find a new brand. I’m afraid its a routine I’ll have to go through a few more times, too.

So what do you do when one of your favorite products gets taken off the market? Seriously, I’m looking to you for advice. I’ve already started polling my friends for their bronzer recommendations, and I’m guessing I’ll have to try a few before finding a steady replacement. It’s a daunting task, but something I’ve resigned myself to. God forbid I go a day looking pale and sallow.

What are your techniques for finding new products to replace ones that leave the market? Do you have any good recommendations for a new bronzer?

Lindsay Lohan has put her business hat on to launch a new brand development firm called Stay Gold. Their first new product under development is a self-tanner expected to hit the markets in 2009.

Stay Gold LLC was developed by Lindsay Lohan, her manager Jenni Muro (who Lindsay also started a film company with 8 months ago, Crossheart Productions), Kristi Kaylor and Sarah Haynes Heath.

Lohan “has a huge amount of exposure [to] many brands and products,” said Kaylor, 36, a former TV producer who had launched an online teen network with Jennifer Aniston and ran Warnaco’s junior swim business. “She knows what is missing from the marketplace.”

The starlet, turned fashion and beauty entrepreneur, will also be developing out the “6126 by Lindsay Lohan” brand, which is currently just the leggings line. The leggings line sold out soon after it launched, but the company has plans to extend the line to have a lower-priced series of leggings to appeal to the mass market (instead of just high-end leggings). They are expected to make it to the shelves next spring.

They opted to create a new brand with 6126 products, rather that tagging Lindsay Lohan’s name onto various products, in order to help make the brand accepted on the retail floor.

Stay Gold is developing the new self-tanner for the 6126 brand. It will be an odor free product with all-natural ingredients. Lindsay is said to be working on the product, prompted by her own fair skin and desire to have a product that works well. You can expect to see the new self-tanner hit higher-end stores like Nordstrom and Sephora.

A new shipment of 6126 leggings is on its way to retailers such as Henri Bendel and Intermix in New York, Harvey Nichols in London, and Intuition, Madison and Lisa Kline in Los Angeles.
