Some people might have just laughed this off. After all, what’s the harm if this chick was just spying? And the fact that OKCupid hasn’t gotten around to deleting the account yet makes us think that no one is taking this profile-stealing thing seriously. They really should be: while we’re used to the idea of being hacked or conned due to our own digital negligence or naivete, the scary part of this story is that anyone could do this to you, no matter how well you password protect your profile. You don’t need to be a hacker or someone with a lot of time to download and then re-upload someone else’s picture and call it your own, and it takes less than a minute to do the same thing with text in a profile.

Oh, you’re not on a dating site, you say? That’s fine. Facebook then. In 2008, the Wall Street Journal had a story about profile plagiarizers, and while the results were not as devastating as say, losing all your money in some Internet scam, it still managed to really freak out the people who fell victim to it. Three years ago, according to this piece, 9 percent of people from dating sites admitted to stealing profile copy and/or pictures, while 15 percent suspected they had been plagiarized. The numbers could have only gone up since then, making this type of forgery the most common type of identity theft in the world.

American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, has been hacked! A staffer at TMZ.com, had been receiving emails from someone identifying themselves as Carrie through the mega star’s MySpace account.

The emails were said to contain invitations to listen to ringtones, lol. Also, the following message was sent out to fans from “Carrie”:

“Hey, this is Carrie Underwood. OK here’s the deal, I need EVERY SINGLE myspace friend to stop what he/she’s doing and GO HERE RIGHT NOW and put your cell # in. You’ll recieve every ringtone from every myspace artist (including MY favorites)… (sic).”

Carrie’s reps are aware of the situation and have changed the password.
